The Dent County Fall Festival gates will open at 5:00 tonight with games from toddler to age 16 in the livestock barn. There will be a silent pastry auction from 5:00 to 7:00 in the Exhibit Building and the Beauty Pageant will be held on the main stage at 7:00. A contestant in the pageant for Miss Dent County for age 16-21 is Dakota Inman of Salem. The contestants for Teen Miss Dent County for age 12-15 include Amanda Green from Jadwin and Keara Shaw of Salem. There are three contestants for the Miss South Central Missouri contest that include: Emily Stites, Avery Landers and Keagan Jordan all of Rolla, and the only contestant for Teen Miss South Central Missouri for age 12-15 is Michayla Frisbie of Rolla. On Friday, the gates open again at 5:00 and will feature medieval games and exhibits. You can enjoy an evening of Bluegrass in the livestock barn featuring Shirley Robertson’s Wild Rose Bluegrass Band from 6:00 t0 7:00, The Yadkin Creek Boys from 7:30 to 8:30 and the Highway 32 Bluegrass Band from 9:00 to 10:00. On Saturday, the final day of the Dent County Fall Festival, gates open at 9:00 in the morning with medieval games and exhibits. Kids and their dogs will be featured in the Dogs Fun Show at 9:30 and kids games at noon. The carnival matinee will be from 1:00 to 5:00 in the midway and then Thunder Valley Promotions will be presenting a Demolition Derby at the Dent County Fall Festival in Salem on Saturday, August 24^th. The Derby starts at 6:00 and will consist of full size cars, mini cars and there will be an Outlaw Class Heat, with the last car being the winner. Admission to the Demolition Derby is $10 for adults, $7 for ages 4 to 12 and kids three and under are free. Admission to the midway is free during the fair and wrist band specials of $13 will be offered each night to allow fairgoers to ride all the rides for one fee. For more information call 247-2606.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital held a tax rate hearing Tuesday evening in the Hospital Library.  The estimated total assessed value of real estate in the district is $187,668,241 and the total estimated value of personal property is $57,856,149. The board approved leaving the tax rate at $0.1908 pre $100 of assessed valuation. This is estimated to bring in $468,461 for 2014. After the tax rate hearing the board of directors went into a regular board meeting. Hospital Controller, Becky Cunningham gave the summary of operations for the month of July that showed a gain from operations of $30,943 with revenues over expenses for the month of $35,039. In-patient admissions were at 59 for the month. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gave the Nursing and Ancillary Services report. There were 829 emergency room visits with the average turnaround time of 127 minutes. There were 187 ambulance runs, 23 surgery cases, 136 home health visits, 8,543 lab tests, 1,014 radiological procedures, 192 CT scans, 24 MRI scans, 10 nuclear med scans, 382 rehab treatments, 249 dialysis treatments and 293 clinical visits. Lacy gave the ambulance average response times and board member Ray Bruno questioned if the hospital is comparing the same type of numbers with state averages since the state calls all go through 9-1-1 and this is not the case in the hospital district. He also says the Salem Memorial District Hospital has a much larger district to service than many other districts in the state. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the Hospital Auxiliary will conduct a Masquerade Jewelry fundraiser at the Dent County Fire Station on September 26 and 27, a Scrubs and Beyond fundraiser on October 17 and a Books are Fun fundraiser on November 12, both in the hospital library. Assistant Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas gave an update on the Electronic Medical Records status. The Critical Access Hospital software from CPSI went live on July 1^st and is meeting all base line requirements. Lacy reported that the results of the Community Needs Assessment Survey have been disseminated to the community through the media and the hospital website. The board approved the budgeted purchase of two new document scanners for the Medical Records department for $2,047 from PC Connection and a CPSI software license for Physician Documentation for a total of $100,000 with only a $10,000 deposit to be paid at this time. They also approved the non-budgeted lease buyout of a Toshiba R&F Room for $3,222 per month for 12 months. Board Chairman Dennis Fiebelman appointed Judy Thompson as Chairman of the Finance committee with Ray Bruno and Ken Sheriff on the committee. Cunningham reported that Healthcare Services Group has donated $2,000 to match the educational scholarships that the hospital recently made to Kendra Mobray, Samantha Lundy, Jessica Bland, Cheryl Ibrahim and Kim Bell. They will each receive $400.  The board then went into closed session.

City of Salem Youth Flag Football Program is coming up quickly. Sign-ups will be held on today and Friday, August 23^rd from 4:00 to 6:00 and then again on Thursday, August 29^th and Friday, August 30^th from 4:00 to 6:00 and the Final sign-up will be held on Saturday, August 31^st from 9:00 am until noon. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby at the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard Armory). This league is for all boys and girls that are currently in the 3^rd to 6^th grades. The cost is $20 per child. Carlos Beltran cranked a two-run homer as part of a six-run second inning and the St. Louis Cardinals held off a late rally to take the rubber match of a three-game set from the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-6, from Miller Park. Allen Craig and Matt Holliday also homered for St. Louis, which has won four of five heading into a four-game set with Major League-leading Atlanta. Shane Robinson added three hits, all singles. Jake Westbrook started for St. Louis and tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits. The Cardinals will start a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves tonight at Busch Stadium and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

Dayan Viciedo smacked a grand slam in the Chicago White Sox's 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in the middle test of a three-game set on Wednesday. Jeremy Guthrie (12-10) allowed five runs on nine hits over six innings for Kansas City, which has dropped four consecutive tilts and seven of its last nine. The Royals and White Sox will play again tonight.

Eastern Star and funeral services for Alice Louise Dale of Salem, age 84, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Eastern Star.

Funeral services for Louise E. Boxley of Salem, age 81, will be held today at 1:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Beverly Jean Schroeder of Salem, age 68, will be held today at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held on from 1:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery.

Memorial services for Robert Knueven of Salem, age 79, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery.
