The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Friday, August 6th at 11:37 a.m. an officer was detailed to the area of Franklin and Water Streets in reference to a suspicious person. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem female for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.  She was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. At 12:30 p.m. that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1600 block of South Water in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown used a debit card to steal $50.00 cash. On Sunday, August 8th at 1:04 p.m. an officer responded to a call from Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $37.03. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. At 6:20 p.m. that evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Chevrolet 350 cubic inch motor valued at $500.00 from the garage of a residence in the 700 block of South Elmer. On Monday, August 9th at 11:05 in the morning, an officer was detailed to Town and Country Bank on Highway 32 East in reference to counterfeit money. The investigation of the report revealed that a 100-dollar bill had been taken in with a deposit. At 10:30 that same night, an officer was sent to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $17.44.  He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Tuesday, August 10th at 12:01 in the early morning, an officer responded to the area of Hickory and Ellis Streets in reference an intoxicated person pushing a lawnmower on the street. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem female on a fugitive warrant from Phelps County. She was incarcerated on the warrant pending extradition. At 1:41 p.m. that afternoon, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to shoplifters.  The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 25-year old female and a 17-year old female both of Salem for stealing merchandise valued at $13.00. Both were issued summons to appear in court and were released. On Wednesday, August 11th at 1:05 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of West Acuff in reference to property damage. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown cut lines on an air-conditioning unit.  The value of the damage is approximately $2900.00. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, counterfeit money or the property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

According to the Dent County Prosecutor’s Office, second-degree murder charges have been filed against 30-year old Michael Douglas Warren of Salem in the oxycodone overdose death of 23-year old Kristi Firestine of Salem on July 23rd. Warren was also charged with tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution, distribution of a controlled substance, and keeping or maintaining a public nuisance. He was arrested last Thursday and is being held in the Dent County Jail on a $400,000 cash only bond.

An accident happened at 9:03 in the evening on Thursday, August 12th, at the intersection of Highway 72 and Route H. According to the Salem Police report, a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Virginia Sutton of Salem, was traveling northbound on Highway 72. At that time, a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Dustin Counts of Salem was traveling eastbound on Route H, came to the intersection at Highway 72 and was not able to stop at the stop sign at which time the Chevrolet collided with the Volkswagen. Counts suffered injuries in the accident and refused treatment at the scene. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.

The Regional Base of the Year award is presented to the base in the Air Evac Lifeteam system that best exemplifies the company’s mission, including community service, education, and scene work. The Salem Air Evac Lifeteam base is located at 4326 West Highway 32 in Salem and was opened in December 2003.

Casey McGehee hit a two-run homer and Dave Bush was solid in six innings on the mound, as the Milwaukee Brewers held off the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2, in the opener of a brief two-game set at Busch Stadium. Albert Pujols hit a solo homer for the Cardinals, who have lost three straight since a four-game win streak. Jaime Garcia (10-6) went six innings in the start, allowing three unearned runs on five hits to take the loss. The Cards and Brewers play this afternoon at 12:55 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals and third baseman Zack Cox, the 25th overall pick in June's draft, came to terms on a contract just prior to a midnight deadline Monday. Cox led the University of Arkansas with a .429 batting average with nine home runs and 48 RBI in 59 games this season. The sophomore was the starting third baseman at Arkansas in both of his seasons. The Cardinals also announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Jordan Swagerty, a second-round pick (75th overall).

Wilson Betemit and Yuniesky Betancourt each hit a home run to back six strong innings from Zack Greinke, as the Kansas City Royals edged the Cleveland Indians, 2-1, in opener of a three-game set. Greinke (8-11) limited Cleveland to one run in six innings, giving up five hits and walking three. Joakim Soria pitched the ninth to get his 34th save and seal the victory for the Royals, who have won two in a row. The Royals and Indians play again tonight.

The 12th Tiger Club is sponsoring a Football Parade to be held on Friday, August 27th. That will be the Salem Tigers first home football game against Thayer. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade. Floats should line up around 5:30 between the Dent County Courthouse and East Salem Hill. Funeral services for Casey Brown of Licking, age 13, will be held today at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Hutchason Cemetery.

Funeral services for Rosie Bell Shivers of Sullivan, formerly of St. James, age 91, will be held today at 11:00 at the Assembly of God Church in St. James. Graveside services will be held at the Sunset Hills Cemetery in Potosi at 1:30. Memorials are suggested to the Assembly of God Church in St. James or Sullivan. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Elbie Hickman of Salem, age 70, will be held Friday at 6:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time. Interment will be held a later date.

Funeral services for Elsa Elvira Day of Bunker, age 97, will be held Saturday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Swiney Cemetery in Bunker.

Memorial Mass for Rita Ann (Verkamp) Hertfelder of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of St. James, age 76, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Immaculate Conception Church in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Cremation arrangements for Sharon Kay Kerrigan of Omaha, Nebraska, age 53 are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Graveside services for Georgia K. Wisdom of Salem, age 75, will be held at a later date in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
