The Salem Police Department has released their reports for the end of July. On Friday, July 27th at 10:38 that night, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 25-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that same night at 11:05, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of North Hickory in reference to property damage. That investigation revealed that someone unknown broke a dual pane window of a residence valued at $300. On Tuesday, July 31st at 8:17 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a male suspect took a pair of boots valued at $30 from the store without paying for them. Later that same morning at 9:37, an officer was dispatched to Phil-Mart in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a female approximately 50 years old, driving a red Ford Ranger, pumped $26.37 in fuel and left without paying. That night at 9:30, an officer was dispatched to Phil-Mart in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a male driving a gold passenger car pumped $16.57 in fuel and left without paying. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage or theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages all bowhunters to participate in its annual bowhunter observation survey. This survey provides valuable information that assists MDC in gauging the health of wildlife populations, such as deer and turkey, and helps staff make harvest management decisions. MDC mails surveys to participating bowhunters in early September. From September 15th through November 9th, participants record the date, county, number of hours spent bowhunting, and the number of deer, wild turkeys and furbearers observed during their hunts. After November 9th, participants mail the postage-paid surveys back to MDC so the information can be analyzed. To participate in the 2012 survey, email Paul.Rogers@mdc.mo.gov and write “Bowhunter Observation Survey” in the subject line. Participation requests must be received by Sept. 1. Include name and mailing address in the body of the email. Bowhunters can also send their name and address to: Bowhunter Observation Survey, Missouri Department of Conservation, 3500 E. Gans Road, Columbia, MO 65201. MDC began conducting its bowhunter observation survey in 1983. Beringer said more than 190,000 bowhunting permits were distributed in 2011 but only approximately 7,000 bowhunters participated in last year’s survey. The Sesquicentennial Civil War Ceremony for the Skirmish at Ashley is set for Saturday, August 25th, at 10 a.m., at Mount Olive Baptist Church and grounds on Highway VV near the Texas County line four miles west of Montauk at what was then called Stephenson Mill. At Stephenson Mill a Fort was built about 1863 where Union Soldiers were stationed. The Fort was burned in 1865 on the Current River at what is now Montauk State Park. The event is free and is open to the public, and is sponsored by the Missouri Folk Arts Program and the Dent County Historical Society. Mount Olive Baptist Church is hosting the event. Colonel Michael Roderman, Commanding Officer of the Missouri 2nd Artillery Confederate States, a three-term president of the Missouri Civil War Re-enactors’ Association, will display a 2,300-pount cannon that can fire a 10-pound shot. Bring your lawn chairs if the Dent County Burn Ban has been lifted to watch a small Civil War Skirmish Reenactment lead by Col. Michael Roderman and Officer Garrett Gable of the Missouri 2nd Artillery Confederate States, who will do live weaponry demonstrations. An encampment is also planned the night before the ceremony if the reenactment can be held. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is looking for the 2012 Older Workers of the Year. Missouri’s annual Older Worker of the Year contest seeks to honor a Missouri resident who is 60 or older, employed at least 2 hours a week, and displays dependability and new skills on the job. The winner and regional finalists will be recognized at a two-day awards ceremony in October in Jefferson City. Nomination forms for the Older Worker of the Year are available on the Department of Health and Senior Services’ Web site at www.health. mo.gov/ownomform.pdf. The 12th Tiger Club is sponsoring a Football Parade to be held on Friday, August 24th. This will be the first home football game for the Salem Football Tigers. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade and show their Tiger Pride and Spirit. Floats and vehicles should line up around 5:30 pm, between the City of Salem Administration Building and the East Salem Hill. The parade will take off around 6:00 pm and will arrive at the Salem High School Football Stadium before the beginning at the game. Joe Kelly spun 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball and the St. Louis Cardinals took an 8-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game set. Kelly (3-5) gave up two runs on six hits and only walked two while fanning six. Matt Holliday smacked a two-run homer and Jon Jay cracked a solo shot for the Cardinals, who will play the Diamondbacks again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 6:40.
The St. Louis Cardinals placed pitcher Brian Fuentes on the restricted list Tuesday. Fuentes has informed the team that he needs to step away from the game due to personal reasons. St. Louis recalled reliever Trevor Rosenthal from Triple-A Memphis to fill in.
Jeremy Guthrie hurled seven scoreless innings and the Kansas City Royals used a five-run fifth to dispatch the Oakland Athletics, 5-0, in the opener of a three-game set. Guthrie (2-3) scattered three hits and walked two while striking out eight to earn his second consecutive win. Billy Butler, Chris Getz, Eric Hosmer, Alex Gordon, and Alcides Escobar drove in a run each for the Royals, who have won five of their last seven. The Royals and A’s play again tonight.

Funeral services for Everett Fred Schoen of Salem, age 84, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Weese Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Schoen family.
Graveside services for Robert L. Bartlett of St. Petersburg, Florida, age 94, will be held today at 2:00 at the Steelville Cemetery with military honors. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Everett E. Fanger of St. James, age 70, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday night from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Meramec Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Crawford County.
Funeral services for Lucille S. Moore of Viburnum, age 93, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service at the church.
