An accident happened at 11:49 Friday morning in Iron County on Route KK about four miles west of Bixby. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Chevrolet driven by 43-year old Glenda Castre of Bunker was traveling southbound on Route KK. Castre failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting Castre from the Chevrolet. Castre suffered serious injury and was Air Evac’d to St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Abney’s Wrecker.

An accident occurred at 10:25 Friday night in Dent County on Dent County Road 5130 about a mile north of Route P. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Ford Escape driven by 34-year old Brian Griffith of Salem, went out of control on a gravel road, traveled off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree. Griffith suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Salem Memorial Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. An occupant in the vehicle, 27-year old Amy Lato of Salem, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. Lato was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Escape sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. Griffith was cited for DWI and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers starting at 7:00. Prior to the regular meeting, the board will meet at 6:00 to go into closed session followed by the Public Tax Hearing for setting the property tax rate for 2008 at 6:45. During the hearing of persons, Laurie Walker is requesting a follow-up to issues concerning animal abuse/neglect in Salem and proposing a dog-licensing ordinance. During bids, City Engineer Bill Huffman will present the bids for sidewalk construction and the City requested bids for a computer for the Economic Development Director and the City Engineer. After approval of the resolution declaring the results of the primary election regarding the sales tax issue, City Attorney Mark Weaver will report on the Public Hearing held prior concerning the setting of the property tax rate for 2008. Alderman Bill Riley, Jim Jackson and Kenneth Nash will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem, along with Jim McDaniels as he would also like to discuss the natural gas crisis’ that have happened in the last few weeks and brush pickup in the city. Mayor Gary Brown will also give his comments on various items involving the City. Back in 2003 when the City made a verbal agreement with Air Evac, an agreement was presented to the City but was never signed. During the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3139 is the ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City and Air Evac Ems, Inc. for the leasing of property located at the Salem Municipal Airport. Bill #3140 is a bill that is required by State Statue that the Board set the property tax rate for 2008 by Ordinance. After approval of the bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, The Board will go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting and the public tax hearing for the City of Salem Board of Alderman are open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage and theft. On Tuesday, August 12th at 9:30 PM, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of North Pershing reference property damage. The investigation revealed persons unknown had broken 2 sidewalk lights. On Wednesday, August 13th at 6:00 AM, officers were sent to 1103 South Highway 19 to the BP Convenience Store in reference to leaving without paying for fuel. The investigation revealed a male subject pumped $32.75 of fuel into a gray Ford pickup and left without paying for the fuel. If anyone has any information, please call 729-4242.

Edinson Volquez hurled seven innings of shutout ball and the Cincinnati Reds salvaged the final contest of a three-game series with a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Kyle Lohse (13-6) took the loss surrendering three runs on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts for the Cards. The surprise right-hander has now won just once in six starts after a 12-2 start. Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker had two hits and an RBI each while Troy Glaus added an RBI hit in defeat. The Cardinals remain on the edge of contention in the NL-Central, trailing the first-place Chicago Cubs by 7 1/2 games and the second-place Milwaukee Brewers by two games in the divison and the wild card race. St. Louis had won four straight and six of eight overall coming into the game. The Cards are off today and face Pittsburgh Tuesday.

Alex Rodriguez finished 3-for-3, homered, scored three times and drove in five as the New York Yankees used an early barrage of offense to subdue Kansas City, 15-6, in the series finale of a three-game set from Yankee Stadium. Jason Giambi hit a grand slam for the Yankees, who won the final two games of the set. Billy Butler and Ross Gload each knocked in two runs for the Royals, who have dropped five of six. KC starter Brian Bannister (7-12) suffered the loss, as he was shelled for 10 hits and 10 runs over one-plus innings. He is now 0-6 with three no-decisions in his last nine starts. The Royals have the day off today.

Matt Leinart threw for 62 yards and a touchdown as the Arizona Cardinals downed the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-17, in preseason action. Tyler Thigpen went 16-for-27 for 174 yards, one touchdown and one interception while Larry Johnson rushed 14 times for 61 yards for the Chiefs (1-1). Brodie Croyle started at quarterback and went 7-for-13 with 38 yards.

Travis Minor rushed 11 times for a total of 39 yards and scored the game's only touchdown, as the St. Louis Rams edged the San Diego Chargers, 7-6, in the second preseason game for both teams. Antonio Pittman, who led the Rams (1-1) last week with 21 yards on six carries, led the team in rushing again with nine touches for 67 yards. The Steven Jackson-less Rams garnered 184 yards on the ground. Marc Bulger connected on 7-of-14 passes for 56 yards, but two of those tosses were intercepted. Randy McMichael caught three passes for 54 yards.

Michael Phelps became the winningest athlete at a single Olympics on Sunday morning when he teamed with his U.S.teammates to win the 400-meter medley relay for his eighth gold medal in Beijing, breaking Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record. Phelps swam the butterfly in the third leg, pulling the Americans back into the lead after breaststroker Brendan Hansen had lost the cushion AaronPeirsol built in the backstroke. Jason Lezak closed out the win in the freestyle leg, giving the Americans a time of 3 minutes, 29.34 seconds for a new world record.

Funeral services for Lugean Melba Halbrook of Salem, age 83, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
