A Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman, called by Mayor Gary Brown, will be held today at the Administrative Offices located at 400 North Iron Street beginning at 8:00 a.m. The Board will be in closed session to discuss personnel. The board will then adjourn and go back into closed session at 6:15 p.m. to discuss personnel.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that the Patrol will be conducting a Community Alliance Program beginning Tuesday, September 13^th, and concluding October 11^th. The mission of the Community Alliance Program is to provide personal interaction between citizens and the Patrol. The program is designed for those possessing a strong interest in learning about the Patrol’s purpose and role within the law enforcement community.  The Highway Patrol is seeking 16 responsible citizens, community leaders, professionals, and business associates who are willing to commit to a program that provides a unique opportunity unlike any other program offered by the Patrol. Classes will meet on each of five consecutive Tuesday evenings, from 6:30 until 9:00 at Troop I Headquarters in Rolla. Successful completion of the program will require attendance at each Tuesday evening session. One absence will be allowed with prior approval from the program coordinator. The curriculum will familiarize participants with many Patrol policies and procedures utilizing techniques similar to those experienced by troopers attending the Missouri State Highway Patrol Academy in Jefferson City. Several evenings will include activities and role-playing exercises that provide participants practical experience. At the conclusion of the five-week program each member will receive a plaque acknowledging his or her successful completion. The Patrol is accepting applications for the Community Alliance Program through August 29, 2011. There is no cost to participate in the program. Selection of the 16 participants will be based upon the evaluation of an application form and a criminal record check. The North Wood R-IV Open House will be held at 5:30 PM TODAY and will begin in the gymnasium. A note that was sent home had the wrong date for the Open House and they apologize for the error.

As members of U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill’s staff travel throughout the state to talk with Missourians, representatives will be at Houston City Hall and Drury University in Texas County Friday to talk with local residents. McCaskill’s staff host “Kitchen Table Talks” statewide in order to reach out to constituents, address their questions and concerns, and provide Missourians with the resources necessary to receive assistance from a federal agency. Her staff reports all feedback they receive directly to McCaskill. The Kitchen Table Talks also serve, in part, to inform area residents of the services that are available to them when they contact one of her regional offices. McCaskill’s staff can assist constituents on a range of federal government issues. Her staff will be at the Houston City Hall from 10:30 until 11:30 in the morning. In the afternoon, her staff will be at Drury University in Cabool from 2:00 until 3:00.

Motorists who want to access eastbound Interstate 44 at mile marker 184 in Rolla will need to find alternate routes effective this past Monday. H.D. Quadri Contractors, contractor for the Missouri Department of Transportation, will close the eastbound on-ramp to I-44 as part of a project to construct roundabouts at the interchange. The ramp will be closed for approximately two weeks. Motorists can access eastbound I-44 by using the I-44 Business Loop (Kingshighway) to U.S. 63 north (Bishop Avenue) to the interchanges at mile markers 185 or 186. The contractor will have various types of traffic control in place to secure the safety of the motoring public as well as their employees. MoDOT encourages motorists to buckle up, slow down, follow work zone signing and drive safely through the area. Motorists should expect additional ramp closures at the 184-mile marker interchange as construction continues. Closures are scheduled every two weeks, and construction is staged so only one ramp will be closed at a time. Weather permitting, the on-ramp to westbound I-44 is scheduled to close on September 5^th. The off-ramp from westbound I-44 is scheduled to close on September 19^th, and the off-ramp from eastbound I-44 is scheduled to close October 3^rd. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers hit the road for the first time this year as they will venture to Bakersfield this afternoon for a contest starting at 4:30. Salem enters the game with 1-1 record having given up 15 runs in each of the first two games.

Juan Rivera hit a two-run homer and drove in two as the Los Angeles Dodgers took a 9-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals to sweep a three-game series. This was LA's first road three-game sweep of the Cardinals since August 20-22, 1993. Gerald Laird hit a two-run homer and Skip Schumaker went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals, who have lost five of their last six games. Jaime Garcia (10-7) dropped his third straight decision after allowing seven runs on nine hits over just five innings. The Cards will start a four game series with Pittsburgh tonight at 6:40 on KSMO.

Brett Lawrie cracked the eventual game-winning home run in the bottom of the seventh, sending the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the middle tilt of a three-game series at Rogers Centre. Louis Coleman (1-3) absorbed the loss after surrendering Lawrie's blast. Billy Butler had three hits and two RBI, while Alex Gordon cracked a solo homer and scored three times for the Royals. Starter Luke Hochevar gave up three runs on four hits over six innings. The Royals and Blue Jays play again tonight.

Funeral services for Clayton Stuart of Bunker, age 79, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home Bunker. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery near Bunker. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association

Funeral services for Bradley Anderson Payne of Steelville, age 93, will be held Friday afternoon at 5:30 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. A graveside service will be held Saturday at noon at the Kerns Chapel Cemetery in Springtown, Missouri. Visitation will be held Friday morning starting at 10:00 lasting through service time and afterwards until 9:00 PM.

Funeral services for Mary Alice Lay of Scottsville, Kentucky, age 71, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Reynolds-Corridon Cemetery in Reynolds County.
