Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto was suspended seven games by Major League Baseball for his role in the August 10th benches-clearing melee with the St. Louis Cardinals. Managers Dusty Baker of Cincinnati and Tony La Russa of St. Louis were also suspended two games apiece. The suspensions, pending appeal, go into affect today. Four other players were fined but not suspended Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter and catcher Yadier Molina, and Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips and relief pitcher Russ Springer. The Cardinals had the day off yesterday, but head home to start a three game series against the Chicago Cubs starting tonight at 6:55 on KSMO.
CC Sabathia earned his AL-leading 15th win with 8 2/3 solid innings, as the New York Yankees held on to beat the Kansas City Royals, 4-3, in the first of four games at Kauffman Stadium. Willie Bloomquist drove in two runs, while Mike Aviles had two hits and an RBI for the Royals, losers in five straight. Bruce Chen (7-6) allowed three runs, eight hits and two walks in a five-plus inning start to receive the loss. The Royals and Yankees will play again tonight.
Royals’ outfielder Gregor Blanco left Thursday night's game after four innings because of heat exhaustion and dehydration. He is expected to be ready for tonight's game.
Missouri State guard/forward Keith Pickens is expected to miss the upcoming season following knee surgery. Pickens ruptured his left patellar tendon during off-season conditioning last week. Surgery to repair the damage was successful, but recovery time for this type of injury is roughly 12 months. As a true freshman, the St. Louis native averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 16.5 minutes per game over 33 contests.
