An accident happened at 8:14 Monday night in Dent County on Highway 19 about four miles north of Salem that took the life of a Salem three-year old girl. According to the highway patrol report, a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird driven by 31-year old Susanne Medley of Salem was traveling southbound on Highway 19 when the Pontiac ran off the right side of the roadway. The Pontiac started skidding and Medley overcorrected, traveling back across the roadway before the car overturned in the roadway and came to rest off the left side, ejecting everyone inside the car. Medley suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. An infant son, Tristan Medley, suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to the Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Medley’s three-year old daughter, Libertee Medley, was airlifted by helicopter to St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis. Dr. Etzwiler at St. John’s Hospital in Creve Coeur pronounced Libertee dead at 10:23 Monday night. No one involved in the accident was wearing a seat restraint. The Pontiac sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem.

Here are the award winners from the Dent County 4-H and FFA Livestock auction held Saturday afternoon at The Commons. In the lamb sale, Sydni Kaden raised the overall Grand Champion Lamb that was also the Reserve Champion in the Live and Carcass shows and was the Average Daily Gain Champion. Jordan Kaden raised the lamb that received the Overall Reserve Champion award, was the Champion in the Carcass Show and tied for the Reserve Champion Average Daily Gain. Kayla Gott raised the Champion in the Live Show and tied for the Reserve Champion Average Daily Gain. Tyler Wofford was awarded the Jr. Showmanship Champion award while Jenna Cartwright was presented the Senior Showmanship Award. In the hog sale, Mackenzie Bowen raised the Overall Grand Champion Hog that was also the Champion in the Carcass show and the Reserve Champion in the Live Show. Bret Freeman raised the Overall Reserve Champion, while Brady Hagler was named the Jr. Showmanship Champion. Jacob Smith raised the hog that was named the Reserve Champion in the Carcass show. Cami Barnitz hog and Kenadee Barnitz hog tied for the Reserve Daily Average Gain. Connor Quick raised the hog that took Champion in the Live Show, Haylee Black raised the Average Daily Gain Champion hog and Cody Wofford was given the Sr. Showmanship Award in the hogs. In the steer sale, Cody Wofford raised the Overall Grand Champion and Champion steer in the Live Show. Blaine Fleetwood raised the Overall Reserve Champion steer and was the Champion in the Carcass show. Garrett Wilson raised the steer named as the Reserve Champion in the Live Show, and Sydni Kaden raised the Reserve Champion steer in Average Daily Gain. Tamara Lampkins raised the Reserve Champion in the Carcass show; Tyler Wofford raised the Champion steer for Average Daily Gain and was named the Jr. Showmanship Champion with his the steer.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. For the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5460, 5490 and 5500. Simpson said grading would also be done on Dent County Roads 6020, 6070, 6090, 6370 and 6430. The rest of the District 1 road crew would be patching chip and seal on various roads throughout the district.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2150, 2210, 5232 and 5300. Tune also said that a crew would be patching chip and seal on Dent County Road 3230.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to thank the Dent County Fair Board for all the hard work they put in during the Dent County Fall Festival. Skiles said they put in a lot of long hours with no pay to make the festival a success. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she had received two phone bids for the extermination of the Judicial Building Annex. The first bid was from Shipley Pest Control for $75.00 and the second bid was from Advanced Termite and Pest Control for $85.00; the Commission agreed to accept the bid from Shipley Pest Control. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Fall Youth Soccer Program will begin soon. The Salem Parks and Recreation Department will be holding signups for boys and girls ages 4 through 12 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM with final signups this Thursday and Friday, August 28th and 29th. The cost per child is $15.00. ALL signups will be held in the lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (the old Armory.) For more information about the soccer league signups, call the Salem Parks and Recreation Department at 729-6290.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers dropped a 13-2 decision to Waynesville Tuesday afternoon at Waynesville. Their record is 0-2 on the year. The Salem JV Team improved to 2-0 with a 16-1 win over Waynesville yesterday. The Lady Tigers will be home for the first time Thursday afternoon when they face Bakersfield at 4:30.

The Salem High School Lady Tigers Volleyball team will be having an Inter-Squad volleyball
scrimmage on Thursday, August 28th starting at 6:00 at the high school gym. Admission charge is a bottle of water or sports drink.

Ryan Braun and Bill Hall each clubbed two-run homers, and Ben Sheets tossed six solid innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers pounded the St. Louis Cardinals, 12-0, in the opener of a quick two-game set at Busch Stadium. Aaron Miles had two hits for the Cardinals, who have dropped a franchise-high seven straight to Milwaukee and find themselves 4 1/2 games behind the Brewers in the wild card. Todd Wellemeyer (11-5) gave up five runs on eight hits in six-plus innings to take the loss. He had been unbeaten in his last eight trips to the mound, posting a 4-0 record. The Cards and Brewers play tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

Yesterday, St. Louis placed outfielder Brian Barton on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique. The Cardinals recalled outfielder Nick Stavinoha from Memphis.

Kevin Millwood went the distance for the second straight time and Milton Bradley drove in a run to lead the Texas Rangers in a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals. KC starter Zack Greinke lasted six frames and gave up an unearned run on four hits while fanning five and walking just one. Ramon Ramirez (2-2) absorbed the loss as he was touched for another unearned run on three hits in two innings of work. Miguel Olivo went 3-for-4 and knocked in the lone run for the Royals, who have dropped two in a row and nine of their last 10. The two teams play again tonight.

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed wide receiver Kevin Robinson on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. They also released defensive tackle Maurice Murray, defensive end Jonal Saint-Dic and offensive tackle Ken Shackleford.

The St. Louis Rams have released running back Lavarus Giles, kicker Justin Medlock and wide receiver Shaine Smith. They also placed cornerback Justin King on the reserve/injured list.

Funeral services for Hazel Gruver of Steelville, age 88, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Barnicle Chapel Cemetery.

Funeral services for Leo A. Lorts of Rolla, age 92, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be at 11:00 until service time, with a Masonic Service at 12:30. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery.

A memorial service for Richard Alan Tiefenthaler of Salem, age 77, will be held Friday at 7:30 pm at Wilson Mortuary.  Visitation will also be Friday from 5:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Linn Cemetery in Wentzville, MO. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association /Kidney Foundation or Charity of Donors Choice.

A Memorial Service and Bar-B-Q for Alan Otto of Cherryville, formerly of St. Louis, age 50, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Steelville City Park. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
