The Sesquicentennial Civil War Ceremony for the Skirmish at Ashley is set for this Saturday, August 25, 2012, at 10 a.m., at the Mount Olive Baptist Church and grounds on Highway VV near the Texas County line, about four miles west of Montauk at what was then called Stephenson Mill. Nathanial Stephenson’s Mill is referenced in official Civil War records, histories and newspapers. At Stephenson Mill a Fort was built about 1863 where Union Soldiers were stationed. The Fort was burned in 1865 on the Current River at what is now Montauk State Park. Stephenson Mill was located about half way between the Skirmish of Inman Hollow and the Skirmish at Ashley. The present day Montauk Mill replaced the Stephenson Mill in 1895. The actual Skirmish at Ashley took place August 28, 1862, 150 years ago. The event is free and is open to the public, and is sponsored by the Missouri Folk Arts Program and the Dent County Historical Society. Mount Olive Baptist Church is hosting the event. Colonel Michael Roderman, Commanding Officer of the Missouri 2nd Artillery Confederate States, a three-term president of the Missouri Civil War Re-enactors’ Association, will display a 2,300-pount cannon that can fire a 10-pound shot. Bring your lawn chairs if the Dent County Burn Ban has been lifted to watch a small Civil War Skirmish Reenactment lead by Col. Michael Roderman and Officer Garrett Gable of the Missouri 2nd Artillery Confederate States who will do live weaponry demonstrations. An encampment is also planned the night before the ceremony if the reenactment can be held. The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, property damage, an active City of Salem warrant, and an accident. On Monday, August 6th at 1:27 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of West Rolla Road in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a riding mower valued at $150 from the yard of a residence. On Tuesday, August 7th at 3:50 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1900 block of Lough Lane in reference to property damage. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown attempted to gain entry into a storeroom on a carport by prying on the doorknob, causing approximately $15 in damage. Later that night at 9:10, an officer traveled to Texas County to pick up a 33-year old female who had an active City of Salem warrant. She was transported to the Dent County Jail, where she was incarcerated. That night at 10:45 a vehicle was stopped for multiple traffic violations and being involved in an accident. The investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year old Rolla male for driving while intoxicated. He was transported to the hospital in lieu of injuries sustained in the accident. He was released pending the application for warrants. An accident occurred at 2:20 Wednesday afternoon in Dent County on Route H about five miles east of Edgar Springs. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Suzuki Katana Motorcycle driven by 22 year-old Kodi Humphrey of Springfield struck an armadillo. Humphrey suffered moderate injuries and was flown by lifeline to the Mercy Medical Hospital in Springfield. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Suzuki was totaled and removed by a private party.
The 12th Tiger Club’s Football Parade has been RESCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade and show their Tiger Pride and Spirit. Floats and vehicles should line up around 5:30 pm, between the City of Salem Administration Building and the East Salem Hill. The parade will take off around 6:00 pm and will arrive at the Salem High School Football Stadium before the beginning at the game. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball team will host Bakersfield today at 4:30 in their home opener at the Salem City Park.
The Salem Football Game scheduled for Friday night has been postponed and moved to Saturday night at 7:00. That game can be heard on KSMO Radio, online at ksmoradio.com and seen on fidelitylocal6.com.
The City of Salem’s Inaugural Fall Youth Flag Football Program is just around the corner. Signups will be held at the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center today and Friday, 24th, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and on Saturday, August 25th from 9:00 am to noon. Final signups will be Thursday, August 30th and Friday, August 31st from 4:00 to 6:00. This league is for all boys and girls currently in the 4th through 6th grades. Kyle Lohse pitched seven strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals took a 4-2 win in the second of three games from Busch Stadium. Lohse (13-2) gave up just two runs on three hits with three strikeouts to run his winning streak to seven games. Jon Jay went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Yadier Molina and Daniel Descalso each drove in a run for the Cardinals, who have won three of four. The Cardinals and Astros will play again this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO at 12:10.
James Shields won his fourth straight decision as the Tampa Bay Rays downed the Kansas City Royals, 5-3, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Luis Mendoza (7-9) allowed two runs on five hits and four walks over 4 1/3 frames for Kansas City, which had won 14 of its last 21 games coming in. Alcides Escobar finished 2-for-4 with an RBI triple. The Kansas City Royals have the day off today.
