The Dent County Fire Protection District held their tax rate hearing on Tuesday evening. Last year the tax rate was $0.2253 per $100 assessed evaluation. The Board voted to reduce the tax rate for this year to $0.2210 per $100 assessed evaluation. With no further business, the meeting was then adjourned.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their regular meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00 PM. A tax rate hearing will be held prior to the meeting at 5:45. In the regular meeting, Administrator Dennis Pryor will give a department review along with the summary of operations and statistics report for the month of July, as well as the hospital activity calendar and legislative updates. The nursing services, ancillary services and auxiliary reports will be addressed during the Director of Nursing report. Old business will include a report on the physician office building, an information technology update and a strategic planning update. New business to be addressed will be the Missouri State Association of Health Occupations Educators Award, the annual bylaw review and the Finance Committee appointment. The board will also set the Joint Board of Directors and Medical Staff meeting to be held on Monday, December 10th at the Holiday Inn Express, the employee Christmas Dinner to be held on Monday, December 3rd at the City Hall, and then go over needed purchases. Following the regular meeting, there will an Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel, contracts and pending litigation. The regular meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.
Taking place during the opening of the 79th Annual Dent County Fall Festival was the judging of exhibits in the youth building at the Commons. The 1st place winner of the commercial booth went to Town & Country Back and 2nd place went to Inter-County Electric. The 1st place winner of the non-commercial booth went to the Girls Scouts and 2nd place went to the Victor Baptist Church. Placing in the Best Show competition was Joan Pyles for a pieced hand quilt, Aleksaner Kunkel for a watermelon called moon and stars, Mable Hendrick for a house plant, Susan Reisener for dill spears and Leroy Kunkel for a hand-crafted high chair. Then last night, a total of $1,327.50 was raised at the bakery and pastry auction. Today, the livestock will be arriving at the festival and needs to be in place by noon, and the Youth Building will open at 1:00. Tonight at 6:00 on the main stage, the Dent County Baby Contest will be held followed by the Dent County Princess, Junior Miss and Queen Contest at 7:00. Admission is $2.00 for those ages 12 and over and it will also be Wrist Band Night where the kids can ride all the rides for $15.00. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the Dent County Fall Festival at The Commons!
A workshop titled “Leadership & Management; Separating the Two” will be held at the Salem TCRC beginning Monday, August 27th and running through Monday, October 1st, from 8:00 to 9:00 AM. This program is designed to understand the differences between leadership and management. The program provides participants with the practical skills needed to grow as leaders. The introduction will focus on the many definitions of leadership and management and some common misconceptions. It will also address leader and manager traits, expectations and steps for ongoing growth. Ken Parrett, President/CEO of the Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce, will conduct the workshop training. These workshop sessions will be held at the Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road. The cost for these sessions is $15 per hour or $75 for the entire series. The Troop I Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, in conjunction with Springfield Brake Company, will conduct a “Brake Safety” meeting at 7:00 p.m., August 28, at Troop I Headquarters in Rolla. The program is designed to help educate trucking companies, drivers, and mechanics on how to make proper brake adjustments. A representative from Springfield Brake Company will also give a presentation on the proper adjustment of air brakes. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will travel to Bakersfield today for action starting at 4:30. Salem is 0-1 on the year.
Albert Pujols homered for the fifth straight game, and Jim Edmonds' two-run homer in the seventh broke a tie game as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Florida Marlins, 6-4, in the second of a three-game set. Braden Looper scattered four hits and two runs over six-plus innings for the streaking Cardinals, who have won three straight, eight of 10, and 10 of 13 to pull within one game of .500, at 61-62. Russ Springer (6-1) tossed a scoreless inning of relief, and Jason Isringhausen picked up his 25th save. Yadier Molina also homered for the Cardinals. The Cardinals will go for the sweep tonight against the Marlins starting at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Billy Butler homered and knocked in three runs and Brian Bannister pitched into the seventh inning as the Kansas City Royals withstood a ninth-inning Chicago rally to beat the White Sox, 7-6, in the finale of a three-game set. Paul Konerko took Jimmy Gobble deep in the eighth inning to bring Chicago within 7-3 and Josh Fields connected on a three-run shot off Joakim Soria with two outs in the ninth to make it a one-run game, but Soria struck out Konerko to seal the win. David DeJesus went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Royals, who ended a three-game skid. Bannister (10-7) gave up just two runs on five hits through 6 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking two. Before the game, Kansas City placed starting pitcher Odalis Perez on the 15- day disabled list and recalled outfielder Shane Costa from Triple-A Omaha. The Royals are off today.

Funeral services for Dennis J. Willis of St. James, age 50, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Corinth Cemetery in Salem. Memorials are suggested to donor’s choice.
Funeral services for William Howard Reddick of Viburnum, age 72, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the 1st Baptist Church in Viburnum. Visitaion will be Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 at the 1st Baptist Church in Viburnum. Interment will be in the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Cemetery in Viburnum. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.
Memorial services for Bryce Hindes of Rolla, age 67, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Eagles Lodge 2015 in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
