Tuesday night at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room about 65 concerned citizens attended a discussion on the future of electric generation with Joe Wilkinson from Associated Electric. Wilkinson said that 80% of our electric currently is being generated by coal which is the cheapest source, but said that recent legislation is changing the direction of electric generation from the current resources to renewable energy sources and control of carbon dioxide emissions. He discussed the advent of wind farms in northern Missouri as that is the only area that can sustain the farms with enough wind in this state, but winds are not always constant. He also discussed that Associated Electric is looking into bio-mass but does not have any one source dedicated to developing that possible electric source as they are trying wood, grasses and even after market products. He also reviewed clean coal technology, solar power, carbon dioxide displacement underground, nuclear power, natural gas and hydro-electric. Each of these sources have their benefits and detriments, and he said that it will probably be a myriad of sources that will be providing electric in the future using both renewable energy sources as well as the current energy resources.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education conducted their budget workshop Tuesday evening with a hand full of people in attendance. The budget workshop this month was on revenue. The district receives revenue money from local, county, state and federal sources. Local revenue money consists of several sources including money from taxes, Prop C, food services, activity funds and tuition, which accounts for 45% of the districts revenue. County revenue money consists of money collected from fines and forfeitures, state assessed utilities and forest, which accounts for 24% of the district revenue. State revenue consists of money collected from the basic formula used by the state, transportation, etc and ARRA, which makes up 36% of the revenue for the district. Federal revenue consists of money collected from the school lunch/breakfast program, Title accounts and for Special Education, which makes up 17% of the districts revenue. All together the four sources of revenue make up 100%. The current tax rate is $2.75 per $100 assessed valuation, although the state allows that amount to be as high as $3.43 per $100 assessed valuation. The assessed valuation for the Salem R-80 school district for 2010 is $63,818,946. Revenues that are received from either local or county sources, state or federal sources, is allocated to either Fund I, Fund II, Fund III, or Fund IV. The bottom line is no matter which source the money comes from, there is a certain fund or funds that the money can go into, and only certain things that the money can even be used for within each of those funds. After several questions from those in attendance, the budget workshop was adjourned.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a tax rate hearing and their regular monthly meeting at the district administrative offices boardroom tonight beginning at 6:00 pm. After the tax rate hearing, approval of the agenda for the regular meeting and communications, Superintendent Cindy Rumpf will updated the Board on the professional development days, the opening of school, the MSBA fall meeting and annual conference, and the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) annual yearly progress (AYP) report. In old business the Board will discuss surplus property. In new business, the Board will approve the 2009/2010 annual Secretary of the Board report (ASBR), the 2010 tax rate and the official 2010/2011 budget. The Board will then address the A+ partnership plan and resignations. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session to discuss personnel. The tax rate hearing and the regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host Bakersfield today at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Fields. Salem enters the game with an 0-2 record.
The Salem High School Lady Tiger Volleyball Team will have an Inter-Squad Scrimmage on tonight beginning at 6:30 pm at the Salem High School Gym. Admission to the scrimmage is a bottle of water or Gatorade.
The City of Salem Park and Recreation Department will be holding soccer program signups in the front room of the Salem Freedom Activity Center from 4:00 to 6:00 tonight and tomorrow, and Saturday morning from 9:00 to noon. Signups will also be held next Thursday and Friday.
The 12th Tiger Club is sponsoring a Football Parade to be held on Friday, August 27th. That will be the Salem Tigers first home football game against Thayer. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade. Floats should line up around 5:30 between the Dent County Courthouse and East Salem Hill. The parade will take off around 6:00 pm and will arrive at the Salem Tiger Football Stadium before kick off. For more information contact Stephanie Floyd at 247-1441.
Daniel McCutchen threw six strong innings and Neil Walker hit a three-run triple as the Pittsburgh Pirates took a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set from PNC Park. Felipe Lopez hit solo home run and Aaron Miles drove in the other for the Cardinals. Jake Westbrook (1-2) dropped his second straight start as he was touched for four runs on six hits over six innings of work. The loss dropped St. Louis to 3 1/2 games back of the Reds for first place in the NL Central. Also, St. Louis sits a game back of the Giants and Phillies for the NL Wild Card spot. The Cards will be in Washington tonight to face the Nationals starting at 5:45 on KSMO Radio.
Willie Bloomquist hit a solo homer off Alfredo Figaro in the top of the 12th inning, as the Kansas City Royals rallied past the Detroit Tigers, 4-3, to avoid a three-game sweep at Comerica Park. Kila Ka'aihue added a solo homer, drove in two runs, and scored twice for the Royals. Brayan Pena tied the game in the eighth with an RBI double. Sean O'Sullivan went seven innings in the start, allowing three runs on seven hits. Philip Humber (1-0) pitched three scoreless frames of relief to pick up his first win in the majors. The Royals have the day off today.
The St. Louis Rams announced on Wednesday that E. Stanley Kroenke has become the majority owner of the club. The decision was made via a vote by the rest of the league's owners at a meeting in Atlanta. Previously the minority owner of the Rams, Kroenke played a vital role in the effort to bring professional football back to the Gateway City in 1995. Kroenke purchased the remaining 60 percent of the franchise from the Rosenbloom family to gain full ownership. Kroenke owns the Denver Nuggets of the NBA and Colorado Avalanche of the NHL, but based on NFL rules forbidding cross- ownership of major sports teams, will now transfer ownership in those teams to his son, Josh Kroenke.
