The Dent County Health Center will be holding an after school vaccination for those students who are still in need of vaccines for the current school year. The Health Center will be open until 6:00 today to accommodate those who need the vaccinations. No appointment is necessary. The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Jeff Pogue, candidate for the 143rd State Representative seat, came it to visit and get a better understanding of want the commissioners have to do in preparing budgets and dealing with unfounded mandates. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on the Dent County Roads 5450, 5460, 6400 and 6500; and that brush would be cut at Dent County Road 5150. He stated that tree limbs are bring trimmed on Dent County Roads 5610 and 6210 for the school busses on those routes. Purcell went to say that maintenance is still being done on the asphalt machine and on a brush cutter. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3330, 3333 and 4280; while materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 3170. Larson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6150. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District has $240,000 to provide in grants for waste reduction and recycling programs. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the last day to register to vote in the General Election would be October 10th. She also said that the courthouse would be closed on Monday, Labor Day. The board then put out for fuel bids before Jerry Craig from the Salem Area Community Betterment Association came in to discus the paving project at the Farmer’s Market and the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center. The commission had previously committed to provide an in-kind donation of $4,000 in rock and that commitment will be honored. The project will need two inches of inch-minus rock as the base for the two inches of asphalt to be laid. Craig said that bid announcements will be in the Salem News and the Rolla Daily News for the next three weeks starting this week for the asphalt work. They hope to have the project started in the next two months. At the last meeting, the commission signed a letter of support for the Central Ozark Private Industry Council, and signed the letter to set aside 15% of the National Forest money to the Title II fund. Sheriff Rick Stallings also indicated that he would purchase a 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500 4x4 with an extended cab through the state bid. The cost is $22,919 plus $1,256.68 for additional packages. He will seek local financing on a three-year plan. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
Missouri Grocers Association, or MGA, inducted Bob Hufford of Town & Country Grocers and Wayne Gott of Town & Country Supermarkets into the Missouri Grocers Association Hall of Fame during the President’s Gala and Award Ceremony Saturday at the Chateau on the Lake in Branson, Mo., during the MGA Annual Convention & Merchandising Show. The 12th Tiger Club’s Football Parade has been RESCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade and show their Tiger Pride and Spirit. Floats and vehicles should line up around 5:30 pm, between the City of Salem Administration Building and the East Salem Hill. The parade will take off around 6:00 pm and will arrive at the Salem High School Football Stadium before the beginning at the game. Abigail Ray gave up seven hits and two runs in a complete game effort to get the win, plus she had two hits to lead the St. James Tigers to an 8-2 victory over the Salem Tigers. Savannah Hanning had two hits for Salem as they fall for the second straight game. Salem had five errors in the first two innings that allowed St. James to score five times. Salem is now 5-2 on the year and will be in Ava today in SCA play.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host the St. James Tigers tonight to open up their season. JV will start things off at 5:30 with the varsity to follow.
The Salem Tigers Football game with Confluence Prep has been moved from 5:30 this Friday night to 5:30 this Thursday night due to the possibility of excessive rain Friday from Hurricane Isaac. The City of Salem’s Inaugural Fall Youth Flag Football Program is just around the corner. Final signups will be held at the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center this Thursday and Friday from 4:00 to 6:00. This league is for all boys and girls currently in the 4th through 6th grades. Matt Holliday went 2-for-4 and hit a go-ahead solo home run in the sixth inning, as the Cardinals downed the Pirates, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park. Skip Schumaker had two hits, drove in a run and scored another, while Kyle Lohse (14-2) picked up the win despite rain shortening his start to five innings. The right-hander gave up two runs on five hits and has won eight straight decisions. Jason Motte recorded a four-out save to close out the victory. The Cardinals and Pirates play again tonight at 5:30 on KSMO.
Daisuke Matsuzaka returned from the disabled list and picked up his first win of 2012 as the Boston Red Sox downed the Kansas City Royals, 5-1, in the finale of a four-game series. Alex Gordon hit safely twice and drove in the lone run for the Royals, who have dropped four of five overall. Luke Hochevar (7-12) went the distance in defeat. The Royals will start a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers tonight.
