The Dent County Commissioners held their tax rate hearing Monday morning for the General Revenue Fund, Road and Bridge Fund, the Senior Citizens Service Fund and the SB40 Fund, which serves the Sheltered Workshop. Present at the hearing were the commissioners, the Dent County Clerk, Larry Sensintaffer and Stan Podorski from KSMO Radio. The current rate for the General Revenue Fund is $0.035 per $100 assessed valuation that was budgeted to generate about $77,000 of revenue. Even though sales tax revenue is down and assessed values are also down, the commissioners voted to leave the rate at $0.035 per $100 assessed valuation. The Road and Bridge Fund tax rate is currently set at $0.255 per $100 assessed valuation and that was budgeted to generate around $400,000 of revenue. The commission voted to leave the rate at $0.255 per $100 assessed valuation. The current Senior Citizen Service Fund tax rate is $0.0467 per $100 assessed valuation and that generated about $70,000 in revenue. The Senior Citizens Service Fund Board voted to leave the rate at $0.0467 per $100 assessed valuation. The commission approved leaving the rate as is. The Senate Bill 40 Fund tax rate that benefits the Sheltered Workshop was $0.15 per $100 assessed valuation that generates about $240,000. The SB40 Fund Board recommended that the rate stay at $0.15 per $100 assessed valuation and the commissioners approved the recommended rate at $0.15 per $100 assessed valuation. The tax rate hearing was then adjourned.
The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6090 and 6470, while just grading would be done on county roads 4080, 5410, 5420 and 6320. He did say that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5100, 5103 and 6580, and that a man would be going to Springfield to get oil for the Dura-Patcher to repair various chip and seal roads including county road 5015 today. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that materials would be added, grading would be done and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2120. He also reported that grading would be done on county roads 4010, 4437 and 4480; that materials would be added to county road 2115 and that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3210. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency meeting today in Winona. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for the beginning of August. On Friday, August 2nd at 10:40 in the morning, an officer made contact with a 31-year old Salem female in the 200 block of South Henderson who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. She was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated. At 11:55 the morning, an officer was sent to the Salem City Pool in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered the concession stand by force and took candy, valued at $70. At 2:06 that afternoon, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1500 block of North Highway 19 in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that someone forcefully entered a residence and caused property damage totaling $265. On Saturday, August 3rd at 11:17 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of William in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered a residence by force and stole a 44-caliber handgun, valued at $500. On Sunday, August 4th at 7:10 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took a video game, valued at $60, from a residence in the 900 block of South Hickory. On Monday, August 5th at 12:16 in the morning, an officer was called at the Salem Police Department in reference to an assault. The investigation revealed that a 30-year old Salem male had assaulted a 37-year old Salem female at a residence in the 400 block of West Seventh. She was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Tuesday, August 6th at 5:47 in the evening, an officer was sent to the 600 block of South Hickory in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took two bicycles, valued at $230, from the yard of the residence. The bicycles were recovered abandon and returned to the owner. Anyone with information regarding the burglaries and thefts is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

Matt Carpenter drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals took an 8-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Matt Adams tied the game in the eighth with a pinch-hit RBI single, and David Freese added a pinch-hit, two-run double later in the frame for the Cardinals, who have won three straight and six of eight. Shelby Miller gave up two runs on five hits with four walks and eight strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Michael Wacha gave up three runs in the seventh, but got the win thanks to his club rallying in the eighth. The Cardinals and Brewers will play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:35.
The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will start a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox tonight at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals are 64-59 on the year and are 8 ½ games back in the AL Central. First pitch tonight is set for 7:10.
City of Salem Youth Flag Football Program is coming up quickly. Sign-ups will be held on Thursday, August 22nd and Friday, August 23rd from 4:00 to 6:00 and then again on Thursday, August 29th and Friday, August 30th from 4:00 to 6:00 and the Final sign-up will be held on Saturday, August 31st from 9:00 am until noon. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby at the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard Armory). This league is for all boys and girls that are currently in the 3rd to 6th grades. Funeral services for Albert S. Lada of Independence, formerly of Viburnum, age 82, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Eastpoint Family Church-Children's Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.
Military services for Cecil R. Crowe of Salem, age 86, will be held today at 2:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. Interment will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Lillie Pritchett of West Alton, Missouri, age 71, will be held Wednesday at 12:00 noon at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:30 Wednesday morning until service time. Interment will be in the Platt Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
Eastern Star and funeral services for Alice Louise Dale of Salem, age 84, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Eastern Star.
