Two accidents occurred Wednesday afternoon within 30 minutes of each other in Dent and Phelps Counties on Highway 68 that eventually took the life of a Rolla man. According to the highway patrol report at about 4:15, a 2005 Ford Explorer driven by 48-year old William Geist of Rolla crossed the centerline and struck a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 22-year old Rebekah Gipson of Salem on Highway 68 about two miles north of Salem. Geist then fled the scene of the accident and wrecked again at about 4:45 on Highway 68 about 15 miles south of St. James. At the location, Geist lost control of the Ford Explorer and failed to negotiate a curve, went off the left side of the roadway, struck several trees, overturned, and the vehicle then caught fire. Phelps County Deputy Coroner Ralph Roark pronounced William Geist dead at 6:05 that evening after the vehicle fire was extinguished and his body was transported to the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Rebekah Gipson suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted by Air Evac to the St. Johns hospital in St. Louis. The Cavalier was totaled in the first accident and both vehicles were removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5410, 5420 and 6220; and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4210 and 6320. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4437 and 5340 while brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2200 and 6150. Larson said that workers from both District 1 and 2 would be helping pour a concrete pad at the Dent County Fire Protection District Fire House for the new back-up generator. This is in-kind work provided by the county for the project. Next Tuesday, eight workers from District 2 and three workers from District 1 will be attending a grader class in Osage Beach. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended a Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee meeting Wednesday, and they reviewed and approved a training needs survey that would be mailed out to the emergency responders in the area to complete and return. They also reviewed a Haz Mat response update and also heard from SEMA and the Department of Natural Resources. Skiles said that all three commissioners attended Jo An Emerson’s Ag tour Tuesday at the Lenox Farm in Lake Spring where the commission was updated on some possible dust and water regulations through the EPA, and they were updated on the issues with the National Park Service. The Commissioners then approved the purchase of a 1996 Ford F-250 pickup truck from Heavin Motors for $5,000 after reviewing all the bids. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley presented a memo from Prosecuting Attorney Sid Pearson about Dent County speed limits to the commissioners, and reminded the commission of the tax levy hearing Monday morning at 10:00 for general revenue, road and bridge, the Senior Citizens Service Fund and the Sheltered Workshop. Curley is also asking citizens to please call her office if they have moved within the last two years to a new address so that the voting records can be updated. A new voter card will be mailed out later this year with the latest address as required by state statute. She went on to say that she attended a clerk’s meeting in Howell County on electric management software which was presented on voting equipment. Curley said that she would like to see if there is grant money available to purchase two electronic poll books for the 2012 election. At the last meeting, Prosecuting Attorney Sid Pearson discussed the quit-claim deed for old railroad right-of-way property owned by Dent County that is located in Crawford County bisecting the property of Reverend James Fender. Pearson said that it is illegal for the county to own property in another county and recommended that the commission quit-claim the property to Reverend Fender. The commissioners voted unanimously to sign the Quit-Claim Deed on the property. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
