An accident happened at 2:30 Sunday afternoon in Dent County in the Mark Twain National Forest about 11 miles southeast of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Polaris ATV driven eastbound by 40-year-old Dana Rickard of Salem and a 2006 Polaris ATV driven westbound by 40-year old Steven Short met on a corner and side swiped each other. Dana Rickard suffered serious injuries and was taken by Air Evac’d to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Both ATV’s sustained minor damage and were removed form the scene by the owners. Neither driver was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.
A total of 28 buyers purchased 62 animals at the Dent County Fall Festival Livestock Auction held Saturday afternoon at The Commons. The leading purchaser was the Bank of Salem as they purchased three lambs, three hogs and six steers for a total of $22,602.65. Canoak USA was second in the number of animals bought as they purchased five hogs and five steers for a total of $19,118.50. Other active buyers included Intercounty Electric as they bought a lamb, two hogs and two steers for a total of $8,211.60, Town and Country Bank who purchased a lamb, three hogs and a steer for $6,699.25, Interstate Regional Livestock who purchased a lamb, hog and a steer as well as two ribbons for $4,880.60, Progressive Ozark Bank who bought two steers for $5,152.50, Phil-Mart who bought a lamb and two hogs for $2,149.50, and Larson Collision Center who bought two hogs for $1,782.50. A total of $91,212.65 went to the FFA and 4-H youth who raised the animals. In resales, the Green Forest 4-H Club received $230, the Dent County Fair Board received $184 and the Crisis Center received $52.50. The Dent County 4-H members and the Salem FFA Chapter thank all those who were in attendance, all those who purchased animals and all their parents in making this year’s auction a tremendous success.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for August 13th through the 15th. On August 13th at 8:28 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a burglary. The report revealed that person(s) unknown entered the garage of a residence in the 100 block of South Carty and took a saw and weed eater valued at $300. On August 14th at 4:34 in the morning, an officer was sent to the Salem Villa Apartments parking lot in reference to prowlers around vehicles. Officers responded to the lot and apprehended two suspects who were going through vehicles. A 21-year old Salem male was arrested for receiving stolen property and tampering with a motor vehicle, and was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. A 15-year old Salem male juvenile was detained for stealing and tampering with a motor vehicle was then released to his parents and will be referred to the juvenile officer. On August 15th 5:13 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 600 block of North Henderson in reference to a disturbance. The report led to the arrest of a 20-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was incarcerated and issued a summons to appear in court. At 5:45 that evening, an officer was dispatched to the 100 block of North Washington in reference to a stolen bicycle. The report revealed that a person(s) unknown took a black 20” BMX style bicycle with black handlebars and aluminum pedals from the yard of a residence. The bike is valued at $100. On August 15th at 8:10 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 42-year old Salem female on a fugitive warrant from Cuba. She was able to post bond and was released with a court date. U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announces the schedule for her 2007 August Farm Tour that runs through the end of the month. The 26th Annual Emerson Farm Tour will be in our area today. The Tour will start at the St. James Winery in St. James from 10:00 to 11:00 am, then the Tour will move to the UMR Luncheon and Value Added Tour at the Havener Center in Rolla from 12:00 to 1:45 pm, and then end of the tour, Emerson will be at the Salem Forest Products Event here in Salem at the Ozark National and Cultural Resource Center from 3:00 to 4:30 pm.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will face at St. James starting at 4:30 this afternoon.
Adam Wainwright tossed seven solid innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Atlanta Braves, 4-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Wainwright (12-9) gave up just one run on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk for the Cardinals, who have won five of seven to pull one game below .500 (63-64) and two games behind the Cubs for the NL Central lead. Chicago lost in Arizona, 5-4, on Sunday. Ryan Franklin pitched a scoreless eighth and Jason Isringhausen set the side down in order in the ninth for his 27th save of the season and 200th with the Cardinals. Juan Encarnacion homered and Yadier Molina hit an RBI double in a three-run fifth inning for St. Louis. The Cards are off today before hitting the road to face Houston tomorrow night.
Grady Sizemore scored the tying run in the ninth to send the game to extra innings, then came home with an insurance run in the 11th to help the Cleveland Indians secure a 5-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the rubber match of a three-game weekend series. Joel Peralta (1-3) took the loss for Kansas City after allowing a leadoff baserunner and Blake's sac bunt in the 11th. Peralta had pitched a scoreless 10th, but was ultimately charged with an earned run in 1 1/3 innings. Joakim Soria was one out from a save for the Royals in the ninth before allowing an earned run on two hits. It was Soria's fourth blown save of the season. Gil Meche, in line for the win until the ninth, received a no-decision after going six innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking a pair. Shane Costa went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Emil Brown knocked in a pair for the Royals, who have dropped two straight and five of seven. The Royals will be off today and will start a series tomorrow with Detroit.
Kansas City head coach Herm Edwards tabbed veteran Damon Huard the Chiefs' starting quarterback for the 2007 season. Huard, who signed a three-year extension with Kansas City in February, won a tight pre-season battle with second-year quarterback Brodie Croyle. Huard played in 10 games (eight starts) for the Chiefs last season, completing 148 of 244 passes for 1,878 yards and 11 touchdowns with just one interception. Huard led the club to a 5-3 record in eight starts in place of injured quarterback Trent Green who has been traded to Miami.
Daunte Culpepper went 4-for-8 for 47 yards and a touchdown as the Oakland Raiders downed the St. Louis Rams, 20-10, in preseason action Friday night. Ronald Curry had three catches for 27 yards and a score while LaMont Jordan had 18 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown for the Raiders, who have won two of their three preseason games. Marc Bulger was just 8-for-21 with 109 yards while Gus Frerotte went 10-for-18 with a touchdown pass for the Rams, who have lost their last two preseason contests.

Funeral services for Myrtle Land of Carson Springs, Kansas, formerly of Salem, age 95, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Funeral services for Cecil E. Riley of St. James, age 78, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Missouri Veteran's Home Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time at the chapel. Interment will be in the Missouri Veteran's Home Cemetery in St. James. Special Military Honors wil be held at the cemetery.
