The 81st Annual Dent County Fall Festival began yesterday with the judging of exhibits and submissions. In the booth judging, Town and Country Bank received First Place in the Commercial Division with Intercounty Electric taking Second Place. In the Non-Commercial Division, the Girl Scouts took First Place with the Constitutional Party taking Second Place. In the Best of Show category, 4-H winners included Kendra Case for her smoked country ham, David Bippes with his display case, Shayelee Harrison for her Lady Bug Cake and Julia Farthing for her painting. Other Best of Show category winners included Tracey Wood in Bakery and Pastry for her gooey butter cake, Geneva Smith in Canned Fruits and Vegetables for her tomatoes, Ron Hedrick in Arts and Crafts for his woodworking, Harley Ferguson in Horticulture for his field pumpkin, and Joann Pyles in Home Economics for her quilt. In the pie and pastry auction held at the exhibition building, a total of $1,827 was raised. The top two selling items were the Best of Show gooey butter cake from Tracey Wood that sold to the Bank of Salem for $150, while Julie Salyer’s Fresh Pecan Pie captured $140 from Carl Eichenberger.

Pageants for Miss Dent County, Jr. Miss Dent County, Dent County Princess, Little Mister and Miss Dent County, and the Dent County Baby Contest will all be held tonight during the 81st Dent County Fall Festival starting at 6:00 pm at the Commons in the Livestock exhibition barn. Contestants vying for Miss Dent County are Samantha Riley, Kayce Webber, Jessey Gouldsmith and Shala Plank. Jr. Miss Dent County contestants are Sierra Hagler, Candice Whitlock, Hannah Jadwin, Makayla Farr and Lydia Whitaker. Dent County Princess contestants are Trista Heavin, Makenna Farrar and Kirsten Golden. Cans are still setup at the Town and Country Bank main location and also at the Bank of Salem on 4th Street for contestants in the Little Miss, Little Mister and Baby contests. Alicyn Warden and Kayla Howard are running for Little Miss Dent County; and John Michael Harvey Kimrey and Paul Jerry Scott Kimrey are running for Little Mister Dent County. Vying in the Dent County Baby contest are Colby Welch, Sydney Warden, Brody Phillip Hasten, Paul Jerry Scott Kimrey, Ava JoAnn Plank and Bailey Howard. Tonight will also be Wrist Band Night as the bands will be sold for $14.00 this evening starting at 6:00. Admission at the gate will be $2.00 for those 12 and up. The exhibition building will be open today starting at 4:00.

To ensure the safety of its employees, The Doe Run Company actively trains and tests the skills of its mine rescue teams throughout the year and from July 21st through 23rd, Doe Run’s Gray Team competed in the 2009 Metal/Nonmetal Mine Rescue Contest in Idaho Springs, Colorado. In addition to its first place win, the Gray Team won second place in the Mine Field Problem test, which takes place in a simulated mine using the same equipment employed in an actual underground mine. Garry Moore, Jr., a Gray Team member from the Sweetwater Mine, took first place in the BG4 Competition and Ken Wood, a member of the surface maintenance crew from the Fletcher Mine, took third place in the Gas Bench Contest. Both competition assess crucial skills used in underground mine rescue. The other Gray Team members are; Wayne Marlin, Randal Hill, William Johnston, Carl Mann, Brad Beck, Charlie Walker and Bill Johnston, and the team trainers are Shawn Pratt and Dan King. A smaller team made up of Pratt, Mann, Moore, Beck and Denny Dickerson also entered the Edgar Mine Challenge and they captured an impressive first place.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a public tax rate hearing, which will be held during the Board of Alderman meeting to be held on Monday, August 17th in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington, at which time citizens may be heard on the property tax rate proposed to be set by the City of Salem of $0.624 per $100 valuation. The tax rate shall be set to produce the revenue, which the budget for the fiscal year beginning at July 1, 2009 shows to be required from the property tax. The public tax rate hearing is open to the public.

The South Central Specialty Crop Growers Association Workshop will be held on Thursday, August 20th at My Place Restaurant in Salem. These workshops are for specialty crop growers and those interested in becoming specialty crop growers. Specialty crops cover a broad range of products including vegetables, fruits and cut flowers. Registration will begin at 8:30 am followed by an introduction to the South Central Region Specialty Crop Growers Association. At 10:00 Andy Read University of Missouri Extension will talk about “Getting the Most Out of Your Product” with marketing strategies. At 11:00 Dr. Will McClain from the University of Missouri Extension will discuss “Managing Missouri Soils and Soil Fertility” and lunch be provided at noon. There is no charge for the workshop and lunch, but pre-registration is required. To register or for more information contact the Dent County Extension Center at 729-3196.

Albert Pujols went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and scored twice to lead the St. Louis Cardinals past the Cincinnati Reds, 5-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set from Busch Stadium. Pujols homered for the second straight night and recorded his MLB-best 38th homer of the 2009 campaign. Matt Holliday was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Cardinals. Chris Carpenter (12-3) got the win after going seven frames and giving up two runs on eight hits with a season-high tying 10 punchouts. He recorded his seventh straight winning decision. Carpenter has defeated the Reds three times in three starts this year, allowing just four runs in 23 innings. Ryan Franklin tossed a scoreless ninth to get his 28th save of the year.  The Cardinals will have the day off today before starting a three game series with San Diego Friday night.

Joe Crede went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run and Francisco Liriano tossed a season-high seven innings of one-run ball, as the Minnesota Twins handled the Kansas City Royals, 7-1, in the middle installment of a three-game series at the Metrodome. Brian Bannister (7-9) got rocked in six frames, giving up seven runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk to take the loss for Kansas City. The Royals used Ryan Bloomquist's homer in the top of the first inning to take the early edge, but it was all Minnesota from there. The Royals and Twins wrap up their series tonight in Minneapolis.

Kansas City granted pitcher Sidney Ponson his unconditional release waivers, making him a free agent.

Funeral services for Eugene “Gene” Hanks of Hill City, Kansas, formerly of Steelville, age 73, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Callaway Memorial Gardens at 2:00 in Fulton.

Funeral services for Daniel Michael Cahill of Salem, age 72, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Scared Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be held Friday night from 5:00 to 8:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
