The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that work still continues on the west end of Dent County Road 624 in the Gladden area and crews are still hauling rock to Bunker. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that due to the dry weather very little one-way grading would be done throughout the district. Tune said crews would be patching chip and seal on Dent County Road 319, hauling gravel to the Industrial Park and bush hogging at the Commons to get it ready for the Fall Festival. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a series of meetings Thursday night at MRPC in St. James. Skiles said at the Transportation Advisory Committee has been meeting regularly to prioritize roadway needs in the Meramec River Region area and they will be presenting their recommendations to the State Legislatures and MODOT on September 5th. Those recommendations include four lanes on Highway 63 from Jefferson City to Arkansas, and on Highway 50 from Jefferson City to Union and also paved shoulders on numbered routes. At the MRPC Meeting it was announced that Homeland Security money for this area would be cut in half and re-allocated to more populated areas. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the Tax Levy Hearing would be Monday, August 20th at 10:00. Also at the meeting Commissioner Simpson received an email from Jack Blackwell, Chairman of the Enhanced Enterprise Zone Committee. He was asking the Commission to renew Dean Jones’ membership for five more years.  Simpson made the motion to approve, Tune seconded the motion and all agreed.  Commissioner Simpson also said that Dent County had received three bids for Rural Addressing and the Commission will be discussing those at next Monday’s meeting. Jim Boulware, a member of the Governing Council for the Nutrition Site, stopped by the meeting to ask the Commission about extra funding that was made available for the Nutrition Site, but had been temporarily put on hold. The Commission explained that proper procedures and paper work had to be done before the money could be distributed. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred Sunday evening at 6:35 in Shannon County on Route 19 about 19 miles north of Eminence. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Kawasaki driven by 37-year old Ronald Lashly of Eminence was traveling northbound on highway 19. The Kawasaki crested a hill and swerved to miss a vehicle that was stopped in the roadway. Lashly suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. A passenger, 10-year old Ronald Lashly of Gladden, suffered minor injuries and was taken by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Kawasaki sustained moderate damage and was taken by Tyler Towing.

The Dent County Democrats will hold a meeting tonight at 7:00 at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room on 4th Street, downtown. At the meeting, Jon Hagler from the Jay Nixon for Governor campaign will be the guest speaker. The meeting is open to all interested individuals.

The St. Louis Cardinals had yesterday off as they get ready for their matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at Miller Park. The Cards will play three games in Milwaukee before moving on to Chicago to face the Cubs in a four game set. Tonight’s game begins at 7:15 with the Dugout Show starting at 7:05 on KSMO Radio.

Billy Butler knocked in a pair of runs and his replacement Ross Gload added a two-run triple, as the Kansas City Royals topped the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-2, in the finale of a four-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Odalis Perez (7-11) picked up the win after giving up two runs and eight hits over five innings of work. Kansas City's bullpen took care of the rest, pitching four innings of one-hit ball. Mark Teahen homered for the first time since May 29th --- a span of 250 at- bats -- for the Royals, who earned a series split with Toronto. The Royals will travel to Texas to face the Rangers tonight starting at 7:30.

St. Louis Blues have signed forward D.J. King to a multi-year contract; signed goaltender Jason Bacashihua and defensemen Jeff Woywitka and Matt Walker to one-year deals; and also signed prospects Alex Brooks, Mike Glumac, Charles Linglet and Yan Stastny to one-year contracts.

Salem High School Sports are right around the corner as you can preview the 2007 Salem Tiger Football Team Friday night starting at 6:00 during their scrimmage. Admission is a bottle of water, Gatorade, Powerade, etc. The goal is to collect enough drinks to last the team the entire season

The regular season for Salem Tiger Sports is almost here as the Lady Tiger Softball Team will host Newburg on Monday afternoon at the Salem Freedom Activity Center Field followed by a game with Waynesville on Tuesday also here in Salem. Both games will begin at 4:30.

Funeral services for Denver Schafer of Salem, age 81, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Madelynn Grace Salts, of Rolla, age 1 year 6 months, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Macedonia Cemetery in rural Phelps County.

A funeral mass for Leona Mullen of Steelville, age 97, will be held Wednesday morning at the St. Michaels Church in Steelville. Visitation will be held today from 4:00 to 8:00 with a Prayer service Tuesday night at 7:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Leasburg. Memorials may be made to the St. Michaels Church in Steelville.

Funeral services for Esther R. Leonard, age 84, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 on Wednesday. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Corinth Baptist Church.

Interment service for Retired Staff SGT William W. Harney of Salem, age 68, will be held Friday at 1:15 at the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the Crossville Baptist Church and all the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Nellie Mae Galt of Whittier CA, formerly of Cherryville, age 87, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Center Ridge Pentecostal Church in Davisville. Visitation will be Friday 4:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Martin Cemetery in Cherryville.

Memorial services for Mark Donald Isaak of Viburnum, age 49, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Emmanuel Methodist Church in Viburnum. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Emmanuel Methodist Church of Viburnum or charity of choice.
