Thursday night at the 83^rd annual Dent County Fall Festival on the main stage, the Miss Dent County and the Jr. Miss Dent County winners were announced. The Jr. Miss Dent County title as well as Miss Congeniality Award winner went to Marissa Blaylock, while the 1^st Runner up was Makenna Farrar. The second contest of the night was for Miss Dent County and the 2011 Miss Dent County title went to Emily Sullivan. Miss Congeniality was awarded to Ashlee LaRue and the 1^st Runner up was Emily Smallwood.

An accident occurred on Saturday, August 13^th at 11:50 in the morning in Dent County on Highway 72 about five miles north of Bunker. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2006 Chevrolet Z-71 driven by 53-year- old Patricia Gore of Bunker traveled off the right side of the roadway when Gore fell asleep, struck several trees and came to rest on the shoulder of the roadway. Gore suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was towed by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Livestock Show was held all day Friday with the auction being held on Saturday. Award winners at the show included Desirae Hickernall with the Grand Champion Cured Ham while Cade Sullins had the Reserve Champion Cured Ham. In market lambs, the Overall Champion Lamb, Champion Jr. Showman and Reserve Daily Gain Champion Awards went to Brady Strader with Londyn Cook earning the Reserve Overall Champion, Reserve Champion Live Show and Reserve Champion Average Daily Gain awards. Brooke Adams earned the Champion Average Daily Gain and Cheyenne Sercl earned the Champion Carcass Awards with Brooke Shults earning the Reserve Champion Carcass. Kayla Gott won the Champion Live Show award and Tyler Wofford won the Champion Senior Showmanship Award for his lamb. In market hogs, Sierra Hagler won the Overall Champion Hog and Champion Live Show awards.  Brooke Adams won the Reserve Champion Overall.  Brady Strader won the Champion Carcass and Champion Jr. Showman award, and Cody Wofford earned the Reserve Champion Live Show and Reserve Champion Carcass awards.  Jacob Paul’s hog won the Champion Daily Gain Award while Bailey Martin earned the Reserve Champion Average Daily Gain. Tyler Wofford won the Senior Showman Champion award.  In market steers, the Overall Grand Champion and Champion Live Show awards went to Cody Wofford. Landon McDonald earning the Reserve Champion Overall award and was also the Average Daily Gain Champion. The Reserve Champion Average Daily Gain award went to Kayla Gott, and the Reserve Champion Live Show award was won by Ryan Blaylock. Carcass Champion award went to Sierra Hagler while Eddie Fleetwood’s steer won the Reserve Champion Carcass award. Dalton Smith earned the Jr. Showman Champion award with Tyler Wofford winning the Sr. Showman Champion award. Congratulations to all the FFA and 4-H members and their animals for a fine show and auction at the Dent County Fall Festival. 

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their regular meeting Monday night in the City Hall Council Chambers at 7:00. Before the Aldermen meeting, the Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing at 6:30. The hearing will be for a special use permit for an in-home business at 1006 East Center Street and the subdividing of 700 South Pershing Avenue. After roll call and hearing of persons, the Aldermen will go into closed session to discuss personnel. After closed session, there will be a public hearing to discuss the public tax rate for 2011 and hear from the Planning and Zoning Committee. In unfinished business, the board will discuss the employee handbook, the contracting of solid waste pickup and disposal services, and a setting of the property tax rate for 2011. The mayor and the director of public works and engineering will give their reports before City Clerk Mary Happel presents Bills #3235, 3236, 3237, and 3238 for approval. Resolution 17-2011, a resolution adopting the City of Salem employee handbook, will also be presented. Bill #3235 is an ordinance amending the 2010 City of Salem fiscal year budget. Bill #3236 is an ordinance revoking Chapter 16, the garbage and trash ordinance, and enacting a new ordinance retaining to the public health, safety, and welfare of the regulating and collection of solid waste. Bill #3237 is an ordinance amending the ordinance pertaining to the issuance of liquor licenses. Bill #3238 is an ordinance levying a tax for every hundred dollars assessed to real estate and personal property for general revenue purposes. In new and miscellaneous business, there will be discussions about the draft lease agreement with the Commons for July 4^th of next year, the intercommunications system, and appointment of Assistant City Clerk. The Board will then go into closed session for the discussion of litigation, real estate, and contracts. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

The Dent County 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction Saturday brought in a record $143,694.50 from buyers for the 136 items that were auctioned. The leading buyers in terms of animals purchased included Interstate Regional Stockyards who purchased two hams, three lambs, four hogs and three steers; Canoak USA who purchased a lamb, eight hogs, and five steers; the Bank of Salem who bought two lambs, three hogs and four steers; Intercounty Electric who purchased a lamb, three hogs and two steers; Phelps County Regional Medical Center who bought one lamb, three hogs and two steer; Phil Mart who bought a ham, two lamb, two hogs and two steers; Progressive Ozark Bank who purchased a lamb, two hogs and two steers; Salem Livestock Auction who bought five hogs and two steers, Town and Country Bank who purchased two hogs, a lamb and two steers; Fidelity Communications who purchased two hogs and two steers; and Godi Excavating who purchased two hams, one hog and one steer. There were a total of 53 buyers in all who purchase the 15 cured hams, 15 lambs, 73 hogs and 33 steers.

Albert Pujols hit a monstrous homer during a four-run first inning, helping the Cardinals to a 6-2 victory over the Rockies in the rubber match of a three-game series. Yadier Molina finished with three hits and two RBI for St. Louis. Cardinal’s starter Edwin Jackson (2-1) was pulled with one out in the sixth inning because of cramping in his right hamstring. He allowed two runs on eight hits and three walks, and departed the game with two runners on base. Jason Motte got St. Louis out of the inning, and Octavio Dotel struck out two to strand the bases loaded in the seventh. Dotel finished with four strikeouts in two innings of work. The Red Birds will be in Pittsburgh tonight at 5:30 on KSMO.

John Danks pitched six strong innings to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 6-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in the finale of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.  Mitch Maier ripped a two-run single, while Jeff Francoeur and Melky Cabrera had doubles for the Royals, who have dropped eight of their last 10. Jeff Francis (4-13) was tagged with the loss after lasting only 3 2/3 innings and giving up six runs on 10 hits while walking a pair and striking out one. The Royals will host the New York Yankees to start a three game series tonight.

Funeral services for Pastor Elmer “Dooley” Garrison of Steelville, age 81, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held Tuesday night from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery with full military honors.

Funeral services for Norma Jean Brown of Bourbon and formerly of Steelville, age 68, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Hibler Cemetery in Steelville.

Memorial service for Elisabeth Jane “BJ” Kinyon of Rolla, age 80, will be held Saturday, August 20^th at 1:00 at the Christ Episcopal Church of Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Christ Episcopal Church of Rolla building fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
