The public tax rate hearing for the four Dent County funds was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Commissioner’s office. The assessed valuation for Dent County was down about $89,000 from last year which would mean less money would be generated from taxes from real estate and personal property. The board reviewed the general revenue fund and in 2009, the tax rate was 3.5 cents per $100 assessed valuation. The commissioners voted to leave the general revenue tax rate at 3.5 cents per $100 assessed value. The commissioners also agreed to leave the road and bridge tax rate of 25.50 cents per $100 assessed valuation the same for the 2010 year. The Senate Bill 40 Fund tax rate in 2009 was 15 cents per $100 assessed valuation and the SB40 Board recommended leaving the rate the same for 2010. The commissioners followed the recommendation of the board to leave the rate at 15 cents per $100 assessed valuation. Last year, the Senior Citizens Fund tax rate was 4.53 cents per $100 assessed valuation and they recommended raising the rate to 4.66 cents per $100 assessed valuation for 2010 and the commissioners approved that request. The public hearing was then adjourned.

An accident happened in Dent County on Route A about five miles west of Bunker at 1:15 Thursday afternoon that took the life of a Lesterville man. According to the highway patrol report, 56-year old Clarence Russell of Lesterville was driving a 2006 Honda VTX 1300R eastbound when the Honda drifted off the right side of the roadway. Russell was ejected and struck a rock bluff. Russell was pronounced dead at the scene by Dent County Coroner Gina White. His body was taken to the Wilson Mortuary in Salem by the coroner. Russell was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Honda was removed from the scene by Whitakers’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5520, 5525, 6040 and 6255. He said that materials would be added to Dent County Road 6420 and that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 6200, 6580 and 6590. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that crews be putting in a driveway pipe on Dent County Road 4380 and that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3330. He also said that workers were doing maintenance at the road and bridge shed in preparation for the construction work that is to be done there. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended a Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee meeting where they reviewed the hazmat plans and training needs. At the last meeting, the commissioners signed the amended tourism tax ordinance #5 and Todd Kinerk came in to apologize for the article in last Thursday’s Salem News where he incorrectly stated that the county commissioners were in support of the Biomass project. He said that he was going to send a letter to the editor correcting the mistake. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers dropped a 9-2 decision to Bakersfield Thursday afternoon to fall to 0-3 on the year. The Lady Tigers could only muster four hits. They will be Vienna this afternoon starting at 4:30.

The Salem Football Tigers open their regular season tonight at home against the Thayer Bobcats at 7:00. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at about 6:25 with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt and online at ksmoradio.com.

The City of Salem Park and Recreation Department will be holding soccer program signups in the front room of the Salem Freedom Activity Center from 4:00 to 6:00 tonight and Saturday morning from 9:00 to noon. Signups will also be held next Thursday and Friday.

Albert Pujols became the fastest player in number of seasons to hit 400 home runs, but Ian Desmond's single in the bottom of the 13th inning lifted Washington over St. Louis, 11-10, in the opener of a four-game set from Nationals Park. Randy Winn finished 4-for-6 with three RBI, Skip Schumaker also drove in three runs, while Pujols collected two hits and walked three times for the Cardinals, who have lost three in a row and fell four games behind idle Cincinnati in the AL Central. Blake Hawksworth (4-8) was charged with two hits and the winning run while recording just one out in the 13th.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will be back in action tonight as they travel to Cleveland to start a three-game series with the Indians.

Josh Brown's 37-yard field goal in the final seconds lifted St. Louis to a 36-35 win over New England in a preseason contest from Gillette Stadium. Sam Bradford was under center for the first half, going 15-of-22 for 189 yards and two touchdowns for the Rams, who improved to 2-1 in their exhibition slate. Michael Hoomanawanui posted four catches for 53 yards and two TDs, Brandon Gibson also added a touchdown reception and Keith Toston had 41 rushing yards and a score on 12 carries. Donnie Avery left following the first half with a right knee injury after two catches for 48 yards.

Funeral services for Theresa Medlock of Salem, age 53, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery.

Funeral services for Michelle Hill of Black, age 44, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Internment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund at the Sun Bank in Lesterville.

Memorial services for Robert F. Maledy of Salem, age 87, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visiting time will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors with bagpipes. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church.

Funeral services for Mildred E. Tennyson of Rolla, age 93, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Macedonia Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Macedonia Cemetery.

Memorial service for Eric D. Pickett of Salem, age 26, will be Tuesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 to 7:00. Internment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Glen “Sonny” Gillam of Sullivan, age 63, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:30 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville.
