At the Dent County Fall Festival Thursday night, Whitney Counts was crowned Miss Dent County with Katie Hunt named as the 1^st Runner-Up and Jessica Brand as the 2^nd Runner-Up. In other contests held at the main stage, Kim Marino was crowned Junior Miss while Ashley Plank was crowned Princess. The Dent County Baby Contest was won by Chandler James Brakefield, and the Little Miss and Mr. Dent County for 2007 is Kirsten Golden and Elijah Wethy. The Dent County Fair Board wants to thank all those who participated this year. Today will be the judging of al the livestock throughout the day with the Outlaw Junkies performing tonight at 7:00. Tomorrow will be Kids Day with Babaloo music and fun, Wrist Band Day from 1:00 to 5:00, the Livestock Auction at 2:00 that will be broadcast live on KSMO Radio, and the Demolition Derby at 7:00. Admission is $2.00 today for those ages 12 and over and it will also be Wrist Band Night where the kids can ride all the rides for $15.00 tonight. On Saturday, admission will be $6.00 after 2:00. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the Dent County Fall Festival at The Commons.

On Wednesday at the Fall Festival, Tracy Wood won the Best of Show in Pastry with her caramel filled brownies prior to the Pastry Auction.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the hospital library Thursday evening. Prior to the regular meeting, the board held a tax rate hearing for the 2007 year. Last year, the hospital had a tax levy of 22 cents per $100 assessed valuation. With the assessed value of $220,939, 511, the board approved a tax rate of 20 cents per $100 assessed valuation and none of the tax money will be used for the new Physicians Office Building 3. In the regular meeting, Debbie Hobson described the ambulance service and emergency preparedness with the board. Controller Stephanie Wofford then discussed the monthly operating statement for July that showed that the hospital had an excess of revenues over expenses of $21,263. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gave statistics for the month and there were 69 patients admitted into the hospital, 821 emergency room visits, 186 ambulance runs with 43 dry runs, 20 surgeries, 363 clinical visits, 208 home health visits, 7,471 lab tests, 20 nuclear med scans, 1,074 radiological procedures, 20 MRI scans, 338 CT Scans, 110 dialysis procedures visits and 289 rehabilitations. Joe Brand was then selected as the chairman of the Finance Committee and he will be assisted by Judy Thompson and Leon Kreisler. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor showed a new layout for the Physician’s Office Building 3 and it included 136 parking areas in the southeast corner of the hospital property. The board approved the sale of a Toshiba Analyzer 600 II to Diamond Diagnostics for $3,000. The board approved the budgeted purchase of two LCD Monitors for Information Systems for $395 from CDW and Network Security Software from Speartip for $19,135, approved the purchase of Pixis from Cardinal Health for $3,480 for the pharmacy, approved the purchase of an Ortho Glass Storage Cabinet from Northern Tool for the ER for $384, approved the purchase of a fax machine for acute care from Automated Business Systems for $599, approved two Berkline couches with recliners on each end from Schafers Furniture for $1,602, approved a Cardio Pulmonary recliner from Burrows Company for  $717, approved minor office renovations for Dennis Pryor and Karen Brown for $2,225, and the purchase of a conference table and six chairs, desks, file cabinets, stools and chairs all from Automated Business Systems for a total of  $11,942. In non-budgeted purchases, the board approved the purchase of a document scanner from ABS for 699, and MTS Centrifuge from Ortho Clinical for $3,500, a stool for the anesthesia department for $372, two printers from PC Connection for $411, a fax for Home Health for $110 from Quill and a washing machine from Bottorff Appliance Center for $329. The board then went into closed session.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning.  District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson was not in attendance.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that due to the recent rain most of the white rock roads in District 2 had been graded.  Tune also said that grading would be done in the Ray Oaks Subdivision, on Dent County Roads 238 and 318 and bush hogging would be done on Dent County Road 237.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Central Region Workforce Investment Board Meeting Wednesday in Columbia.  The board is set up to address workforce needs in 19 counties, including Dent County.  At the previous meeting the Commission approved the Fiscal Year 2008 Re-Monumentation Contract.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will face the Newburg Lady Wolves today at 4:30 in a make-up game from the rainout on Monday.

The Salem Football Tigers will in the annual Jamboree in St. Louis tonight.

Josh Willingham hit a grand slam and a two- run homer to give Marlins starter Rick VandenHurk all he needed on his way to an 11-3 victory over the Cardinals in the finale of a three-game series that snapped an eight-game Florida losing streak. Anthony Reyes (2-13) took the loss for the Redbirds. He allowed just three hits in his five innings of work, but of all four of his runs allowed, just one was earned. Jim Edmonds and David Eckstein had two hits each for the Cardinals, and Juan Encarnacion drove in a pair of runs with a ninth inning pinch-hit single. Despite the loss, St. Louis has won eight of 11 and remains just three games behind the Cubs in a tight National League Central race. The Cards face the Atlanta Braves tonight starting at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

The Kansas City Royals were off yesterday and will face Cleveland tonight.

Drew Brees torched the Chiefs, completing 17-of-19 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown, as the New Orleans Saints routed Kansas City, 30-7. The Chiefs offense, led by Brodie Croyle, had an awful night. Croyle completed only 5-of-17 passes for 45 yards and an interception for a Chiefs team that did not score until a garbage-time touchdown by Marcus O'Keith.

The St. Louis Rams will face the Oakland Raiders tonight on the west coast.

Funeral services for Daphene D. Sellers of Viburnum, age 85, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Memorial services for Bryce Hindes of Rolla, age 67, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Eagles Lodge 2015 in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Lucille Delene Patterson Thompson of Salem, age 91, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Dry Fork Church. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Funeral services for Vera Alice Giibbs of Salem, age 92, will be held Monday morning at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:30 until service time Monday morning. A Rebekka Lodge Service will be held at 10:30. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
