US Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond will visit Dent County today to talk to local officials about jump-starting a new clean energy industry that will provide a critical source of jobs and clean energy for rural Missouri. Bond will also tour local forestry areas that could be used in potential biomass production. US Senator Kit Bond, Salem Mayor Gary Brown, Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles, Forest Supervisor David Whittekiend and Executive Director of Missouri Forest Products Association Steve Jarvis will all meet this morning at the National Forest Service Office located at 1301 South Main Street in Salem beginning at 9:00.

At the Dent County Commissioners meeting held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse, Al and Dennis Hayman were in attendance to discuss replacing the Trail of Tears Historical Marker sign on Highway 19 North on what appears to be county property between the old railroad right-of-way and Highway 19. Dennis Hayman has applied for a grant from the Tourism Tax Committee to replace the signs and if granted, wanted permission from the county to change the sign. The commissioners were not aware of that being county property and will look into it for their own knowledge, but had no objections to Hayman changing out the sign at the Historical Marker. District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell was not in attendance so road supervisor Rusty Chamberlain gave the report. He said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5016, 5615, 6495 and 6550. He also said that gravel would be hauled from the creek bed. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 2090, 3120, 3180, and 4280. He said workers would continue to do ditch work, grading and rebuilding parts of Dent County Road 2250. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting and MRPC meeting Thursday night. The Commissioners then discussed the gazebo in the front of the courthouse and decided to purchase the one that is currently there for $4,400 from Classic Buildings. At the last meeting, the commissioners agreed to accept the bid from Roberts-Judson Company for the metal for the road and bridge shed for $5,887.41. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Fall Festival continues through Saturday at the Dent County Commons on Highway 72. Today, the livestock judging will be held throughout the day. The Carnival rides in the midway will start at 4:00 and it is wristband night. Also starting at 4:00 on stage will be the microphone/karaoke. Then at 7:30 will be the Dual Demolition Derby with $2,900 in prize money in the Mud Pit and The Lost Outlaw Band will be performing in the Arena starting at 10:00 pm. On Saturday starting at 10:00 in the morning, the ATV Drag Races and Rodeo will be in the Mud PIT. The Carnival rides will start at 1:00 in the Midway, and the Livestock Auction will be in the Livestock Barn beginning at 2:00 that can be heard live on KSMO Radio. There will the open microphone/karaoke on the Youth Building Patio at 4:00. That evening at 6:00 on Stage will be Ken Roberts with a Conway Twitty Tribute followed by Rich Vickers and the TLC Show Band with an Elvis Extravaganza. The Mini Sprintcar Races presented by Devon Abney’s Longhorn Raceway will be in the Mud Pit at 7:30 and the Ranch Hand & Ranch Horse Rodeo, sanctioned by G.A.B.R.A., will be in the Arena beginning 8:00 pm.
