The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2460, 2470, 6220 and 6380. He said that ditch work was going to be done on Dent County Road 4180, and that a culvert would be installed on Dent County Road 5410. Materials will be added to both roads. Purcell reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6090, and that he was not able to attend the MRDC meeting Wednesday as he was taking care of some road issues. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading would be done on Dent County Road 2130 and 3330 while rock will be added and grading done on Dent County Road 2120. Larson went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent Count Roads 2320, 2340 and 3233. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the Salem Board of Aldermen meeting Monday night and they agreed to allocate up to $10,000 for the Interoperable Solutions telecommunication system that would link emergency management, the city police department, the sheriff’s department and the fire departments together so that they could all communicate with each other. He also said that the Salem Memorial District Hospital is very interested in the system for their ambulance service and emergency calls. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock said that there would be a tax sale on the courthouse steps at 10:00 Monday morning for properties with outstanding real estate taxes for the last three years. He said that as of Thursday, there were 13 properties that still had taxes owed against them. Owners of those delinquent properties have until Monday morning before 10:00 to get those taxes paid before the property can be sold. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education met Thursday night at the district administrative offices. The board held a tax rate hearing showed that the district would need to charge a rate of $2.75 per $100 assessed valuation in accordance with Amendment 2 to continued to receive full state aid. The rate would be voted on in the regular meeting. In the Superintendent’s report, Rumpf went over the professional development report that included the training done this year by the teachers. She said that the unofficial first day of school count was 1,392 students, which is about 20 less than last year. Rumpf stated that the open houses were well attended, including the secondary schools. She reported that the MSBA Fall Conference would be held September 29th through October 2nd and three board members have signed up to attend. Rumpf also reported on the “No Child Left Behind” AYP report and that the Salem district did not meet the expected results in fiscal year 2011. They did not reach the anticipated levels in mathematics and communication arts. In new business, the board approved the Annual Secretary of the Board report that showed that the district last year increased their reserves from 23.40% in 2009-2010 to 26.46% last year. The report showed that fund balances increased over $590,000 from the 2009-10 year to 2010-11 year. It also included the improvements to the school and staff training in 2010-2011 year. The board approved the report. They also approved the tax rate of $2.75 per $100 assessed valuation before approving the budget for the 2011-2012 year. The budget showed that projected revenue was estimated at $12,114,456 and the projected expenditures are $12,070,990 leaving $43,466 in excess revenues over expenses. John Smith went over the A+ Partnership plan and said that there is really only one change form last year and that is in the reinstatement of the Alternative School at Salem. The board approved the plan. The board also approved the transportation of a freshman student to his father’s home after school after being brought to school by his mother who lives in the R-1 district. The board approved the request. The board went into closed session to discuss personnel and a student issue.

U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced the schedule for her upcoming annual Emerson Farm Tour, a series of meetings with agriculture producers throughout the Eighth Congressional District.  On Monday, August 22nd from 10:00 to 11:00 Emerson and her staff will be at Missouri Tie and Timber in Bunker On Tuesday, August 23rd Jo Ann Emerson and her staff will be in Phelps County at Lenox Farms in Rolla from 8:30 until 9:30 in the morning.

The St. Louis Cardinals will travel to Chicago to face the Cubs this weekend starting today at 12:45 on KSMO Radio. They will also play Saturday at 2:35 and Sunday night at 6:39, also on KSMO Radio.

Dustin Pedroia continued his impressive hitting at Kauffman Stadium by driving in three runs, including the go-ahead single in the fifth inning, as the Red Sox earned a 4-3 win over the Royals. Alex Gordon went deep for a second straight night, belting a two-run homer, but the Royals lost for the ninth time in 11 contests. Luke Hochevar (8-10) fanned six, but was tagged for eight hits and four runs over six frames. The Royals and Red Sox will play again tonight at Kaufmann Stadium.

Funeral services for Earnie Bowen of Salem, age 55, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County 4-H.

Funeral services for Richard Franklin Johnson of Steelville, age 90, will be held today at 1:00 at the Family Life Fellowship Church in Moberly. Interment will be in the Huntsville Cemetery in Huntsville, Missouri. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Joseph E. “DD” Thompson of Bunker, age 79, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service time. Interment will be in the Piatt Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.

Funeral services for James Noil Thomas of Salem, age 82, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Jeremy Steven Kirkpatrick of Fenton, formerly of Rolla, age 30, will be held Saturday at 12:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Memorial service for Elisabeth Jane “BJ” Kinyon of Rolla, age 80, will be held Saturday, August 20th at 1:00 at the Christ Episcopal Church of Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Christ Episcopal Church of Rolla building fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
