The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6020, 6210, 6570 and 6575. Simpson also said that material would be hauled to Dent County Road 5170, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5600. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4050, 4060 and 4430. Tune also said that material would be hauled to Dent County Road 2540, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3180. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a series of meetings yesterday afternoon and evening in St. James. He attended a Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting, an Operations Committee Meeting and a MRPC Board Meeting. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the annual Tax Levy Hearing will be held this coming Monday at 10:00 for the General Revenue Fund, Road and Bridge Fund, Senior Citizens Fund and Sheltered Workshop Fund. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
Union Electric Company d/b/a AmerenUE has filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission seeking to adjust the infrastructure system replacement surcharge (ISRS) on the bills of its natural gas customers. The surcharge first appeared on customer bills in April. AmerenUE is seeking to adjust the current ISRS to reflect infrastructure replacement investments made by the natural gas company from November 1, 2007 through May 31, 2008. These costs for natural gas pipeline replacements and relocations are not currently included in AmerenUE’s rates. Residential customers currently pay a surcharge of 74 cents a month. AmerenUE’s proposal would change the surcharge to $1.00 a month. Applications to intervene and participate in this case must be filed no later than August 27, 2008. If you enjoy answering questions on the TV trivia shows, or playing trivia games, then this is the event for you. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will be putting the FUN back in FUNdraiser when they host their semi-annual “Trivia Night” on Saturday, September 20th at 6:00 PM. The event will be held at the Salem City Hall at Washington and 2nd Streets. There will be ten categories with ten questions in each category. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 teams, with $200 going to the first place team. A prize will be given for the most creative team name and a raffle during the evening. The reigning Champions – “The Forrest Gumps” from the US Forest Service in Salem will be defending their title and will enjoy special food and table decorations. Compete as a team; bring your family, friends & neighbors. Teams of up to 8 people will participate for $100. Food – popcorn and cookies – will be provided along with drinks. Teams are encouraged to bring food for their table. A limited number of teams will be allowed to participate, so gather your team and call 729-8163 to reserve your table.
The monthly recycle day will be held tomorrow. Tin/steel cans and glass and plastic bottles are accepted and can be taken to the corner of 3rd and Grand Streets in Salem between the hours of 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. Everyone is asked to please empty all jugs and bottles, discard caps and lids and flatten the items to save space.

Todd Wellemeyer and three Cardinals relievers combined on a four-hit shutout, and Ryan Ludwick provided all the offense in St. Louis' 3-0 win over the Florida Marlins. Wellemeyer (10-4), a former Marlin, gave up just three hits in 7 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and four walks as he lowered his ERA on the season to 3.79. Ludwick hit a two-run homer and an RBI double for the Cards, who took three of four from the Marlins. Russ Springer came out of the bullpen and struck out Jorge Cantu in the 8th inning after Wellemeyer tired to end that threat, and Ron Villone and Ryan Franklin worked around one hit in the ninth to nail down the win. The Cardinals face Cincinnati this weekend with tonight’s game starting at 5:50 on KSMO.
Jim Thome hit a three-run home run and the Chicago White Sox tied a major league record with four consecutive home runs as part of a 9-2 win over the Kansas City Royals, completing a three-game sweep. Paul Konerko, Alexei Ramirez and Juan Uribe each followed Thome's long ball with home runs of their own in the sixth to tie a major league record which was last accomplished by the Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees on April 22, 2007. Jose Guillen drove in a pair of runs for the Royals. Kyle Davies (5-4) gave up three runs on nine hits in five innings of work to pick up his second straight loss. The Royals play three games against the Yankees in New York starting tonight.
Michael Phelps easily won his sixth gold medal of the Beijing Olympics by beating Hungary's Laszlo Cseh and U.S. teammate Ryan Lochte in the 200-meter individual medley on Friday morning. Then, he got back in the pool and qualified for a chance at No. 7. Phelps pulled within two wins of breaking Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record for gold medals in one Olympics, a feat he will try to accomplish this weekend. Already the winningest Olympian ever, Phelps secured his record 12th career gold medal by lowering his world record mark in the 200 IM by .57 seconds, touching with a time of 1 minute, 54.23 seconds.
