The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5160, 5190, 5610, 5690, 6280 and 6283.  Purcell also said that a crew is still in the Bunker area on Dent County Road 5600, known as the Turtle Loop Road, cleaning up trees and debris from last weeks storm. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3220, 5240 and 6160. Larson also said grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 2340 and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3090 and 3010. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee Meeting on Wednesday where the main topic of discussion was hazardous material clean up training. Skiles also said that he would be meeting with Dent County Emergency Management Director Brad Nash for training on the new satellite phone that will be used by the county in emergency situations. John Rostran came by the meeting to thank Commissioner Larson for cleaning up the old fairgrounds, and Terry Wright came by also to see Commissioner Larson about a ditch on Dent County Road 4290. Larson said he would have District 2 crew member take a look at the ditch and see what needs to be done. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

The 12th Tiger Parade will be held tonight. Any business, organization, club or church is encouraged to participate. Lineup begins at 5:30 behind the Courthouse. The parade will begin at 6:00 and the parade route is from the courthouse on 4th Street, crossing McArthur, down 3rd Street and ending up at the Tiger Stadium.

An accident happened at 11:35 Wednesday morning in Texas County on Route VV about four miles southeast of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1993 Toyota Camry driven by 24-year old Honee Bailey of Licking was traveling westbound on Route VV. The Toyota ran off the right side of the roadway, Bailey overcorrected and the Toyota ran off the right side of the roadway again and overturned. Bailey suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Toyota Camry was totaled and removed from the scene by A1 Towing of Houston.

An accident was reported at 4:00 am Thursday morning in Phelps County on Route F about three miles east of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Dodge 2500 driven by 23-year old Travis Tune was traveling eastbound on Route F. The Dodge traveled off the right side of the roadway, began to slide, traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned down an embankment coming to rest in the creek, ejecting the driver. Tune suffered serious injuries and was flown by St. John’s Helicopter to St. John’s in Springfield. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The time of the accident is unknown. The Dodge was totaled and removed from the scene by C and C Towing.

The Salem Football Tigers open their regular season this evening at the Salem High School Football Field starting at 7:00 tonight. Their opponent tonight will be SCA foe Mountain Grove. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:30 with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt. You can also stream the game on www.ksmoradio.com.

The 12th Tiger 2009 shirts will be available before the game tonight from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, at a cost of $10 each for small through XL; and sizes 2XL to 4XL are $12 each.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers slipped to 1-2 on the year as the varsity lost to Bakersfield, 10-0; and the JV also fell as they dropped a 6-2 decision. The Lady Tigers will be at St. James Monday afternoon at 4:30.

Jeff Keppinger's two-out homer in the ninth inning gave Houston a 4-3 victory and the Astros avoided a three-game sweep by St. Louis at Busch Stadium. Chris Carpenter, settled down after a bumpy start to throw six innings of five- hit, two-run ball. Ryan Ludwick's two-run single in the sixth put the Cardinals in front while Matt Holliday homered in the loss. The Cardinals are still 17-6 in August. Kyle McClellan (4-3) allowed a game-tying RBI double to Erstad that scored Miguel Tejada, who reached on a two-out single in the eighth. The Cards will face the Washington Nationals this weekend and you can hear the game tonight joined in progress after Salem Football.

Kyle Davies pitched six solid innings, and the Kansas City Royals belted a season-high four home runs to record an 8-4 win over the Seattle Mariners in the first of four games at Safeco Field. Brayan Pena, Alberto Callaspo and David DeJesus each hit a two-run homer, and Yuniesky Betancourt had a solo shot for the Royals, who had lost six of their previous seven games. Davies (5-9) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five to record the victory. The two teams play again tonight.

Samkon Gado ran for a touchdown and caught a pass for another score, as St. Louis defeated Cincinnati, 24-21, in a preseason tilt at Paul Brown Stadium that was missing both teams' starting quarterbacks. Kyle Boller started under center for St. Louis and finished 14-of-20 for 96 yards. The Rams are 2-1 in the preseason.

Kansas City will play Saturday night against Seattle. The Chiefs are winless in the preseason.

Funeral services for Estalla Tucker of Bunker, age 91, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Hospital or the Ronald McDonald House.

Funeral services for Marian J. Szwiec of Salem, age 73, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full military honors. A Rosary service will be held this evening at 7:30. Memorials may be made to the local American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Bernice C. James of Vichy, age 78, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Visitation Catholic Church in Vienna. Visitation will be tonight at the James & Gahr Chapel in Rolla from 6:00 to 8:00 and will also be at the Visitation Catholic Church Saturday at 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Walker Cemetery in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Walker Cemetery or Vienna Knights of Columbus.

A Celebration of Life For James Lynn Stafford of Steelville, age 76, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Bass River Resort in Steelville. All arrangements are under the direction of Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Claud Theadore “Ted” Rider will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Salem American Legion Post #99.
