The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a Tax Rate Hearing and the August monthly meeting at the District Administrative Offices Boardroom tonight beginning at 6:00 pm. After the tax rate hearing and approval of the agenda and communications Superintendent Steve Carvajal will update the Board on Professional Development Days, the opening of school, the MSBA Fall Meeting and Annual Conference, an annual progress report and the Exemplary School Bus Maintenance Award. In new business the Board will approve the 2011/2012 annual Secretary of the Board Report (ASBR), the 2012 tax rate, the official 2012/2013 budget, the MASA School Credit Card and resignations. In old business the Board address bids on a school vehicle. The Board will then adjourn its regular meeting and go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The Tax Rate Meeting and the regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education are open to the public.
The Salem Police Department has released their reports for the beginning of August. On Wednesday, August 1st at 2:47 in the afternoon, officers were informed by the United States Marshals Service of a fugitive from Midland, Texas who had an active warrant and was believed to be in the City of Salem. Officers located the suspect, a 33 year-old male, and he was taken into custody without incident. He was incarcerated pending extradition. Later that evening at 7:00, an officer made contact with a 45-year old Salem male who had two active warrants from the City of Salem. He was taken into custody and was later released with a court date after posting bond. At 9:37 that same night, an officer transported a 51-year old Salem male to Phelps County Regional Medical Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Thursday, August 2nd at 5:16 in the morning, an officer made contact with a 48-year old Salem female who had an active warrant from Dent County. After making contact with her in the 1300 block of South Gertrude, she was taken into custody and was later released with a court date after posting bond. At 2:30 that afternoon, an officer transported a 51-year old Springfield male to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains in lieu of a mental commitment order. Later that evening at 8:47, an officer was dispatched to the Walnut Motel in reference to property damage. The investigation led to the arrest of a 29-year old Ava male for breaking a commercial glass door valued at $375. He was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Missouri has been allocated more than $1 million to assist currently enrolled Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) producers who have suffered setbacks from the drought. Nationally, $16 million in financial and technical assistance has been made available to help eligible crop and livestock producers in 19 states. Missouri received the fifth-highest share in the nationwith $925,000 allotted for EQIP producers and $100,000 for WHIP producers. Obligations must be made by September 1st for Missouri to receive its more than $1 million share. Missouri State Conservationist J.R. Flores has made $300,000 of EQIP funding available to producers with failed practices from an active EQIP contract, while $625,000 has been approved for existing, unfunded EQIP applications previously determined eligible for 2012 EQIP funding. Producers can modify current EQIP contracts to allow for grazing, livestock watering and other conservation activities to address drought conditions in accordance with planning guidance. The entire $100,000 allotment of WHIP funding has been designated solely for the re-application of failed practices in active WHIP contracts. Landowners and producers eligible for funding should contact their local NRCS field office for further information and procedures. Missouri anglers can now get high-tech help locating fishing spots with the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Find MO Fish mobile application for smart phones, tablets, and other mobile communication devices. MDC developed the mobile app with Timmons Group (timmonsgis.com), a national leader in innovative geospatial solutions. Using the Find MO Fish application, users can view location maps of Missouri’s major lakes, rivers and streams. The application also generates fast and accurate driving directions to numerous MDC boat ramps across the state. The application also allows users to find exact locations of underwater fish structures and guide their boats to their favorite fish attractors. Find MO Fish is available as a free download on the Google Play Store and Apple iStore. Multiple iOS and Android smartphones and tablets are supported by the application.
The 12th Tiger Club is sponsoring a Football Parade to be held on Friday, August 24th. This will be the first home football game for the Salem Football Tigers. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade and show their Tiger Pride and Spirit. Floats and vehicles should line up around 5:30 pm, between the City of Salem Administration Building and the East Salem Hill. The parade will take off around 6:00 pm and will arrive at the Salem High School Football Stadium before the beginning at the game. David Freese and Allen Craig both homered to lead the St. Louis Cardinals past the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-2, in the middle test of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Rafael Furcal added a two-run triple for the Cardinals, who have won four of their last six games. Adam Wainwright (11-10) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts over six innings to win his fourth straight decision. Jason Motte tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his 27th save of the year. The Cards and Diamondbacks will play again tonight at 6:40 on KSMO.
The Kansas City Royals rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to beat the Oakland Athletics, 3-2, at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday. Will Smith(4-4) held the A's to a pair of runs on five hits in seven innings to pick up his second straight win. Chris Getz knocked in the winning run with his two-out double for the Royals, who have won the first two games of this three-game set. The Royals and Athletics will play again tonight.

Funeral services for Everett E. Fanger of St. James, age 70, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Meramec Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Crawford County.
Funeral services for Lucille S. Moore of Viburnum, age 93, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Activity Center at Stonecrest, Carmel Baptist Church, or Serenity Hospice. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum.
Memorial services for Dona C. Smith of Salem, age 69, will be held Saturday at 12:00 (noon) the home of Phillip Christ on Doss Road. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Alfred Ward of Steelville, age 84, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from noon until time of the service. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery in Steelville with full military honors.
