The City of Salem welcomed 11-year old Daylen Harrison Sunday afternoon with a police escort and gathering downtown after his amazing performance at the World Dwarf Games in East Lansing, Michigan at Michigan Stete University over the last week. Harrison won eight Gold medals, a Silver medal and a Bronze medal in the events he participated including basketball, soccer, boccia, badminton, and track and field. Some of the gold medals earned by Harrison were in the 40- meter dash, 60-meter dash, the 4 by 40-meter relay, and he also took gold in singles and doubles in badminton. Congratulations Daylen!!!!

On Thursday, August 8th, deputies from the Dent County Sheriff's Office with assistance from the Salem Police Department, executed a search warrant at a residence located at 19058 Highway C in Lenox, MO. As a result of the search, officers discovered numerous plastic baggies that contained a crystalline substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine. They also found a metal plate that appeared to be used in the processing of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia that field tested positive for heroin. Authorities also located a Chevrolet truck on the property that had been reported stolen from Independence, Missouri. Arrested at the scene were Jackie Hobson and Trenton Stacy from Lenox, Henry Fann of Rolla and Kristen Bettigrew from Salem. All four were charged with a Class C Felony for Possession of a Controlled Substance except for 35 grams or less of Marijuana. Fann was also charged with a Class D Felony for the Unlawful Use of Drug Paraphernalia-Amphetamine/Methamphetamine and a Class C Felony for Receiving Stolen Property and was being held on a $18,000 cash only bond in the Dent County Jail. Hobson, who was also charged with the Class C Felony of Receiving Stolen Property, was being held in the Dent County Jail on a $14,000 cash only bond. Stacy and Bettigrew are being held in the Dent County Jail on a $7,000 cash only bond on the single felony charge.

An accident happened Saturday night in Crawford County on Highway 19 at McCormick Road. According to the highway patrol report, a 2011 Jeep Liberty driven northbound by 27-year old Jared Albrecht of Columbia, Illinois, crossed the centerline and struck a 2000 Chrysler Sebring driven southbound by 25-year old Nicole Carrick of Steelville. After striking the Sebring, the Jeep Liberty began to rotate and then struck a 2000 Harley Davidson Motorcycle driven southbound by 52-year old Nelson Carter of Cuba, and also struck a 2011 Nissan Altima driven southbound by 38-year old Jeffrey Buckner of Steelville. All four vehicles came to a rest in the roadway. A passenger on the motorcycle, 59-year old Carol Carter of Cuba, suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted from the scene by Arch Helicopter and taken to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur. Nelson Carter suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by the North Crawford County Ambulance. Jared Albrecht suffered minor injuries was also taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by the North Crawford County Ambulance. Also suffering minor injuries was Jeffery Buckner and three passengers in the Altima: 12-year old Chynell Buckner and nine-year old Jasmine Buckner, both of Steelville who were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance; and 32-year old Steve Cooley of St. Clair who was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by ambulance. Nicole Carrick also suffered minor injuries and was taken by the Steelville Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. All the vehicles were totaled and everyone involved in the accident was wearing safety restraints.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a tax rate hearing on Tuesday, August 13th beginning at 5:15. After the tax rate hearing the Board will conduct their regular August meeting. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal will update the Board on Professional Development Days, the MSBA fall meeting and annual conference and give an annual progress report. In new business the Board will approve the 2012-2013 annual Secretary of the Board Report (ASBR), the 2013 tax rate and official 2013-2014 budget. The Board will then address resignations and then consider the MSBA 2013C administrative procedures. In old business the Board will approve bids for surplus property. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The tax rate hearing and regular meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran, Allen Craig and Matt Holliday combined for nine hits and five runs to lead St. Louis to an 8-4 win against the Chicago Cubs and avoid a three-game sweep. Carpenter and Craig stood out in particular. Carpenter went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI and Craig went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Beltran did have to leave the game after five innings due to a right foot contusion, but finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.The Cardinals gave Joe Kelly an early lead, but after he allowed four runs, three earned, in 5 1/3 innings, he received a no decision. Randy Choate (2-1) got the win after recording the last out in the sixth. The Cardinals have the day off.

Alex Gordon went 3-for-4 with a home run and James Shields picked up his first win at home in over three months as the Kansas City Royals claimed a four-game series victory against the Boston Red Sox with Sunday's 4-3 win. Greg Holland shut down the AL East-leading Red Sox in order in the ninth to the enjoyment of the crowd at Kauffman Stadium, who have seen the Royals capture a scintillating 16 of their last 19 games and seven consecutive series victories. Shields (7-8), picking up his first home win since April 30, fired seven innings while allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and three walks. Gordon finished with a pair of RBI, with David Lough and Jarrod Dyson also each knocking in a run for Kansas City. The Royals will start a three-game series with the Miami Marlins tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Rainey Francis Callahan of Edgar Springs, age 79, will be held this morning at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Poca Hollow Cemetery near Fremont, MO. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Memorial services for Jimmy D. Martin of Salem, age 54, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bridgeton. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Erin Johnson of Grand Junction, Colorado, formerly of Salem, age 30, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Johnson family for Kamerin Johnson.

Funeral services for Henry O. Roberts of Salem, age 87, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association.

Funeral services for Wanda Charlene Thompson of Columbus, Georgia, formerly of Salem, age 83, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Columbus Hospice in Columbus, Georgia
