The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning.  In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that work would be finishing up in Bunker and the rest of the District 1 crew would be catching up on maintenance and putting up road signs. Simpson also said that as soon as it dries up routine grading would begin. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that crews are in the Boss area and on the Round Pond Road cleaning trees from the roadway. The rest of District 2 is catching up on maintenance and putting up road signs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a Central Region Workforce Investment Board Meeting Wednesday in Columbia. At 9:00 the Commission voted to award the bid for Rural Addressing to S.D.R for $77,000; Commissioner Simpson said that this amount is for address conversion only; the additional costs for services would be negotiated when a contract is written up. At 10:00 the Commission held the annual Tax Rate Hearing.  The assessed valuation of Dent County for the 2007 tax year is $148,281,298. The General Revenue tax rate stayed the same at 3.5 cents per $100 assessed valuation and that would generate approximately $70,000. The Road and Bridge rate also remained the same at 25.50 cents per $100 assessed valuation and that would generate about $370,000. The Senate Bill 40 Board tax rate dropped from 16 cents to 15 cents per $100 assessed valuation which would produce approximately $227,000 in revenue, and the Senior Citizens Service Board tax rate dropped from 4.6 cents to 4.56 cents per $100 assessed valuation that would generate about $63,775 in revenues. Also at the meeting Debbie Smith came by to discuss with the Commission the possibility of holding evening meetings so more people could attend. The Commission explained that meetings are held during regular office hours because they need to be able to contact other offices, county and statewide. The Commission said that an evening meeting would be held if there was an issue or a decision to be made that would have a major effect on Dent County; such as Rural Addressing, and an evening meeting was held for that. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
