An accident occurred on Tuesday, August 5th at 12:55 in the afternoon on Highway 32 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, Mary Isreal of Fredericktown was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze east when she slowed to make a lane change and was struck from behind by a 1997 GMC Savana, driven east by Gustin Anderson of Salem. The GMC crossed the centerline and ran off the north side of the road before coming to a final rest. The Chevrolet continued east and ran off the south side of the road before coming to a rest. Anderson stated that he was looking down at his cell phone and didn’t see the Chevrolet. Anderson suffered minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. Isreal suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. There were three occupants in the Chevrolet that suffered injuries. The adult in the front seat suffered minor injuries but refused treatment while the adult in the back seat suffered moderate injuries and was taken to SMDH and later taken to the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. The infant in the back seat suffered serious injuries and was taken to SMDH and later taken to the Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. The infant was not in a child restraint seat at the time of the accident.

An accident occurred at 4:45 Tuesday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway 19 about four miles south of Cherryville. According to the highway patrol report, 51-year old Stacey England of Salem was driving a 2008 Sucker Punch Sallys motorcycle north when he failed to negotiate a curve, traveled o ff the right side of the roadway, and struck a tree. England suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. England was later charged with driving while intoxicated as well as careless and imprudent driving resulting in an accident. 

The public is invited to bring their ideas to an informational meeting at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park on Friday, August 15th. The meeting will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Black River Center. Park representatives will provide information on future plans for the facility and answer questions. Visitors are invited to share feedback and suggestions about park services and operations. This informational meeting is part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to ensure citizens have input regarding the facilities and services offered in state parks and historic sites. Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park is located on Hwy N, 13 miles south of Pilot Knob. Individuals requiring special services or accommodations to attend the meeting can make arrangements by calling 573-883-3603.

The City of Salem Fall Youth Soccer & Youth Flag Football programs are just around the corner. Fall Youth Soccer will be for children age 4-12 and Youth Flag Football will be for children in 3rd thru 6th grades. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby on Thursday, August 14th and Friday, August 15th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and on Saturday, August 16th from 9:00 am to 12:00 (noon) at the Salem Community Center located at 1200 West Rolla Road. Final sign-ups will be held Thursday, August 21st and Friday, August 22nd from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The cost for the Fall Youth Soccer and Youth Flag Football is $20 per child. The 12th Annual Football Parade will be held on Friday, August 29th. Groups can line up starting at 5:30 on the East Salem Hill and the parade will begin at 6:00. All businesses, clubs, youth groups, etc are welcome to attend. For more information, call Stephanie Floyd at 247-1441.

Matt Carpenter had three hits and scored twice as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Marlins on Wednesday, 5-2, to avoid getting swept in Miami for the first time since 1995. Justin Masterson (2-1) allowed just three hits over seven efficient innings. Matt Adams drove in a pair of runs and Masterson had his first career RBI for the Cards, who will start a four-game series with the San Diego Padres tonight at Busch Stadium. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

Jason Vargas tossed his first complete game of the season and the surging Kansas City Royals bounced back from Tuesday's loss to defeat the Oakland Athletics, 3-0, in the third of four games. Omar Infante hit a two-run homer and Salvador Perez supplied a sacrifice fly for the Royals, who have won nine of their last 10 games. The Royals and A’s play again today.

Graveside services for Valrie Medlock of Salem, age 96, will be held at 10:00 this morning at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Salem Long Term Care. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Viola Marshall, age 98, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Sligo Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, National Parkinson’s Association, or New Hope Presbyterian Church of St. Charles.

Funeral services for Frank Wayne Jarvis Jr. of Salem, age 40, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Frank Jarvis Jr.

Visitation for David Oprean of St. James, age 69, will be held Friday from 10:00 to 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Southard Cemetery.

Funeral services for Kenneth Elwood Dunn of Steelville, age 84, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Myers Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Memorial services for Betty Lou Miskell of Salem, age 72, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Margaret Sue Asbridge of Salem, age 50, will be Friday at 2:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until 2:00 on Friday. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Asbridge family.

Funeral services for Fleda Alene Litty of BeeBe, Arkansas, age 100, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Roberts Cemetery.

Funeral services for Patricia Lou Lindgren, age 86, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 12:00 (noon) at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Delber Day Cancer Center.
