The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the courthouse, In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2470, 5490 and 5500, while materials would be added and grading would be done on county road 2460. He went on to say that materials would also be added to Dent County Roads 2480 and 5615, while brush would be cut on county road 4080. He also said one man would be screening brown rock. Purcell included that he would be attending a Meramec Regional Development Corporation meeting Tuesday at noon in St. James. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2240, 2270 and 4280, while brush would be cut on county roads 2210 and 2370. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting held last Thursday at the MRPC offices. Skiles indicated that Leo Sanders from Crawford County was elected chairman of the TAC Committee and that he was elected vice-chair. Skiles said that MoDOT gave an update on the projects they currently have scheduled and 15 of them included some work in Dent County. Skiles also reported on the External Relations Committee meeting from Thursday. He said he was re-elected chairman of that committee with Leo Sanders being re-elected vice–chair. He also said the MRPC awards dinner this year would be held at Camp Mihaska in Bourbon this year on November 13th. The committee also discussed the veto session coming up starting September 10th. The committee recommended and got full MRPC Board approval to recommend in a letter to all MRPC Region senators and representatives to not override the vetoes on the bills that would negatively impact cities and counties in the MRPC Region. At the MRPC meeting Thursday night, Skiles reported that Don Shaw, the CEO of the Central Electric Cooperative in Jefferson City, spoke on the new EPA emission restrictions and how they could affect future electric rate increases in the state. He also said the MRPC received an update from Joe Driskill, the Director of the Sustainable Ozarks Partnership, on the possible reduction of 5,400 military and civilian jobs from Fort Leonard Wood by 2020. He indicated that initial impact would be 13% less jobs in the immediate Fort Wood area and could eventually lead to the reduction of 59% of the Fort Leonard Wood permanent positions. The decision to make the reduction is in the hands of the Department of Defense. The public comment period on this is until August 25th. It also has information to e-mail or write letters to your congressmen and women. This reduction would be a major negative impact to the economy in the MRPC area and people will need to speak up. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that last day to register to vote in the General Election would be October 8th. At the last meeting, Travis Tindal and Jennifer Wilson with Nform Architecture out of Springfield, MO, discussed their jail and justice facilities, administrative building projects and other county projects. They also discussed the Heritage Grants that are distributed from DNR for historical renovations. These are 25-75 matching grants. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse with the tax rate hearing at 10:00. The meetings are open to the public. 

An accident occurred at 10:38 Thursday morning in Crawford County on Interstate-44 at the 203 eastbound entrance ramp. According to the highway patrol, 56-year old Deborah Land of Salem was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger east when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned due to the right rear tire being blown out. Deborah Land and an occupant, 18-year old April Land of Salem, suffered serious injuries and were flown to Mercy in St. Louis. They were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed by Mile’s Towing.

A couple of accidents occurred Saturday on the Meramec River in Crawford County. The first accident happened at 4:00 in the afternoon about two and a half miles upriver from the Onondaga State Park. According to the highway patrol report, 32-year old Joseph Davison of St. Louis jumped out of a 14-foot raft and landed on a tree. Davison suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital. The second accident occurred at 5:15 in the evening about two miles upstream from the Onondaga State Park. According to the highway patrol report, 23-year old Anthony Wilson of Florissant dove head first into shallow water from a 14-foot raft. Wilson suffered serious injuries and was air lifted to St. John’s in St. Louis.

An accident occurred at 10:45 Saturday night in Reynolds County on Route B about fourteen miles west of Ellington. According to the highway patrol report, 16-year old Jacey Skaggs of Bunker was driving a 1998 Chevy pickup north when the vehicle skidded off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch. Skaggs suffered minor injuries and was taken to Southeast Health Center in Ellington. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevy sustained minor damage and was removed by the owner.

The Final signups for the City of Salem Fall Youth Soccer & Flag Football programs will be held in the front lobby on Thursday, August 21st and Friday, August 22nd from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Salem Community Center located at 1200 West Rolla Road. Fall Youth Soccer will be for children age 4-12 and Youth Flag Football will be for children in 3rd thru 6th grades. The cost for the Fall Youth Soccer and Youth Flag Football is $20 per child. Jhonny Peralta drove in the game-winning run in the 10th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals eked past the struggling Cincinnati Reds, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game series. The Cardinals and Reds play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO starting with the pre-game at 6:40.

Erik Kratz hit a pair of home runs to help the Kansas City Royals to a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins in the finale of a four-game set. The Royals will be in Colorado tonight to start a two-game series with the Rockies.

Funeral services for William Leonard Watson of Salem, age 70, will be held at 1:00 today at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Pauline Adams of Steelville, age 97, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday. Interment will be in the Pleasant Point Cemetery in Steelville.

Funeral services for Louie Edward Roberts of Salem, age 92, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Charity of Choice.

Funeral services for Howard Horne of Salem, age 87, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Donald Lee Gregory of Sligo, age 69, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 t0 8:00. Interment will be in the Sligo Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sligo United Methodist Church of Sligo Cemetery.
