The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported the sales tax received this month came in at $52,891.68 which was almost $3,000 more than the receipts received last August. For the year-to-date figures, the sales tax received stands at $541,064.40 and that figure shows an 11% increase over last year. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated work crews would be out checking for washouts and downed limbs over county roads. He did say that one crew would already be cutting blow down on Dent County Road 6350. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said he had a crew called on Sunday to take care of trees that were down and across the road. He stated brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3240 and 4280, and workers would be checking for washouts and other downed trees. He also mentioned that a work crew would also be checking signs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a SACBA meeting Monday night. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to let voters know the last day to register to vote in the General Election in November will be October 8th. She is also requesting voters to make sure that you have the correct address when you go to vote. If you have moved, please call her office at your earliest convenience to change your address. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse at 9:00 and it is open to the public.

There will be a FREE back to school vaccination clinic held today from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Dent County Health Center, located at 601 South McArthur in Salem. Tdap, HPV, and Meningitis Vaccines for ANY student ages 11-18 and ANY college student ages 19-26. All participants must bring their shot record. For more information, call 729-3016.

"Deciding which military unit to join in the Civil War was a hard decision for the Men of South Centeral Missouri" will be the topic for the August Dinner Speaker Series, presented by the Dent County Historical Society tonight, at the Bank of Salem meeting room after dinner in the Salem Pizza Inn meeting room. The dinner starts at 5:00, and the presentation starts at 6:00. John Harris will give the power point presentation on being a Confederate Soldier from South Central Missouri and discuss the decisions that these men had to make. City of Salem Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash wants the public to know that since Salem R-80 schools will not be open until next Monday, the 18th, he has indicated that Salem swimming pool will remain OPEN through this Friday. He does recommend that any parents who are planning to bring their children to the pool to please call before you bring the children and that number is 729-6228.

The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Monday, August 4th at 2:59 in the morning, an officer observed two suspicious individuals that appeared intoxicated walking roadside on Highway 32 West. After contacting the two, it was discovered that a 26-year old Salem female was in possession of methamphetamine. She was placed under arrest and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that afternoon at 4:37, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of South Jackson in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that a 25-year old Salem male had broke the side mirror glass on a green 2006 Jeep Liberty. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. A little later that afternoon at 5:10, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1200 block of South Hickory in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered a residence and took a lockbox and contents, valued at $463. That evening at 7:48, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of West Fifth Street in reference to someone threatening a juvenile. That investigation led to the arrest of a 45-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, August 5th at 9:44 in the evening, an officer transported a 35-year old Newburg female from Phelps County Jail to Dent County Jail in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. On Wednesday, August 6th at 10:01 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to Casey's General Store on Macarthur in reference to a theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that the driver of a maroon Ford Focus pumped $6.01 in fuel and left without paying. The City of Salem Fall Youth Soccer & Youth Flag Football programs are just around the corner. Fall Youth Soccer will be for children age 4-12 and Youth Flag Football will be for children in 3rd thru 6th grades. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby on Thursday, August 14th and Friday, August 15th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and on Saturday, August 16th from 9:00 am to 12:00 (noon) at the Salem Community Center located at 1200 West Rolla Road. Final sign-ups will be held Thursday, August 21st and Friday, August 22nd from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The cost for the Fall Youth Soccer and Youth Flag Football is $20 per child. The 12th Annual Football Parade will be held on Friday, August 29th. Groups can line up starting at 5:30 on the East Salem Hill and the parade will begin at 6:00. All businesses, clubs, youth groups, etc are welcome to attend. For more information, call Stephanie Floyd at 247-1441.

Giancarlo Stanton smacked a pair of homers and the Miami Marlins defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game set. Matt Holliday whacked a pair of doubles among his four hits to go with an RBI and scored a run and Jon Jay smashed a two-run blast for the Cardinals, who have dropped four of their last six games. Shelby Miller (8-9) surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks over five frames to garner the loss. The Cardinals and Marlins play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO starting at 5:35.

Alcides Escobar singled in Nori Aoki with the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning and the Kansas City Royals moved into first place in the AL Central with a 3-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics. The Royals, winners of eight in a row, are in first place by themselves this late in a season for the first time since August 29th, 2003. They moved a half-game ahead of Detroit. The Royals and A’s play again tonight.

The Minnesota Twins traded outfielder Josh Willingham to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for minor league pitcher Jason Adam on Monday. The 35-year-old Willingham hit .210 with 12 homers and 34 RBI in 68 games for the Twins this season.

Funeral services for Ronnie McNail of Viburnum, age 54, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Smith Cemetery in Oates. Memorials may be made to the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker for expenses.

Graveside services for Valrie Medlock of Salem, age 96, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Long Term Care. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Viola Marshall, age 98, will be held at 11:00 Thursday morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Sligo Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, National Parkinson’s Association, or New Hope Presbyterian Church of St. Charles.

Funeral services for Frank Wayne Jarvis Jr. of Salem, age 40, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Frank Jarvis Jr.

Visitation for David Oprean of St. James, age 69, will be held Friday from 10:00 to 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Southard Cemetery.

Funeral services for Kenneth Elwood Dunn of Steelville, age 84, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Myers Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Fleda Alene Litty of BeeBe, Arkansas, age 100, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Roberts Cemetery.

Memorial services for Betty Lou Miskell of Salem, age 72, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 until service time. There will be no interment.

Funeral services for Patricia Lou Lindgren, age 86, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 12:00 (noon) at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Delber Day Cancer Center.
