The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Monday night. At the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting held prior to the regular meeting concerning the rezoning of 900 South McArthur from Residential R-1 to commercial, it was denied due to the lack of a vote. A public hearing on the 2013 tax rate for the city was held. The 2012 rate was $0.6243 per $100 assessed valuation on real estate and personal property, and the board could raise the rate to a maximum of $0.6334 per $100 assessed valuation. The assessed valuation for the City of Salem decreased from $46,594,563 last year to $46,445,743 in 2013. In the regular meeting, the board approved the FCC Narrow Band Radio upgrade for the radios at the well sites by Vandevanter Engineering for $8,488, and approved the bid from the Bank of Salem for the lease/purchase interest rate of 1.97% with no documentation fees for two dump trucks, a 4x4 pickup and five police cars for a budgeted total of $250,000. The board discussed the purchase of five new Dodge Charger police cars that feature a V-8 engine, and asked that the cars be rebid for ones that include a V-6 engine. City Administrator Clayton Lucas presented the board with plans from the Healthy Dent County for improvements to Salem Community Center at the Armory using NAP and in-kind funds, and also updated plans if they receive a CDBG grant in September. Lucas reported that a John Deere Tractor Mower engine is blown and it will cost about $6,500 to rebuild it. No action was taken by the board as the city will review their options as the other mowers from Parks and Recreation and the Street Department will be used to cover what the tractor did. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash gave the pool report and indicated that the pool averaged about 72 people per day. He said that there were no mechanical problems this year and he will have the financial report at the next meeting. Mayor Gary Brown stated that on September 7
th, another Cobra Rally would be held in downtown Salem, and the emergency sirens will be tested on Tuesday, September 3
rd. Economic Development Director Ray Walden said that the Timber Industry Parade and Fun Day will be held on Monday, September 2
nd. The board approved setting the tax rate for the City of Salem at $0.6334 per $100 valuation for personal property and real estate for the year 2013 by passing Bill #3273. The board also approved moving the September 16
th regular meeting date to September 23
rd due to the Missouri Municipal League Conference. The meeting was then adjourned.
The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held a public tax levy meeting Monday evening. A discussion was held on the tax rate for 2014. After a discussion concerning the budget and operating expenses, a motion was made to set the tax rate for 2014 at $0.2306 per $100 assessed valuation on personal property and real estate, which is up from the $0.2274. The motion was carried for all for the new tax rate and the tax rate levy meeting was then adjourned.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports for last weekend. On Friday, August 16th at 6:00 in the evening, a female subject reported her identity had been stolen. She filled out a written statement and provided the Deputy with a copy of her credit information from Experian Credit Monitoring Company. She stated in June of this year she was contacted by the Discover Credit Card Company about an alleged credit card application that contained her information. She stated that she has found multiple incorrect transactions originating in California. The Sheriff's Office has received several reports of fraud and scams so please if you have any concerns when it come to these types of incidents contact the Sheriff's Office. On Saturday, August 17th at about 10:30 at night, a Deputy responded to County Road 2150 in regards to a burglary. Upon arrival, the Deputy spoke with the victim, which stated that when he and his wife returned home the night before, is when they noticed the backdoor open and the lock laying on the floor. The victim stated several items were taken from their residence and that he would have to check the house and shed for a complete list of what was taken. Items taken ranged from tools, kitchen items, hunting item, 3 rifles, and jewelry. City of Salem Youth Flag Football Program is coming up quickly. Sign-ups will be held on Thursday, August 22nd and Friday, August 23rd from 4:00 to 6:00 and then again on Thursday, August 29th and Friday, August 30th from 4:00 to 6:00 and the Final sign-up will be held on Saturday, August 31st from 9:00 am until noon. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory (formerly the National Guard Armory). This league is for all boys and girls that are currently in the 3rd to 6th grades. The cost is $20 per child. For more information contact the Salem Parks & Recreation Department by calling 729-6290.
Sean Halton went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI and the Milwaukee Brewers scored six unanswered runs to get by the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-3, in the middle test of a three-game series. Lance Lynn (13-7) was tagged for all six runs, four earned, on nine hits over six frames as St. Louis had its three-game win streak snapped. Matt Adams beat the shift on the right side with an RBI single in the first inning, and Yadier Molina made it 3-0 in favor of the Cardinals with a two-run homer over the left-field wall in the fourth. The Cardinals and Brewers will play this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO Radio 1340 AM starting with the re-game show at 12:35.
John Danks spun eight shutout innings in the Chicago White Sox's 2-0 win over the Kansas City Royals that opened a three-game set. Ervin Santana (8-7) allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks over six frames for Kansas City, which has dropped three straight and six of its last eight tilts. The Royals and White Sox will play again tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Lillie Pritchett of West Alton, Missouri, age 71, will be held today at noon at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Platt Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
Eastern Star and funeral services for Alice Louise Dale of Salem, age 84, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Eastern Star.
Funeral services for Louise E. Boxley of Salem, age 81, will be held Thursday at 1:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
Funeral services for Beverly Jean Schroeder of Salem, age 68, will be held Thursday at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held on from 1:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery.
