The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the board heard from Mayor Gary Brown in reference to a Kid’s Day at the Dent County Fire Protection District Fire Station on September 22^nd where from 1:00 to 2:30, Air Evac and the Salem Memorial District Hospital would like to hold a crash rescue simulation on East Center Street. To do that, the street needs to be closed to traffic between Iron and Water Streets and the board approved that request. City Attorney Mark Weaver then stated that a public tax hearing had been held with no public comments at a rate of 62 cents per $100 assessed valuation. After the consent agenda was approved which showed a reduction in June sales tax of over $4,000, the board heard from City Engineer Bill Huffman in regards to the Planning and Zoning meeting for a reviewed use for a Day Care at 203 South Hickory to be operated by Jackie and Eric Schafer. The board heard opposition to the day care center do to parking and traffic problems on the narrow street and denied allowing the reviewed use at this time. Planning and Zoning wanted to see more support or non-support for the reviewed use. Alderman Jim McDaniels says that he received a number of reports about rats and high weeds at property at Sligo and Hunt, and it was later determined that some of the dirt that had been piled there was the city’s so they will have to level it out to clean up the property. City Engineer Bill Huffman reported on the well at the industrial park and that with the water being pumped at 125 gallons a minute, there is no sand. But once the pressure is increased above 150 gallons that sand is extracted. He recommended that the city go with a new pump that only pumps 125 to 135 gallons a minute and use the current casing. The original estimate for a larger pump was $16,000, but the smaller pump should run about $12,000, but that does not include a chlorinator which is already in the budget. Mayor Gary Brown reported that traffic counters have been all over town and that the city is checking the water and sewer lines of streets to be asphalted. The board approved keeping the police motorcycle at a cost of $1,530 and that is comprised of an $800 lease, two new headlights for $420 and the switching of equipment to the new bike for $310. The board approved Bill #3015 that contains the same wording as the state statutes so that now only one ticket has to be written for seat belt, child restraint and passengers in truck bed violations. They also approved Bill #3108 that requires registration of pit bulls within the city limits with an annual registration fee of $100 and other safety regulations. This bill does allow for people who have a pit bull moving within the city limits to keep their dog provided that pay the registration fee and follow the safety regulations. The board then approved the tax rate of 62 cents per $100 assessed valuation on personal property and real estate for the year 2007 in Bill #3107. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.The Dent County Fall Festival Board announces the opening of the 79^th Annual Dent County Fall Festival opening today at The Commons. The exhibits will be judged this morning before the Youth Building opens at 2:00 this afternoon. At 6:00 tonight, the annual Bakery and Pastry Auction will be held before Church Night is held on the main stage. There is no admission fee tonight. It is also Wrist Band Night where kids can ride all the rides they want starting at 6:00 for $15.00. Tomorrow, livestock will be arriving at the festival and needs to be in place by noon, and the Youth Building will open at 1:00. At 6:00 on the main stage, the Dent County Baby Contest will be held followed by the Dent County Princess, Junior Miss and Queen contest at 7:00. Admission is $2.00 for those ages 12 and over and it will also be Wrist Band Night where the kids can ride all the rides for $15.00. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers lost yesterday to Waynesville and will travel to Bakersfield tomorrow afternoon at 4:30.

Ryan Ludwick highlighted a four-run eighth inning with a two-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 5-2 win over the Florida Marlins in the opener of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Albert Pujols homered and Yadier Molina registered two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals, who continued their steady climb back into the NL Central race that started several weeks ago. With this win, the Cardinals have won seven of their last nine and trail both Chicago and Milwaukee by three games. Cardinal’s starter Adam Wainwright pitched six innings and allowed two runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision. Cardinal’s reliever Russ Springer struck out two in a scoreless top of the seventh and Troy Percival (3-0) worked around a two-out single by Treanor in the top of the eighth for the win. Jason Isringhausen tossed a scoreless ninth for his 24th save of the season. The Cardinals and Marlins play again tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Jim Thome finished 2-for-4 with a homer, a run scored and three RBI as Chicago topped Kansas City, 5-2, in the second installment of three between the clubs at U.S. Cellular Field. Paul Konerko and Danny Richar homered for the White Sox, who have won two in a row after an eight-game losing streak. Royal’s starter Leo Nunez (2-1) was charged with six hits and four runs over four innings in the loss, his first since 2005. Emil Brown went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Royals, who have lost three straight. The two teams play again this afternoon.

Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson has ended his holdout and has reported to training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson was at practice Tuesday afternoon, after agreeing to a five-year contract extension that will take him through the 2012 season. According to The Kansas City Star, the new deal will pay the 2003 first- round pick $45 million over the next six years. Johnson had been absent from training camp since it opened late last month. The former Penn State star set an NFL record last season with 416 carries and finished second in the league with 1,789 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. He also caught 41 passes for 410 yards with two scores out of the backfield.

Memorial services for Patricia Ann Wolford of Rolla, age 66, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Christ Church Episcopal in Rolla.  All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Donald Cheney, age 51, will be held at 1:00 today at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held today from 11:00 to 1:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Linore Massey of Springfield, formerly of Salem, age 94, will be held today at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until time for the service on today. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Memorial services for Bryce Hindes of Rolla, age 67, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Eagles Lodge 2015 in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
