The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their tax rate hearing prior to the start of the regular meeting. The operating levy was set at $2.75 per $100 assessed violation and the debt service was set at 45 cents per $100 assessed valuation for a total of $3.20. The board approved the tax rate. Superintendent Stave Carvajal reviewed with the board the work that still needed to be done at the schools including the service line at the junior high cafeteria that will be installed at the end of September. He said the Ag building is still waiting on partitions and cove base. He also stated that the windows were not replaced in the Ag building this year, but that will be considered next year depending upon how much money is left. Carvajal said about 30 roofers will be working on the roof over the next ten days or so to finish that project, and the new scoreboard at the football field has been installed. Carvajal indicated that work on the track has begun and that project should be done in two to three weeks, but it will then take about another 30 days for the track surface to cure before the public can start using it again. Carvajal wanted to thank the local contractors that worked on the school project including Paul Camden Excavating, Kirker Electric, Brown Heating and Cooling, Toman’s Flooring, Dent County Glass and Rommel’s Lock and Alarm. He also wanted to thank the city for the use of their equipment when needed and labor. Assistant Superintendent John McCulloch said that professional days went well with the current staff and 12 new certified staff members. In new business, the board approved the 2012-2013 Annual Secretary of the Board Report, then they approved the official 2013-2014 budget with one change. The change was to pay L.J. Hart for their services from Fund 1 which is the schools’ general revenue fund, instead of paying them from Fund 4 which is the capital improvement fund. That will leave more money in Fund 4 for other school improvements. The board approved the resignations of para-professional Becky Russell, para-professional Savannah Short and Color Guard Coach Alisha White. The board approved the MSBA 2012 administrative procedures, and they approved a new athletic/activity policy that is more stringent that what is required by MSHSAA. Salem R-80 will be evaluating student grades each grading period and have policies addressing deficiencies. The board also approved the sale of the surplus property lunchroom tables to the True Apostolic Church. The board then went into closed session before visiting the campus.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol released their report of an incident that took the life of a 6-year old O’Fallon girl on Sunday, August 11th in Reynolds County at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park. According to the report, Kira Dempsey was swimming in the Black River and became trapped under a log at 3:07 in the afternoon. She was flown by Air Evac to the Iron County Hospital but was pronounced dead by Dr. Henry Konzelman at 5:23. She was not wearing a safety device at the time of the incident.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department reports that on Monday, August 12th, deputies responded to a business on West Highway 32 for a reported death threat. Upon arrival, a 32-year old Salem female stated that a female had called her place of business and threatened to kill her. This incident is believed to be in regards to ongoing litigation involving a recent dog bite incident. Suspect information was developed and as a result, 48-year old Cynthia K. Webb of Salem was arrested on charges of Third Degree Assault and Harassment. Webb was transported to the Dent County Jail where she was fingerprinted and photographed, given a court date and released on summons. The report has been forwarded to the Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review.
The Salem Police Department released reports for the end of July. On Tuesday, July 23rd at 8:08 in the evening, an officer was sent to a residence in the 100 block of North Askins in reference to a dog at large. The investigation revealed that a German Sheppard was running loose and charging at residents in the area. The dog owner was contacted and issued summons to appear in court. On Wednesday, July 24th at 3:38 in the morning a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem male on an active arrest warrant from Maries County. He was released and given a court date after posting bond. On Friday, July 26th at 9:56 in the morning, an officer transported a 48-year old Salem male to the Poplar Bluff Behavioral Health Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. At 10:50 that same morning, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 19-year old St. Louis male for stealing merchandise valued at $3.24. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, July 27th at 11:41 in the evening, an officer was called to the 700 block of East Fourth in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone entered a residence and took a laptop computer and Sony Playstation valued at $900. On Sunday, July 28th at 2:39 in the afternoon a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 54-year old Salem male for driving while revoked. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Missouri Department of Conservation will be hosting a day of hiking opportunities and demonstrations on Saturday August 17th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Weather permitting, staff and volunteers will be offering nature hikes and herb walks on the hour. The programs are free and registration is not required. In addition, volunteers will be utilizing nature's bounty demonstrating how lye soap is made and the youth program Nature Nuts will be offered from 10:00 thru 11:30. Starling Marte’s dropped fly ball in the 9th inning allowed the Cards to tie the game on an Allen Craig single to force extra innings. The in the 14th inning, Jon Jay slid home safely on Adron Chambers' single in the to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the start of a big three-game series at Busch Stadium. St. Louis, which won despite leaving 17 men on base, pulled within two games of the Pirates for first place in the NL Central. Jay finished with four hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, who will play the Pirates again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 6:40.
Christian Yelich delivered the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and the Miami Marlins pulled out a victory over the Kansas City Royals, taking a 1-0 decision that was highlighted by a pitching duel between Jose Fernandez and Bruce Chen. Each starter was lights out for their respective teams, with neither squad able to put a runner in scoring position over the first six innings. Fernandez gave Miami seven innings of three-hit ball and Chen matched that line for Kansas City, with both hurlers fanning six and giving way to bullpens that kept the shutout intact until the 10th inning. The Royals and Marlins play again this afternoon.

Funeral services for Wanda Charlene Thompson of Columbus, Georgia, formerly of Salem, age 83, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Columbus Hospice in Columbus, Georgia.
Funeral services for Marvin Godbey of St. Charles, age 84, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Shoal Creek Cemetery in Steelville with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, American Parkinson’s Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
Funeral mass for Paula Dent formally of Salem, age 82, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday night from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Salem.
