The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to three calls on Thursday. The first call for a structure fire came in at 12:31 pm on Highway 68 at property owned by Donald & Elizabeth Prater of Salem. Upon arrival, firefighters found a structure and vehicles fully involved. The cause of the fire is unknown, and was a total loss. Mutual Aid was called in from the Lenox, Jadwin, and Montauk Fire Departments and the Salem Memorial District Hospital. A total of 19 firefighters responded to the call with no injuries reported. The second call for a structure fire came in at 5:42 pm on County Road 411 at property owned by Rebecca & Jeff Stokes of Salem. Upon arrival, firefighters found one story on fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation and the Fire Marshall was notified. Moderate damage was reported. A total of 18 firefighters responded to the call with no injuries reported. The third call, for a gas leak came in at 9:54 pm at #4 Iron Street at the Salem Sewing Center. Upon arrival, firefighters investigated a possible gas leak in the hall. A total of 16 firefighters responded to the call with no injuries reported.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 PM. During the hearing of persons, Air Evac and the Salem Memorial District Hospital are requesting that East Center Street be closed between Iron and Water Streets from 1:00 to 2:30 for a Crash Rescue Simulation on September 22nd. City Attorney Mark Weaver will report on the public tax hearing held prior to the meeting. After the approval on the Consent Agenda, Planning & Zoning Board President Sean Curley will report on their meeting being held prior, on the reviewed use for the operation of a Day Care Center located at 203 South Hickory, requested by Eric & Jackie Schafer. Alderman Jim McDaniels, Bill Riley, Mike Whitley, and Jim Jackson will discuss miscellaneous items involving the city followed by Mayor Gary Brown’s comments. During the Introduction of Bills, requested by Chief Jadwin, Bill #3105, an ordinance to regulate the use of seat belts and child restraints in a motor vehicle and passengers in truck beds within the City of Salem will be read. Bill #3106, an ordinance regulating the ownership of pit bulls within the City of Salem, requested by the Committee on vicious dogs will be addressed. The Board will have two ordinances to decide which they prefer. Also, Bill #3107, an ordinance required to set the tax levy for 2007 for real estate and personal property for general revenue purpose will be addressed. After the approval of bills, the Board will then go into Closed Session for the discussion of personnel, real estate and litigation. The Planning & Zoning Meeting, the Public Tax Hearing and the City of Salem Board of Alderman Meeting are open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a couple of brush fires. The first call came in at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon about three miles out on W Highway at property owned by Aaron White of Salem. Upon arrival, firefighters found about a quarter of an acre on fire. The fire was determined to have started from a burning trash pile and was under control within 15 minutes. A total of eight firefighters responded to the call, with no injuries reported. The second call came in at 4:36 Wednesday afternoon on P Highway at property owned by Charles Bacon of Salem. Upon arrival, firefighters found about two to three acres on fire with a structure in danger. The fire was determined to have started from the grass and was under control with in 30 minutes. A total of 13 firefighters responded to the call and no injuries were reported.

The high school sports season opens today, weather permitting, as the Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host the Newburg Lady Wolves starting at 4:30 at the Salem Freedom Activity Center Field. Another game is scheduled for tomorrow as the Lady Tigers will host the Lady Tigers from Waynesville also at 4:30 at the Salem Freedom Activity Center Fields.

Sunday's third test of a four-game series between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field was postponed. The teams played 2 1/2 scoreless innings before a 1 hour, 48-minute rain delay, after which the game was postponed. No makeup date has yet been scheduled. Chicago leads the National League Central division by a game over Milwaukee, and posted its third straight win with Saturday's 5-3 triumph in the second game of this set. St. Louis is four games behind the Cubs in the NL Central standings. Chicago is 7-3 against the Cardinals this season. The two teams are scheduled to play again this afternoon at 1:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Lefty Lenny DiNardo won his career-high fifth straight decision by tossing a five-hitter over a career-high eight innings, as the Oakland Athletics avoided a three-game sweep against the Kansas City Royals at McAfee Coliseum with a 6-1 win. Joey Gathright went 3-for-3 for the Royals, who last completed a three-game sweep in Oakland from June 16-18, 1988, and are 9-3 in their last 12 visits to McAfee. Kyle Davies (5-10), failing to bounce back from a loss in his last start, allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks over five frames for Kansas City. Kansas City will be at Chicago tonight to face the White Sox.

Funeral services for Virginia F. Moreland of St. James, age 69, will be held today at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the Flag Springs Cemetery in St. James.

Funeral services for Edward “Bud” Carty of Salem, age 86, will be Tuesday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Robert D. “Bob” Curtis of Salem, age 72, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 Tuesday. Interment will be in the Round Pond Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ber Juan Park in Rolla made to the attention of Christy Bullock.

Memorial services for Patricia Ann Wolford of Rolla, age 66, will be held Wednesday morning at the Christ Church Episcopal in Rolla.  All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Christ Church Episcopal.
