On Monday morning, the Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on a number of Dent County Roads including Dent County Roads 545, 546, 554, 604, 637, 641, 646, 657B and 659A. He said materials were still being added to Dent County Road 624 and a pipe was being installed on Dent County Road 410. Simpson said that the bush hog would be out cutting on Dent County Road 632 at the request of a bus driver. Commissioner J.J. Tune said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 216, 240A & B, 314, 315 and 612. He said that some patching of the chip and seal roads was being done in the Ray Oak Subdivision and some miscellaneous potholes will be filled. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles and Commissioner Simpson both indicated that they wanted to review the information and submit a comment letter on the Medley Hollow project that includes parts of Dent, Shannon and Reynolds counties that could have an economic impact. Comments on the project need to be in by this weekend. For more information about this project, contact Thomas Haines at the Salem Ranger District office at 729-6656. Commissioner Skiles also wanted to let the public know that the county has reserves on hand in case of emergencies and sited the cases of the recent flooding that left Laclede County with over five million dollars of damages to their roads. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she had the acceptance authorization from SDR for the rural addressing that needed to be signed, and she asked the commissioners to review the MOPERM quote for the automobiles to make sure that it was correct or if additions needed to be made. Mark Head of Fidelity Communications came in to let the commissioners know that Fidelity is in the process of getting local phone service ready for Salem and the parts of Dent County they currently serve with cable. He said he is currently working on the 9-1-1 interface with EMBARQ and once that is completed and tested, Fidelity will be able to provide their local and long distance phone services to their current service area. At the last meeting, Tom Stehn with MODOT came in to visit with the commission about road and bridge improvements. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

At the 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction held Saturday at the Commons, a number of awards were handed out to the participants and their animals. In lambs, the Overall Grand Champion as well as Champion on Foot lamb was shown by Madison Bowen and it sold for $346.50. The lamb shown by Taylor Wrightsman was the Reserve Overall Champion and also received the Reserve Champion Carcass award. It sold for $535.00. The Championship Carcass lamb was presented by Rusty Wells and it sold for $287, while the Average Daily Gain Champion lamb was shown by Jordan Kaden and it sold for $308. Jordan Kaden also won the Reserve Junior Showman Award. Sydni Kaden was the Junior Showman Champion and that lamb sold for $295.00. Jenna Cartwright was Senior Showman Champion and her lamb sold for $440.00. Kendra Quick received the Reserve Senior Showman Award and her lamb was sold for $500. The lamb that was named the Reserve Champion on Foot was shown by Landon McDonald and it sold for $472.50, and the Average Daily Gain Reserve Award went to the lamb owned by Tyler Wofford and it sold for $442.50. The unofficial average price for all 12 lambs was $415.15. In the hog sale, the Overall Grand Champion as well as the Reserve Champion on Foot hog was shown by Ben Adams and he sold it for $1,125.00. Drew Smith owned the Grand Champion on Foot hog and the Reserve Overall Champion hog and it sold for $894.00. The hog shown by Garrett Wilson captured the Average Daily Gain Award and was sold for $1,258.00, while the hog owned by Austin Wulff won the Champion Carcass Award and his hog sold for $956.00. Cody Wofford was named the Senior Showman Champion and his hog captured the Reserve Champion Carcass Award. It sold for $920.50. The Junior Showman Champion was Brady Hagler and his hog was bought for $822.50. The Average Daily Gain Reserve Champion hog was presented by Brady Adams and it sold for $975.00. Whitley Counts was named the Reserve Senior Showman and her hog sold for 794.85, while Olivia Elliot was named the Reserve Junior Showman and her hog sold for $750.00. The unofficial average price for hogs sold was $974.91. In the Steer auction, C.J. Fleetwood had the steer that was the Overall Grand Champion and Reserve Average Daily Gain Champion and it sold for $4,250. The steer awarded Champion on Foot was owned by Cameron Hance and he was named Reserve Senior Showman, and it sold for $3237.50. The Reserve Overall Champion as well as the Reserve Champion on Foot steer was presented by Sydni Kaden and that steer sold for $3,520. The Average Daily Gain Champion steer was owned by Eddie Fleetwood and that steer sold for $3,013. The steer shown by Dalton Smith won the Champion Carcass Award and was sold for $3,225.00. Zach Schafer’s steer won the Reserve Carcass Championship and it was sold for $3,747.75. Mackenzie Wulff won the Champion Junior Showman Award and her steer sold for $3,025, while Sierra Hagler won the Reserve Junior Showman Award. Her steer sold for $2,510. The unofficial average price for steers sold was $2,864.94. Also in Monday’s article that featured the multiple buyers of livestock at the auction, we inadvertently left off Salem Livestock as they purchased a hog and a steer for a total of $2,415.00. We apologize for the omission.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at home today as they face the Lady Bears of Ava. Game time at the Salem Freedom Activity Fields will be at 4:30.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will open their season tonight as they travel to St. James to face the Lady Tigers starting at 5:30.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off Monday and begin a three-game road trip in Houston tonight at 7:00.  They are two games behind Chicago in the National League Central Division and one game under .500. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals also had the day off and they will host the Detroit Tigers starting tonight at Kaufmann Stadium.

City of Salem Youth Soccer Program signups will be held this Thursday and Friday at the Salem Freedom Activity Center Lobby for boys and girls from age 4 to 12. The cost is $15.00 per child. For more information, call the Parks and Recreation Department at 729-6290.

Funeral services for Myrtle Land of Carson Springs, Kansas, formerly of Salem, age 95, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Cecil E. Riley of St. James, age 78, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Missouri Veteran's Home Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time at the chapel. Interment will be in the Missouri Veteran's Home Cemetery in St. James. Special Military Honors wil be held at the cemetery.

Funeral services for William Edward Bierbower of Salem, age 74, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church.
