The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2460, 4150, 5100, 5610 and 6050. He said that workers would be down on the Turtle loop pushing trees off the road that fell with the last storm, and removing the debris. He also said that a truck would be bringing back a load of oil from Springfield for the durapatcher so that repair work could be done on chip and seal roads the rest of the week. In District 2, Commissioner Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3080, 3090, 3100, 3110 and 4260. He said that a crossover pipe was going to be installed on Dent County Road 2150 and then rock would be added to the road. He said that maintenance was being done on truck 110, and that the transmission for truck 114 has been installed where it will be back in service. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles said that the three commissioners attended the dedication of the captured tank at the American Legion on Saturday. He said that he would be attending the MREPC meeting on Wednesday in St. James. Sandi Hogan, the secretary of the Developmental Disabilities Board, recommended to the commission the addition of Phillip Giacomelli to their board to fill an open position and the commissioners approved. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

At the Dent County Commissioners regular meeting held Monday morning, a tax rate hearing was held at 10:00. The county’s assessed valuation for 2009 is $149,825,606 which is down from the 2008 assessed valuation of $15,537,365. The commissioners agreed to leave the General Revenue Fund tax rate the same as 2008 at .0350 per $100 assessed valuation. They also agreed to leave the Road and Bride Fund tax rate the same as 2008 at .2550 per $100 assessed valuation. The commissioners then approved leaving the Senate Bill 40 Fund tax rate the same as 2008 at .1500 per $100 assessed valuation. All three of these funds will receive less tax monies due to the decrease in assessed value. The commissioners then approved an increase in the tax rate for the Senior Services Fund tax rate from the 2008 rate of .0453 per $100 assessed valuation to .0461 per $100 assessed valuation. The increase in the tax rate will only provide an additional $896 to the fund. The hearing was then adjourned.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, a disturbance and harassment. On Tuesday, August 18th at 11:32 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a black wallet containing $187.00 cash from a vehicle parked in the lot of the post office. That night at 10:08, an officer was detailed to the 5th Street Pub in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a purse and contents valued at $400.00 from a vehicle parked in front of the establishment. At 11:30 p.m. that same night, an officer was dispatched to the Grace Community Church parking lot in reference to a disturbance. The report revealed an 18-year old Salem male, broke a side glass out of a vehicle in an attempt to assault a 22-year old Salem male. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, August 19th at 11:00 in the morning, the City of Salem Electric Department contacted an officer in reference to the theft of an electric meter.  The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took an electric meter valued at $37.00 from a residence in the 700 block of East Rolla Road. At 1:00 that afternoon, an officer was contacted at station in reference to phone harassment. The report revealed a 23-year old Salem female was receiving vulgar messages and lewd pictures on her phone. On Thursday, August 20th at 8:43 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a lawnmower valued at $50.00 from the yard of a residence in the 700 block of East Fourth.  Anyone with any information regarding the thefts or harassment reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

Funeral services for Mabel Carmollete “Dollie” Dillon Kuncel of Salem, age 104, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00; with an Eastern Star service at 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Eastern Star or the Masonic Lodge 225 Widows and Orphans Fund.

Graveside services for Betty J. Fiebelman of Rolla, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Boss Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the ALS Association-the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter at the Wake Forest ALS Clinic.

Funeral services for Marian J. Szwiec of Salem, age 73, are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
