The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, a traffic stop, disorderly conduct and a leave without paying. On Monday, August 14th at 12:40 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 100 block of North Carty in reference to property damage. The report revealed that an individual driving a white in color SUV backed into a fire hydrant and left the scene. On Saturday, August 15th at 11:30 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem man for driving while drugged. He was issued summons to appear in court and released to a parent. On Sunday, August 16th at 4:15 p.m. an officer discovered a disturbance at the BP Convenience Store. The report revealed a subject became irate because the attendant refused to sell cigarettes when he had no identification. This led to the arrest of an 18-year-old St. Louis man for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons, posted bond and was released to appear in court. At 7:38 p.m. that evening, an officer was detailed to 500 Highway 19 South to Phil Mart in reference to someone leaving without paying for fuel. The report revealed the driver of a black Chevy pickup with chrome bed rails pumped $44.07 of fuel and left without paying for the fuel. If anyone has any information regarding the property damage or the leaving without paying for fuel reports, which are both still under investigation, they are asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will be holding the tax rate hearing on Thursday, August 20th beginning at 5:45 pm in the hospital library, but will not be conducting their monthly board of director’s meeting due to a death in Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor’s family. The monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will be rescheduled for a later date.

An accident happened at 6:12 pm on Thursday, August 13th at the intersection of Highway 19 and Franklin Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a brown 2001 motorcycle driven by David Bownas of Peoria, Illinois was traveling southbound on highway 19. A blue 1994 Buick Century driven by Anthony McGuirk of Salem started from westbound Franklin and stated that sun glare obscured his vision. McGuirk stated he did not see the motorcycle. The motorcycle slid and collided with the Buick ejecting Bownas from the motorcycle. Bownas suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and then flown to St. John’s in St. Louis. The motorcycle and the Buick sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports for August 10th through the 16th. On Monday, August 10th at 5:25 in the evening, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to Highway 19 North due to a grass fire. Upon arrival firefighters extinguished the fire and brought the scene under control at 5:50 pm. The fire was determined to be from leaves and trash burning. A total of six firefighters responded to the call. On Tuesday, August 11th at 12:57 am, four firefighters responded to a call to assist the Salem ambulance in the 300 block of North Russell with a patient.  On Thursday, August 13th 6:44 pm, the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a motor vehicle accident on Franklin Street. Upon arrival, seven firefighters found two vehicles were involved with injuries and assisted the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The scene was under control at 7:15 pm. On Saturday, August 15th at 4:22, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to setup a landing zone at the station. A total of six firefighters responded to the call. On Sunday, August 16th at 9:47 in the morning, the fire district responded to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 32 East at Dent County Road 4244. Upon arrival firefighters found there was a one-vehicle rollover. A total of six firefighters responded to the call and the scene was under control at 10:40.

Thursday will be the first day of school in Dent County and everyone is reminded to drive with even more caution in the morning and afternoon with children now waiting for busses or walking to school. Also, the R-80 Schools will dismiss early on Monday, August 24th. Dismissal times are William Lynch at 2:23 pm, the Upper Elementary at 2:33 pm, and the Junior and Senior High Schools will dismiss at 2:46 pm. 

The South Central Specialty Crop Growers Association Workshop will be held on Thursday, August 20th at My Place Restaurant in Salem. These workshops are for specialty crop growers and those interested in becoming specialty crop growers. Specialty crops cover a broad range of products including vegetables, fruits and cut flowers. Registration will begin at 8:30 am followed by an introduction to the South Central Region Specialty Crop Growers Association. At 10:00 Andy Read University of Missouri Extension will talk about “Getting the Most Out of Your Product” with marketing strategies. At 11:00 Dr. Will McClain from the University of Missouri Extension will discuss “Managing Missouri Soils and Soil Fertility” and lunch be provided at noon. There is no charge for the workshop and lunch, but pre-registration is required. To register or for more information contact the Dent County Extension Center at 729-3196.

Orlando Hudson and Andre Ethier both finished 3-for-4 and drove in a run to help the Dodgers take a 7-3 win over the Cardinals in the middle contest of a three-game series. Cardinal’s starter Mitchell Boggs (1-2) struggled in four-plus innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and three walks. Brendan Ryan and Khalil Greene each had a hit and RBI for St. Louis, which saw its five-game winning streak halted. The Cards and Dodgers wrap up their series tonight starting at 8:50 on KSMO Radio.

Billy Butler doubled three times and drove in two runs, as the Kansas City Royals clipped the White Sox, 5-4, in Freddy Garcia's season debut with Chicago. Butler now has 41 doubles this season, which is second in the majors and within striking distance of Hal McRae's single-season franchise record of 54, set in 1977. The first baseman's batting average now stands at .301. John Buck added a two-run homer, as the Royals rebounded from a loss in the opener of this three-game series on Monday. Gil Meche (6-9) allowed four runs on eight hits and five walks with two strikeouts over five innings to earn the win. The Royals and White Sox will wrap up their series this afternoon in Chicago.

The Kansas City Royals optioned third baseman Alex Gordon to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday and activated reliever Kyle Farnsworth from the 15-day disabled list.

Funeral services for Dorothy Lorraine Sullivan of Belleview, age 77, will be held today at 11:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Radford Cemetery.

Graveside services for Franklin J. Hedrick of Olathe, Kansas, age 82, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All local arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Faron E. Roark of St. James, age 51, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Flag Springs Cemetery in St. James.

Funeral service for Jessica D. Whitaker of Salem, age 27, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boss Assembly of God Youth Group.

Funeral services for Carl J. “Shorty” Parker of High Ridge, MO, age 85, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Gladys Maxine Wilson of Salem, age 87, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Rector Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Smith Surgery Fund.
