The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a stolen vehicle, theft, and property damage. On Thursday, August 12
th at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Burger King in reference to a stolen vehicle. The investigation of the theft revealed that the victim parked a 1999 Ford Escort in the parking lot of Burger King, and between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. a person or persons unknown took the vehicle without permission. On Friday, August 13
th at 11:00 a.m. an officer was dispatched to Odom Drive in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that checks were stolen from a residence that eventually led to the arrest of a 30-year old Salem man for forgery of the stolen checks. He was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. On Sunday evening, August 15
th at 7:00, an officer responded to Magnolia Drive in reference to a report of property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke a set of electric landscaping lights valued at $75.00. On Monday, August 16
th at 1:00 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 100 block of North Pershing in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown had scratched the paint on a 1993 Chevy Camaro with a sharp object. Later that afternoon at 3:00, an officer was dispatched to the 900 block of East Fourth Street in reference to property damage. The investigation of that report revealed that a person or persons unknown had broken a yard ornament display valued at $40.00. Anyone with information on the vehicle theft or property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington tonight beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the board will discuss bids. The city had requested bids for a 2010 4X4 Ford Explorer and a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria, and the six bids received will be addressed. The city had also previously requested bids for a John Deere 313 Skid-Steer Loader or approved equal machinery, and those four bids will be discussed. During the hearing of persons, Mayor Gary Brown will call for a public hearing in order to open discussion on the setting of the property tax rate for 2010. The assessed valuation for real estate for 2009 was $35,674,714 and the assessed valuation for personal property was $10,110,520 for a total of $45,794,234. The assessed valuation for real estate for 2010 was $35,724,760 and the assessed valuation for personal property was $9,733,076 for a total of $45,457,836 for the year. The proposed tax rate for 2010 is $0.6322. This is strictly for discussion and comments by the public are welcome. No votes can be taken during this time. In unfinished business, the Board of Alderman will discuss and then set the property tax rate for 2010 by a roll call vote. Mayor Brown will give his report on projects and work being done around town. Alderman Kenneth Nash wishes to discuss with the Board the re-establishment of the individual Alderman reports. The Board will introduce and read two bills. The first, Bill #3206 is an ordinance authorizing the mayor to execute an agreement for the lease/purchase of a 2007 International 4300 cab and chasis, will be presented and is required to complete the lease/purchase of the new bucket truck that was approved already by the Board. The second, Bill #3207 is an ordinance that is required to set the personal property and real estate tax rates for 2010 will also be presented. After approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board may then vote to go into closed session.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a Budget Workshop at the district administrative offices boardroom on Tuesday, August 24
th beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the workshop will consist of budget information followed by a question and answer period of 6:45 to 7:00 pm The Budget Workshop of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers start their season today as they will be at Newburg to face the Lady Wolves starting at 4:30.
St. Louis' Jaime Garcia had the best game of his already impressive rookie campaign, tossing a three-hit shutout of the Giants en route to a 9-0 victory. Garcia (11-6) needed just 89 pitches to go the distance and faced one over the minimum 27 hitters. The 24-year-old lefty finished with six strikeouts and no walks. Allen Craig homered and drove in three runs to highlight an offense that recorded 15 hits. Jon Jay went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the Cardinals. The Cards travel to Pittsburgh to start a three game series against the Pirates tonight at 5:45 on KSMO.
Jason Kendall singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, and Kansas City beat the Chicago White Sox, 3-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Kendall added an RBI double for Kansas City. Royals starting pitcher Zack Greinke gave up two runs on nine hits and struck out nine over eight innings. Sean O'Sullivan (2-4) worked a scoreless 10th to pick up his first win as a Royal. The Royals will be at Detroit tonight.
Josh Brown kicked four field goals, including the game-winning 28-yard boot late in the fourth quarter, as St. Louis grabbed a 19-17 preseason win over Cleveland. A.J. Feeley led the Rams on a 65-yard touchdown drive on St. Louis' opening possession of the night. He finished the game 5-of-6 for 45 yards. Sam Bradford, this year's No. 1 overall draft pick, connected on 6-of-14 passes for just 24 yards for the Rams.
Rudy Carpenter completed 8-of-11 passes for 79 yards and the game-winning touchdown to lead Tampa Bay to a 20-15 come-from- behind win over Kansas City at Raymond James Stadium. Matt Cassel went 14-of-19 for 125 yards and a touchdown and Jackie Battle toted 11 times for 59 yards for the Chiefs, who fell to 0-2 in preseason play.
The 12th Tiger Club is sponsoring a Football Parade to be held on Friday, August 27th. That will be the Salem Tigers first home football game against Thayer. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade. Floats should line up around 5:30 between the Dent County Courthouse and East Salem Hill. Funeral services for Mary Anna Dodson of St. James, age 70, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 today. Interment will be in the Flat Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Phelps Regional Hospice.
Funeral services for Lawrence V. Wallis of Jerseyville, IL, formerly of Godfrey, IL, age 73, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wallis Family.
Graveside services Junior Ray Turner of Salem, age 70, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wallace-Turner Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the family of Junior Turner. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Theresa Medlock of Salem, age 53, are incomplete but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
