An accident occurred at 12:20 Friday afternoon in Shannon County on Highway K about seven miles from Jadwin. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Harley Davidson driven by 55-year old Jaxon Waldrip of Rolla was traveling southbound on Highway K. The Harley struck some loose gravel on a curve, lost control and ran off the right side, coming to rest in the ditch. Waldrip suffered moderate injuries and taken by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. A passenger, 58-year old Denise Waldrip suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial Hospital by the Salem ambulance. The Harley sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 5:30 Friday evening in Reynolds County on Highway 72 about eight miles east of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 27-year old William Monday of Bunker, traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, traveled off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree. William Monday and an occupant, 29-year old Erin Monday of Bunker, suffered moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. They were both wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Hill’s Towing of Ellington.

An accident occurred on Friday at 8:00 in the evening in Texas County on Slaughter Road about 5 miles North of Boiling Springs. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by 32 year-old Dustin Benson of Licking lost control of his vehicle in a curve, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Benson suffered moderate injuries while occupants 14 year-old Quentin Benson, 12 year-old Jordan Benson and 8 year-old Ean Benson suffered minor injuries. All were transported by ambulance to the Texas County Memorial Hospital. The Ford sustained extensive damage and was towed by Jay’s Automotive of Houston.

An accident occurred on Saturday at 2:15 in the morning in Phelps County on County Road 8170 about 5 miles West of Rolla. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Ford F250 Pickup driven by 20 year-old Jonathan Mudd of Rolla, traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. A passenger, 20-year old Seth Gideon of Rolla, suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the Phelps County Ambulance. The Ford sustained extensive damage and was towed by C&C Towing.

The 110th Missouri State Fair kicked off its “Then and WOW” celebration with the annual Opening Day Parade. The 73-entry procession was led by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, followed by color guards from the Sedalia VFW, Missouri Sons of the American Revolution and the Smith Cotton JROTC, also of Sedalia. The Smith-Cotton Tiger Pride Marching Band, under the direction of Salem High School graduate Grant Maledy, took second place. Grant is the son of former Salem R-80 Superintendent Cindy Maledy.

On Tuesday, Senator Claire McCaskill will conclude the second day of her statewide “Fighting for our Farmers” Barnstorm by visiting the Wurdack Farm in Cook Station to meet with voters and discuss the work she has done to protect cattlemen and livestock producers from the hardships this summer’s extreme drought has caused. This stop is a part of Day Two on Claire’s six-day statewide “Fighting for Our Farmers” Barnstorm that will take her to rural communities in all four corners of the State of Missouri. Again that will be Tuesday, August 14th at the Wurdack Farm located at 164 Bales Road in Cook Station beginning at 2:00 pm.

The 12th Tiger Club is sponsoring a Football Parade to be held on Friday, August 24th. This will be the first home football game for the Salem Football Tigers. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade and show their Tiger Pride and Spirit. Floats and vehicles should line up around 5:30 pm, between the City of Salem Administration Building and the East Salem Hill. The parade will take off around 6:00 pm and will arrive at the Salem High School Football Stadium before the beginning at the game. Juan Pierre beat out an infield hit in the bottom of the 11th inning and the Philadelphia Phillies escaped with an 8-7 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Matt Carpenter clubbed four hits and knocked in three runs, while Jon Jay went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI for the Cardinals, who have lost eight of their last 11 series against Philadelphia. Starter Lance Lynn allowed four runs on four hits over five innings. The Cardinals have the day off.

The St. Louis Cardinals have traded infielder Tyler Greene to the Houston Astros in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To fill the roster spot, the Cards purchased the contract of infielder Ryan Jackson from Triple-A Memphis.

Manny Machado homered for the third time in four games as the Orioles concluded a four-game set against Kansas City with a 5-3 win on Sunday. Bruce Chen (8-10), who received a loss for the fourth time in his last five decisions, gave up four runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He added five strikeouts. Mike Moustakas homered for the Royals, who have lost two out of three on the heels of a three-game win streak. The Royals have the day off.

Andrew Luck threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns in his debut and the Indianapolis Colts stomped the St. Louis Rams, 38-3, in the preseason opener for both teams at Lucas Oil Stadium. Sam Bradford threw for 57 yards on 7-of-9 passing in his first game under the Rams' new head coach Jeff Fisher. Rookie Isaiah Pead led St. Louis in rushing with 33 yards. Steven Jackson had four rushes for 17 yards in limited action. The Rams and Chiefs play on Saturday.

Matt Cassel and the Chiefs' first-team offense came out strong and Kansas City held on for a 27-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in preseason action on Friday. Over two series, Cassel completed 5-of-6 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown in his first game playing under new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Jamaal Charles carried the ball three times for 12 yards in his first game since he tore his ACL year.

The U.S. men’s and women’s basketball teams each took home gold medals as the 2012 Summer Olympics wrapped things up in London over the weekend. The U.S.A. finished with 46 gold, 29 silver, and 29 bronze medals.

Funeral services for Harold Eugene White of Salem, age 78, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Blackwell Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Phelps County Regional Home Care.

Funeral services for Everett Fred Schoen of Salem, age 84, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Weese Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Schoen family.

Graveside services for Robert L. Bartlett of St. Petersburg, Florida, age 94, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Steelville Cemetery with Military Honors. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Memorial services for Dona C. Smith of Salem, age 69, will be held Saturday at the home of Phillip Christ on Doss Road. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
