The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that work crews would be patching various chip and seal roads including Dent County Roads 5013, 6150, 6180 and 6300. He indicated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2470, 2480, 4080, 4150, 5520 and 6255. Purcell reported that workers would be cleaning up storm debris at various locations and that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6300. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that workers would be clearing about a mile long swath of debris and trees down on Dent County Road 5225. If there is time, he said that the workers would be working on the bridge on Dent County Road 3210 trying to clean out the culverts. Larson went on to report on the Council for a Healthy Dent County meeting he attended on August 10^th and said that they elected new officers and are in an ownership transition stage from now until November. He said that they would be holding their “Ultimate Girls Night Out: Fun, Food and Fitness” on September 29^th from 5:00 to 9:00 at the Salem Freedom Activity Center for women 16 years of age and older. The admission price will be $5.00. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the attended the CCAM meeting last week and help set up the speakers for the next training in February as well as exciting and informative programs. He also attended a Transportation Advisory Committee meeting Thursday and was introduced to the new area engineer for the Central District, Preston Kramer who will be working out of Rolla. Skiles further went to the meeting Thursday night at the Salem City Hall Auditorium on the closing of access at Sinking Creek. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports of burglaries and a vehicle theft. On Monday, August 8^th, Nichole M. Rosenburg was arrested at 602 South Pershing Street for possession of drug paraphernalia after the Dent County Sheriff’s Deputies located three syringes in her possession. Rosenburg was transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office and was issued a summons for “Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia”, was fingerprinted and then released with a court date set for September 9, 2011. On Thursday, August 11^th, the Dent County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Flat Nasty Off-Road Recreational Park on Highway ZZ for a report of a burglary. The evidence on the scene indicated that a person or persons unknown used forced entry to get into the office area and stole $45.00 from the cash register as well as some food and drink items. On Friday, August 12^th, the Dent County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 300 block of Private Lane 315 for a report of a burglary. The homeowner stated that he had been gone and upon returning home he noticed that his garage door was open. The homeowner entered the garage and realized that $1,625 worth of fishing rods and reels had been stolen. That same day the Dent County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a cabin located on Dent County Road 4080 for a report of a vehicle theft. The victim reported that his 1991 Ford F-250 had been stolen. The evidence on the scene indicated that a person or persons unknown had rolled the vehicle down a hill and loaded it onto a trailer. The victim later noticed several other items missing. Anyone having any information on the burglary or thefts is being asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department at 729-3241.

The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities. In 2010, 234 people were killed and 957 seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver. For this reason the Missouri State Highway Patrol vigorously enforces Missouri's DWI laws all year long. To promote public awareness Troop I troopers will join other Missouri law enforcement agencies in the You Drink You Drive You Lose campaign August 19^th through September 5^th. Troop I will participate in statewide sobriety checkpoints and DWI saturation patrols enforcing Missouri’s DWI laws and keeping impaired drivers off the road. Consequences of drunk driving include jail time, loss of their driver licenses, or being sentenced to use ignition interlocks. Insurance rates increase. Other financial effects include attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential of losing one’s job or job prospects. When family, friends, and co-workers find out, violators can also face tremendous personal embarrassment and humiliation.

Garrett Jones' solo homer in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates over the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-4, in the second test of a three-game series. Arthur Rhodes (0-1) stayed on to pitch the 11th after recording the final two outs in the 10th. Jones stepped to the plate and crushed Rhodes' 2-2 offering over the wall in right. Chris Carpenter allowed three runs on five hits in a seven-inning start for St. Louis. Albert Pujols hit his 30^th homer of the year while David Freeze and Matt Holiday had RBIs in the game. The Cards and Pirates play tonight at 5:30 on KSMO Radio.

Robinson Cano's three-run homer in the fourth inning provided the difference, as the Yankees out-slugged the Royals, 9-7, at Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City rookie starter Danny Duffy (3-7), allowed a career-high eight runs in three-plus innings. Melky Cabrera had a homer in the game, his 16^th of the year, Eric Hosmer doubled in a run and catcher Salvadore Perez drove in two runs for Kansas City. The Royals have dropped their last four games. The Royals and Yankees play again tonight in Kansas City.

Funeral services for Richard Franklin Johnson of Steelville, age 90, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Family Life fellowship Church in Moberly. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00-8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Huntsville Cemetery in Huntsville, Missouri.

Funeral services for Joseph E. “DD” Thompson of Bunker, age 79, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service time. Interment will be in the Piatt Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
