The Salem Varsity Lady Softball Tigers dropped a 10-4 decision to Waynesville Tuesday to fall to 0-2 on the year. The JV played Waynesville to a 2-2 tie. The Lady Softball Tigers will be home to face Bakersfield Thursday afternoon starting at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Fields.
The Salem High School Lady Tiger Volleyball Team will have an Inter-Squad Scrimmage on Thursday, August 26th beginning at 6:30 pm at the Salem High School Gym. Admission is a bottle of water or Gatorade.
The City of Salem Park and Recreation Department will be holding soccer program signups in the front room of the Salem Freedom Activity Center from 4:00 to 6:00 this Thursday and Friday, and from Saturday morning from 9:00 to noon. Signups will also be held next Thursday and Friday.
The 12th Tiger Club is sponsoring a Football Parade to be held on Friday, August 27th. That will be the Salem Tigers first home football game against Thayer. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade. Floats should line up around 5:30 between the Dent County Courthouse and East Salem Hill. Evan Meek escaped a bases loaded jam to hold down Pittsburgh's 4-3 victory over St. Louis in the second game of a three-game test at PNC Park. Adam Wainwright (17-8) was hit with the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and four walks through seven frames. Albert Pujols finished 3-for-5 and Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. The Cards remain 2 ½ games behind Cincinnati in the National League Central Division. The Cards and Pirates play their series finale tonight at 5:45 on KSMO.
St. Louis placed southpaw relief pitcher Dennys Reyes on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow strain Tuesday. The move, retroactive to August 16, leaves a gap on the roster that will be filled by right-handed hurler Fernando Salas, who was called up from Triple-A Memphis.
Will Rhymes and Brennan Boesch each finished with two hits and a pair of runs batted in to back seven shutout innings by Rick Porcello, as the Detroit Tigers routed the Kansas City Royals, 9-1, in the second of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Kila Ka'aihue hit a two-out homer in the ninth inning for Kansas City, which has dropped two in a row after winning five of the previous seven games. Kyle Davies (6-8) was roughed up for 12 hits and seven runs over 4 2/3 innings. The veteran right-hander struck out five and walked three in falling to 2-7 in 10 lifetime starts against Detroit. The Royals and Tigers finish up their series this afternoon.
