The regular meeting of the Dent County Commissioners was held Thursday morning in the Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams updated the Commissioners on CART receipts.  The year-to- date receipts are down by $1,943.83 resulting in a January through August total of $405,566.31. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that this was a decrease of about one-half of a percent from 2012.  In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 5170, 6083, 6245, and 6460, while brush was being cut on county roads 6510, 5080, and 5085. Purcell went on to say that patching of chip and seal would be done on Dent County Roads 4110, 6240, and 6380.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 3175, 4380, 4370, and 3020, while brush was being cut on county road 2050 and materials were being added to Dent County Road 3175. Larson went on to say that a pipe was being installed on Dent County road 3175 and that he had sent a man to county road 2300 to cut brush and clean up in preparation for the Fall Festival. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that on Tuesday he attended the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency Board Meeting in Winona. The Board is applying for a grant from the Missouri Housing Development Commission Trust Fund for homeless prevention, rehab and new construction of rental housing, rent assistance, etc. The Board is asking for letters of support and the Commissioners voted 3 – 0 to send the letter of support.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley had nothing to report. Dent County Tourism Committee member Beth Frizzell came by to submit Joe Devall, of the Silver Arrow Canoe Rental, as a new member of the Committee. The Commissioners approved the appointment 2 – 0, with Commissioner Purcell abstaining. John Clinton came by to ask Commissioner Purcell what he knew about the proposed Current River Trail in Shannon County.  Commissioner Skiles said he had spoken to Shannon County officials about the trail and supposedly it will only cross public property and possibly Pioneer Forest property. The Commissioners adjourned the meeting and along with other Dent County Office holders went to Rommel’s Lock and Alarm to look at security systems.  The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners is Monday morning at 9:00 at the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.The Salem Police Department released more of their reports. On Wednesday, August 7th at 11:26 in the morning, an officer was detailed to Classic Joy Ride on Craig Industrial Drive in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed a 66-year old Salem male took a blue 2000 BMW, valued at $7,400, for a test drive and failed to return it. The vehicle was reported as stolen and the investigation continues. On Friday, August 9th at 3:13 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the area of Macarthur and Third Streets in reference to a suspicious person. The investigation led to the arrest of a 51-year old Salem male for possession of marijuana. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 6:54 that evening, an officer was dispatched to Casey's General Store located on Highway 32 in reference to a theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that a male driving a blue Ford Ranger pumped $29 in fuel and left without paying. On Saturday, August 10th at 7:00 in the morning, an officer transported a 30-year old Ellington male from Wayne County to the Dent County Jail in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem.  He was incarcerated pending a court date. At 7:23 that same morning, an officer responded to the 700 block of Phillips in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that someone damaged a mailbox and post, valued at $50. Then at 12:54 that afternoon, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 500 block of South Carty in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took a tailgate, valued at $500, off of a green 1996 Ford that was parked in the area. On Sunday, August 11th at 5:00 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem female on an active arrest warrant from Dent County. She was released to the Dent County Sheriffs Office. And on Wednesday, August 14th at 3:11 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 400 block of East Rolla Road in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that a 36-year old male and a 55-year old male, both of Salem, entered a residence by force and took property valued at $1,500. They were arrested and the stolen property was recovered. Both suspects were released pending the application for warrants. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage or theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

City of Salem Youth Flag Football Program is coming up quickly. Sign-ups will be held on today from 4:00 to 6:00 and then again on Thursday, August 29th and Friday, August 30th from 4:00 to 6:00 and the Final sign-up will be held on Saturday, August 31st from 9:00 am until noon. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby at the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard Armory). This league is for all boys and girls that are currently in the 3rd to 6th grades. Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday stroked consecutive run-scoring doubles during the decisive fifth inning to help the St. Louis Cardinals down the Atlanta Braves, 6-2, Thursday in the opener of a four-game series at Busch Stadium. David Freese finished with two RBI, while the first three hitters in St. Louis' lineup: Carpenter, Beltran and Holliday combined for six hits and four runs scored for the Cardinals, who have won five of their last six games. The Cardinals remained in second place in the NL Central, a game behind the Pirates, who won in San Francisco Thursday night. St. Louis starter Joe Kelly (5-3) held the Braves to two runs on seven hits and two walks over six frames to notch his fifth victory in his last seven starts. He's unbeaten since a June 5th loss to Arizona. The Cardinals and Braves play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:40.

Conor Gillaspie golfed a solo home run off Luke Hochevar in the 12th inning to lift the Chicago White Sox over the Kansas City Royals, 4-3, to complete a three-game sweep at Kauffman Stadium. Royals’ relievers did not allow a hit in four innings of work before Gillaspie sent a Hochevar (3-2) curve ball just barely over the wall in right leading off the 12th. James Shields threw seven innings of three-run ball and wound up with a no-decision, scattering nine hits and fanning eight. The Royals have dropped three consecutive series after winning seven sets in a row out of the break. The Royals start a three-game series with the Washington Nationals at Kauffman Stadium tonight.

Memorial services for Robert Knueven of Salem, age 78, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery.

Funeral services for Delphia Schafer of Salem, age 93, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday night. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
