The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday for their regular meeting. Commissioner Purcell was not in attendance due to a previous commitment. In the road report, Rusty Chamberlain from District 1 said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5080, 5390 and 6040, while materials would be added and grading done on county roads 2470 and 5085 with just rock being added to county road 5400. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Roads 2120, 2150, 4283, 4285, and 4287. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended the SACBA board meeting Monday and they would like to remind everyone that the Community Betterment judges will be in Salem on September 10th. He also attended a Transportation Advisory Committee meeting, External Relations Committee meeting and MRPC meeting Thursday night. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock brought in a e-mail that was sent out by the collector’s association to be aware that a group called the National Liberty Alliance that appears to be an off shoot of the Sovereign Citizens, is going around to county courthouses asking to set up their own court system as well as asking to be funded by the county. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said the first day for absentee voting for the General Election would be September 23rd. At the last meeting, Commissioner Gary Larson signed the Notice of Award for the bridge construction project on Dent County Road 3210 to Robertson Contractor, Inc. from Poplar Bluff for a cost of 340,678.72. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 7:00 Thursday morning in Webster County that took the life of a man from Seymour. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by 55-year old Matthew Payton of Seymour was traveling westbound on US 60 in Seymour, entered the intersection and failed to yield to a 2000 Kenworth Tractor Trailer driven by 56-year old Danny Drury of Salem. The Harley Davidson struck the Kenworth ejecting the driver of the motorcycle. Webster County Deputy Coroner Robbie Jeringan pronounced Payton dead at the landing zone at 8:36 am. Everyone involved was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.

An accident occurred at 4:30 Wednesday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway 19 about six miles south of Cherryville. According to the highway patrol report, 48-year old Becky Siegle of Edgar Springs was driving a 2013 Kia Optima north when she swerved to avoid a deer, traveled off the right side of the road, struck an embankment, and overturned. Siegle and an occupant, 50-year old Pamela Barnum of Edgar Springs, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. They were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Kia was totaled and removed from the scene by Mile's Towing of Steelville.

The public is invited to bring their ideas to an informational meeting at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park today, Friday, August 15th. The meeting will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Black River Center. Park representatives will provide information on future plans for the facility and answer questions. Visitors are invited to share feedback and suggestions about park services and operations. This informational meeting is part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to ensure citizens have input regarding the facilities and services offered in state parks and historic sites. Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park is located on Hwy N, 13 miles south of Pilot Knob. Individuals requiring special services or accommodations to attend the meeting can make arrangements by calling 573-883-3603.

The City of Salem Fall Youth Soccer & Youth Flag Football programs are just around the corner. Fall Youth Soccer will be for children age 4-12 and Youth Flag Football will be for children in 3rd thru 6th grades. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby today, Friday, August 15th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and on Saturday, August 16th from 9:00 am to 12:00 (noon) at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory located at 1200 West Rolla Road. Final sign-ups will be held Thursday, August 21st and Friday, August 22nd from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The cost for the Fall Youth Soccer and Youth Flag Football is $20 per child. Jon Jay's pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth inning helped give the St. Louis Cardinals a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres to begin a four-game series. Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run home run for the Cardinals, who have won their past two games. John Lackey pitched seven strong innings, giving up two runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. The Cards and Padres play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 6:40. 

Billy Butler's two-run single capped a deciding seventh-inning burst, as the Kansas City Royals claimed a 7-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics in the finale of a four-game series between AL division leaders. Jarrod Dyson and Norichika Aoki also drove in two runs for the Royals, who finished their seven-game homestand with a 6-1 mark. They remained a half-game up in the AL Central on Detroit. The Royals start a four-game series with the Twins tonight.

The St. Louis Rams will host the Green Bay Packers on Saturday at 3:00 in week two of the NFL preseason. The Kansas City Chiefs will play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at 7:00.

Visitation for David Oprean of St. James, age 69, will be held this morning from 10:00 to 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Southard Cemetery.

Funeral services for Kenneth Elwood Dunn of Steelville, age 84, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Myers Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Memorial services for Betty Lou Miskell of Salem, age 72, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 until service time. There will be no interment.

Funeral services for Margaret Sue Asbridge of Salem, age 50, will be today at 2:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until 2:00 today. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Asbridge family.

Funeral services for Fleda Alene Litty of BeeBe, Arkansas, age 100, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Roberts Cemetery.

Funeral services for Patricia Lou Lindgren, age 86, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 12:00 (noon) at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Delber Day Cancer Center.

Funeral services for Ruth Stewart of Salem, age 93, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Hospital Long Term Care.

Funeral services and visitation for Mildred Albers of St. James, age 90, will be held Sunday from 1:00 to 2:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati with a Mass of Christian burial at 2:00. Interment will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Mary Jane Sutterfield of Salem, age 91, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00. Interment will be in the Sutterfield Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for William Leonard Watson of Salem, age 70, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.  Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Pauline Adams of Steelville, age 97, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday. Interment will be in the Pleasant Point Cemetery in Steelville.
