The 80th Annual Dent County Fall Festival got underway on Wednesday. At the exhibits in the Youth Buidling, Town & Country Bank was the 1st Place winner of the Commercial Booth followed by The Bank of Salem who took 2nd Place. Salem Riverway Girl Scouts was the 1st Place winner of the Non-Commercial Booth followed by The Seventh Day Adventist Church who captured 2nd Place. The Best of Show Winners for 4-H were Olivia Elliott for the rebuilt tractor engine, Savannah Hanning for letters and pictures, and Mackenize Wullf for her quilt. During the judging for the Best of Show, JoAnn Pyles won for embroidery and her hand quilt; Meredith Parson won for her coconut cream pie; Barb Medlock won for pickled green beans; Clydene Johnson won for a vertical flower arrangement; Bill Gorman won for acrylic painting, and Zavier Cahill won for cherry tomatoes. Congratulations to all those who participated.  

Last night at the Pastry and Pie Auction, a total of $2,904 was raised. The highest selling item was Meredith Parson’s coconut cream pie which sold for $155.

The 80th Dent County Fall Festival continues tonight at “THE COMMONS”, located on Highway 72 North. At 7:00 pm tonight will be the crowning of the 2008 Miss and Jr. Miss Dent County along with the Dent County Princess, Dent County Baby and Little Mr. and Miss Dent County for 2008. Wristbands are $15 for the evening and $2 admission for those 12 and up. In the event of rain, the event will be held at the livestock sale barn.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at 6:00 in the hospital library. Prior to the regular meeting, the ere will be a public tax hearing to set the tax rate for the 2008 year. After the approval of the minutes from the July 24th meeting, Administrator Dennis Pryor will address the hospital activity calendar, legislative updates and the employee commitment to health challenge and auxiliary report. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will report on nursing services, ancillary services and will give the summary of operations and statistics for July. In Old business, there will be a physician office building report, and a strategic planning update, followed by the State-wide Hospital Employee Health Insurance Consortium and the Missouri Enterprise. During new business there will be the finance committee appointment, an annual bylaw review, the Board will discuss the Joint Board of Directors and Medical Staff Meeting to be held December 11th, and the employee holiday dinner on December 12th as well as hospital purchases. The Board may then go into closed session. The regular monthly meeting and the public teax hearing of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight beginning at 6:00 at the district administrative office boardroom. There will be a tax rate hearing to start out, followed by a budget hearing and then the regular meeting. Superintendent Steve Bryant will then address professional development days, the opening of school, MSBA fall meeting and annual conference and the NO Child Left Behind (NCLB) annual yearly progress report. In Old Business the Board is expected to approve the pest control bid. New business will consist of approving tuition, ASBR, and the tax rate for 2008/2009, amend the budget, approval of Developmental preschool agreement, and the School District Administrative Claiming Agreements with the Department of Social Services and MSBA. Also in new business, there will be a program evaluation on climate, approve the pilot performance based teacher evaluation plan, approve surplus property bids, consider resolution to prepay bonds, consider resolution for a bond election, appoint a waiver of proof of residency committee and hear resignations. The Board may then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The meeting and hearings tonight are open to the public.

The City of Salem Fall Youth Soccer Program will begin soon. The Salem Parks and Recreation Department will be holding signups for boys and girls ages 4 through 12 today and tomorrow from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Signups will also be held Saturday morning from 9:00 to 12:00 noon. The final signups will be held next Thursday and Friday, August 28th and 29th. The cost per child is $15.00. ALL signups will be held in the lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (the old Armory.) Jason LaRue hit a two-run homer, doubled and finished with three runs batted in, as St. Louis blasted Pittsburgh, 11-2, in the finale of a two-game set with the Pirates. Rick Ankiel also had a two-run blast, while Skip Schumaker went 3-for-4 with a walk and run batted in for the Cardinals, who split the series and ended a two-game slide. Todd Wellemeyer (11-4) allowed both Pirates runs on five hits and a pair of walks in five innings of work. He also struck out five on the way to winning his third consecutive start and fourth straight decision. The Cards will have the day off today.

Franklin Gutierrez's three-run home run sparked a five-run eighth and the Cleveland Indians battled back to top the Kansas City Royals, 8-5, in the second of three meetings between the clubs. Joakim Soria (1-3) had a rare breakdown out of the bullpen, allowing three runs on two hits and a pair of walks while recording just one out in taking the loss behind Gil Meche, who gave up just two hits and three runs -- only one earned -- while striking out nine in his seven-inning start. Mike Aviles was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI for Kansas City, which has lost seven of eight. The Royals and Indians play again this afternoon.

Kansas City Royals have signed former Cardinal pitcher Kip Wells for the remainder of the season.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson is expected to end his lengthy holdout. The club's web site cited team sources close to the situation as saying Jackson would return Wednesday night and take a physical on Thursday morning. Jackson is searching for a long-term contract extension from the club with negotiations expected to resume upon the running back's arrival.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Kyle Lohse was suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount on Wednesday. Lohse was penalized for an incident in his last start on Sunday, when he threw a pitch near the head of the Reds' Edinson Volquez during the fifth inning of Cincinnati's 7-3 win. The 29-year-old right-hander decided to appeal the decision and the suspension will not begin until a ruling has been made.

The Kansas City Royals have placed pitcher Luke Hochevar and outfielder Mitch Maier on the 15-day disabled list; and they have  recalled pitcher Josh Newman and outfielder Joey Gathright from Omaha (PCL).

Funeral services for Bessie L. “Bunny” Pines of Salem, age 89, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the SMDH Long Term Care Center.

Funeral services for Rita Ruth Lennaman Gonzales of Keyesport, Illinois, age 71, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Walker Cemetery in rural Maries County. Memorials are suggested to the Walker Cemetery.

Funeral services for Neil Perkins of Wesco, Missouri, age 66, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Wesco Cemetery in Wesco, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the American Heart or American Lung Association.
