There will be a discussion of current and future generation of electricity tonight at 7:30 with Joe Wilkinson, the Director of Member Services and Corporate Communications of Associated Electric Cooperative of Springfield. Wilkinson will discuss hydro, wind, Bio-Mass, coal, natural gas and other methods of how electric is and will be generated. The meeting will be at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room on 4^th Street in downtown Salem and the public is invited to attend.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. Bernie English and Alderman Kenneth Nash were in attendance to ask the commission if the story in the Salem News written by Todd Kinerk was accurate in that the commission was in favor of Bio-Mass. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the commission has not made any decision to support or not support Bio-Mass. He said he contacted Kinerk who said that he had received that information second hand. Skiles said that the commissioners would have an interest in what direction the city will take in solving their electrical needs, but he says that ultimate decision is up to Mayor Brown and the Salem Board of Alderman after they weigh all the information. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading is going to be done on Dent County Roads 5610, 5620, 5700, 6633 and 6660. He reported that a culvert is going to be installed, ditch work will be done and materials will be added to Dent County Road 6420. Purcell added that brush is going to be cut on Dent County Road 6580. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading is going to be done on Dent County Roads 2515, 2533, 2580, 2610 and 5360. He said that work crews will be installing two driveway pipes and rock will be hauled to Dent County Road 3040. He also said that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 3330. Presiding Commissioner Skiles said that he would be attending an MREPC meeting Wednesday at the MRPC in St. James for an emergency plan update and review. The commissioners then opened up three bids for the Workman’s Compensation for the county and were going to review the bids before making a decision. The next meeting of the commissioners and the tax rate hearings for the four county funds will be held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and 10:00 respectively and both are open to the public.

Two local rural fire departments recently received grant funds from the National Park Service for much needed training and equipment for wild land fire suppression. The Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $19,651 to be used for the purchase of a slide-in pump unit, personal protective equipment, and firefighter training. The Jadwin Volunteer Fire Department received $10,000 that will be used to help replace an aging brush truck. The grant funds are a result of the Rural Fire Assistance (RFA) program, appropriated annually by Congress. The RFA program is intended to increase local firefighter safety and enhance the fire protection capabilities of rural fire departments by helping them meet accepted standards of wild land fire qualification, training, and performance for initial and extended attack at the local level. The RFA program supports the overall goals of the National Fire Plan by improving the capacity of local fire departments to protect their communities for the effects of wild land fire. Both Van Buren and Jadwin departments work cooperatively with the National Park Service to suppress wildfires in and adjacent to Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The Fire Management Office at Ozark National Scenic Riverways administered the RFA program for the National Park Service in Missouri.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a Budget Workshop at the district administrative offices boardroom on tonight beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the workshop will consist of budget information followed by a question and answer period of 6:45 to 7:00 pm The Budget Workshop of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at Waynesville today starting at 4:30.

The Salem High School Lady Tiger Volleyball Team will have an Inter-Squad Scrimmage on Thursday, August 26^th beginning at 6:30 pm. Admission is a bottle of water or Gatorade.

The 12^th Tiger Club is sponsoring a Football Parade to be held on Friday, August 27^th. That will be the Salem Tigers first home football game against Thayer. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade. Floats should line up around 5:30 between the Dent County Courthouse and East Salem Hill. The parade will take off around 6:00 pm and will arrive at the Salem Tiger Football Stadium before kick off. For more information contact Stephanie Floyd at 247-1441.

Albert Pujols' three-run home run in the first frame helped St. Louis rip Pittsburgh, 10-2, in the first of three games at PNC Park. Pujols had three hits and two runs scored, Matt Holliday had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored and Yadier Molina finished 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Kyle Lohse (2-5) pitched well into the sixth, giving up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 5 1/3 frames for the Cardinals, who have won three straight and currently sit one game behind Philadelphia in the National League wild-card race. They sit 2 1/2 games behind Cincinnati, which lost to San Francisco, for the top spot in the National League Central Division. The Cards and Pirates play again tonight at 5:45 on KSMO Radio.

Ryan Raburn went 3-for-4, knocked in three and scored twice, as the Detroit Tigers demolished the Kansas City Royals, 12-3, in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Gregor Blanco and Billy Butler each had two hits and an RBI for Kansas City, which had won five of seven entering the series opener. Bruce Chen (8-7), a winner of three of his last four starts coming in, lasted only 4 1/3 innings in this one. The journeyman righty yielded five runs on as many hits and walked five with a pair of strikeouts in taking the loss. The two teams play again tonight.

The St. Louis Rams signed free agent wide receiver Danario Alexander and released wide receiver Brooks Foster, the team announced Sunday. Alexander (6-5, 221) was an All-Big 12 performer at the University of Missouri last season after catching 113 passes for 1,781 yards and 14 touchdowns. He led all Football Bowl Subdivision players in receiving yards in 2009. In four seasons with the Tigers, Alexander posted 191 receptions for 2,778 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Funeral services for Mary Anna Dodson of St. James, age 70, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Flat Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Phelps Regional Hospice.

Funeral services for Lawrence V. Wallis of Jerseyville, IL, formerly of Godfrey, IL, age 73, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wallis Family.

Graveside services Junior Ray Turner of Salem, age 70, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wallace-Turner Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the family of Junior Turner. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Henry Dalton Myers of Salem, age 72, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the family of Henry Myers.
