The Salem R-80 Board of Education held a tax rate hearing, budget hearing and then conducted their regular meeting Thursday night. Other than the board members, administrators and the media, there was no one from the public in attendance for the meetings. The board discussed property tax rates of $2.75 per $100 assessed evaluation for general funding, which is the minimum according to the state law whereby funding by the state is still provided; and $0.68 for the debt service fund although the state had approved $0.6807, bringing the total to $3.43. The assessed valuation for real estate for 2008 is $48,443,370, and the assessed rate for personal property for 2008 is $15,632,783 showing a total increase of $531,037 for 2008. In Old Business the board awarded the bid to Presto-X for pest control in the district. In New Business, the Board approved the tuition for 2008/2009 at $6,355.99 per student with half the high school students being from the rural schools. The board approved the Annual Secretary Board Report (ASBR) for July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. The board approved the tax rate of $3.43 total from the tax rate hearing held at the beginning of the meeting. The Board approved to accept the amended budget for 2008/2009, approved the Developmental Preschool Transportation Agreement with Durham School Services, and approved going through MSBA for Medicaid reimbursement from the Department of Social Services. The Board then approved the PILOT performance-based teacher evaluation plan. This is a tool, which will evaluate teachers throughout the year as well as at the end of the year. All the Administrators then reported on the opening day of school and their plans for keeping things running smoothly throughout the year. The Board had drawn-up a surplus property list a month of so back, and it was reported that $122 in bids on the items had been submitted from three bidders, which was approved by the Board. The Board then approved a resolution to prepay bonds using the $0.68 tax levy approved earlier by the Board to pay an additional $100,000 on the principal on the existing bonds. The Board then unanimously approved a resolution for a bond election for $9 million dollars to raise the debt service levy tax from $0.68 to $0.93 per $100 assessed evaluation, a difference of $0.25 to be put on the ballot in November. The bond is to be used for the purpose of acquiring, constructing, improving, furnishing and equipping school facilities, including the additions and renovations to the existing junior and senior high schools to reconfigure such facilities to create a middle school for grades 6 though 8, and high school for grades 9 through 12. The Board then appointed the Administrators at each level as the committee to waive a proof of residency, and Cindy Fry stopped by the meeting to ask to Board to approve the Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball Booster Club. They would be using the same bylaws as the Tiger Hoops and the Board approved. The Board then went into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. In closed session, the board discussed personnel and came out of closed session and accepted the resignation of Krystal LaRue as the assistant volleyball coach and then returned to closed session. Back in closed session, the board voted to employ Laura Gray as Assistant Varsity Volleyball Coach; Lori Barton as Assistant Varsity Girl’s Basketball Coach; and the high school cheerleading coach duties will be split between Becky Smith and Kendra Mobray. The meeting was then adjourned.
An accident happened at 1:40 Saturday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about eight miles east of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Honda Civic driven by 23-year old Richard Weeks of Houston was traveling westbound on Highway 32. The Honda traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned. Richard Weeks suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Texas County Memorial. The Honda was totaled and removed from the scene by A1 Towing of Houston. There are summons pending for DWI, careless and imprudent driving, no seatbelt and leaving the scene.

The City of Salem Fall Youth Soccer Program will begin soon. The Salem Parks and Recreation Department will be holding signups for boys and girls ages 4 through 12 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM with final signups this Thursday and Friday, August 28th and 29th. The cost per child is $15.00. ALL signups will be held in the lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (the old Armory.) The Salem Lady Softball Tigers dropped their first decision of the year to the Lady Wolves of Newburg by the score of 10-0 in five innings. The Lady JV Tigers did defeat Newburg by ten runs in their contest. The Lady Tigers will travel to Waynesville today to face the Lady Tigers this afternoon at 4:30.
The St. Louis Cardinals begin a two-game series with Milwaukee tonight starting at 6:55 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Milton Bradley went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Texas Rangers downed the Kansas City Royals, 9-4, in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. David DeJesus went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Gil Meche (10-10) was saddled with the loss as he gave up five runs on a career-high 14 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work for the Royals, who have lost eight of their last nine games. The two teams play again tonight.

Funeral services for Ida L. Otis of Springdale, Arkansas, formerly of Rolla, age 85, will be held today at 12:00 (noon), at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens in Rolla.
Funeral services for Hazel Gruver of Steelville, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Barnicle Chapel Cemetery.
Funeral services for Leo A. Lorts of Rolla, age 92, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be at 11:00 until service time, with a Masonic Service at 12:30. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery.
A Memorial Service and Bar-B-Q for Alan Otto of Cherryville, formerly of St. Louis, age 50, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Steelville City Park. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
A Private Memorial Service for Carolyn Joyce Yenzer of Rolla, age 69, will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Rolla Floriculture Club. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
