The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, a burglary and tampering. On Wednesday, August 19
th at 8:15 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 700 block of North Hickory in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had broken a window from the rear of a residence. The window is valued at $50. On Thursday, August 20
th at 4:30 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East Fourth Street in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had broken a window from a 1987 Ford Van parked at the residence. On Friday, August 21
st at 6:00 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 1100 block of West Franklin in reference to a burglary. The report led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem man and a 28-year old Salem woman for burglary, property damage and stealing. Both were incarcerated pending the issuance of warrants. On Monday, August 24
th at 3:40 p.m. an officer was sent to the 800 block of East Rolla Road in reference to tampering with city utilities. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had tampered with the electric and water services between August 17
th and 24
th. The utilities had been turned on to a residence without proper authorization. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage or tampering reports is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
Area residents will have a free opportunity to learn about ways of documenting, conserving, and sharing the rich folk culture of the Missouri Ozarks during August & Sept. at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center in Salem. Workshops for people who are interested in becoming “community folklorists” will take place on Thursdays starting August 27th, then again on September 3rd and 10th, from 6:30 to approximately 8:30 in the north meeting room at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center. Matt Meacham, a folklorist with the West Plains Council on the Arts and part-time instructor at Missouri State University-West Plains, will lead the workshops. There will be no charge for admission. Participants in the workshops will learn about techniques involved in the documentation of folk culture, including interviewing, basic recording techniques, and basic photography. Each participant will undertake a brief field research project of his or her own, identifying a traditional artist, craftsperson, or expert on local cultural history and documenting his or her work or knowledge. Workshop participants will discuss their research with one another and consider ways in which their research potentially could lead to public presentations of various kinds, such as performances (of music, storytelling, etc.), craft demonstrations, exhibitions of visual and material arts, or question-and-answer or conversation sessions. They will also discuss possibilities for linking cultural conservation with economic development in our region. A Benefit fundraiser is going to be held Saturday at the Salem City Hall Auditorium from 1:00 to 7:00 to help raise money for eye surgery for Sister Sandra Smith. There will be gospel-bluegrass music, a number of auctions, Bar-B-Q with home made sides, funnel cakes and more. Your support is appreciated!

The Salem Lady Varsity Softball Tigers evened their record at 1-1 as they edges Waynesville Tuesday at the Salem City Park Field, 8-7. The JV suffered their first loss as they fell to the Lady Tigers of Waynesville, 7-4. The Lady Softball Tigers will be at Bakersfield Thursday afternoon at 4:30.
Adam Wainwright twirled eight dazzling shutout innings and earned his National League-leading 15th victory, as the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Houston Astros, 1-0, in a fabulous pitchers' duel at Busch Stadium. Wainwright (15-7) allowed three hits, struck out five batters and did not issue a walk for the Cardinals, who, with their win in the opener of this three-game series, have captured three straight and eight of their last 10 games overall. Albert Pujols' RBI double in the first inning was the only run of the game. The Cardinals are now 19 games over .500 and have a opened up nine game lead in the Central Division over the Chicago Cubs. The Cards and Astros will play tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.
Zack Greinke set a single-game franchise record for strikeouts with 15, allowing two runs in eight innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 6-2 win over the Cleveland Indians. Greinke (12-8) shattered his previous career-high in strikeouts, which was 11, and allowed just five hits and a walk in the superb outing. He topped Mark Gubicza's old mark of 14, set on August 27, 1988. Mitch Maier added two hits, including his first major league home run, for the Royals, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Miguel Olivo blasted a solo shot, and Mike Jacobs drove in two runs in the win. The two teams will play this afternoon.

Funeral services for Mabel Carmollete “Dollie” Dillon Kuncel of Salem, age 104, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Eastern Star or the Masonic Lodge 225 Widows and Orphans Fund.
Graveside services for Betty J. Fiebelman of Rolla, age 88, will be held today at 2:00 at the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the ALS Association: the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter at the Wake Forest ALS Clinic. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla.
Funeral services for Albert Charles King of Salem, age 67, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be private. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association.

Funeral services for Estalla Tucker of Bunker, age 91, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Thursday. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Hospital or the Ronald McDonald House.
Funeral services for Marian J. Szwiec of Salem, age 73, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday night. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full military honors. A Rosary service will be held Friday night at 7:30. Memorials may be made to the local American Cancer Society.
Funeral services for Bernice C. James of Vichy, age 78, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Visitation Catholic Church in Vienna. Visitation will be Friday night at the James & Gahr Chapel in Rolla from 6:00 to 8:00 and will also be at the Visitation Catholic Church Saturday at 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Walker Cemetery in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Walker Cemetery or Vienna Knights of Columbus.
A Celebration of Life For James Lynn Stafford of Steelville, age 76, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Bass River Resort in Steelville. All arrangements are under the direction of Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
