The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse without Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles who was not in attendance as he was in Jefferson City at County Commission Association meeting of Missouri meeting. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell acted as Presiding Commissioner for the meeting. Red Cummings was in attendance and told the commission that three of the four pipes on Dent County Road 3210 were clogged and have been for some time at the low water bridge creating a slew where the water backs up. He went on to say that every time it rains just a little, the water starts to flow over the bridge. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said the county is aware of the problem and have been trying to figure out the best way unclog the other pipes, be it by ramming some thing through the pipe or other means. Purcell said that they have had some success ramming about a 30-foot long tree trunk through some jammed pipes and Larson said that they talked about doing that, but haven’t decided yet if that is the best way to go. Larson did say they planned on getting that job done soon during the dry season before the rainy season begins. In the road report, Purcell reported that in District One, grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5170, 5220, 6010 and 6580; and that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4150, 4155 and 6300. Purcell stated that two men were also going to be helping with the county shed renovation on the roof project. In District Two, Commissioner Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3190 and 3220, with materials being added and grading done on Dent County Road 5240. Larson went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2380. Attorney Brook Kenagy was in attendance representing Father James Fender about a piece of the old railroad right-of-way that is on his property in Crawford County along Route M that is currently owned by Dent County. He is looking for a Quit-Claim Deed to have the property deeded back to Father Fender, but Purcell and Larson both agreed that Presiding Commissioner Skiles needed to be in attendance to review the request before a vote is taken. At the last meeting, Denny Pogue from the Bank of Salem brought in the lease agreements to be signed by the commission for the purchase of the backhoe. Thomas Haines with the National Forest Service came in to discuss the contract on the Swiney Bridge project with the commissioners. Wayne Becker also came in about getting lease agreement bids for the Sheriff’s Department for two vehicles. Those bids will be opened on August 18^th. Matt Floyd from Fabick came in to pick up the check for the backhoe and also had the commissioners sign the Equipment Purchase order. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday, August 15ty at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

At the Dent County Fall Festival at the Commons, livestock shows will be the main event today starting with the hog show at 7:30, the sheep and goat show at 1:30, the small animal show at 3:00 and the beef and dairy show at 4:00. The Carnival will start at 6:00 and go to 10:00, weather permitting. Wristbands will be available for $15. On Saturday, the Carnival will be open from 1:00 until 10:00, the Livestock Auction will be held at 2:00 and Michael Conners and the Country Rocker Band will play at 7:00 on the main stage. Admission to the Commons is $2.00 for adults and kids 12 and under are free except for after 5:00 on Saturday when the cost of admission will be $5.00 for adults.

Did you ever want to try camping, but didn’t have the gear or were uncomfortable with the idea?  Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host a free overnight camping clinic at Pulltite Group Site #2 on Saturday, August 13^th. The clinic is designed for beginning campers to try out camping with experienced park staff that can help ease worries and provide camping tips. Tents will be provided. Participants will need to bring their own food, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, flashlights, personal items, and anything else needed for a night of camping. Suggested arrival time is 3:00 pm with activities beginning at 4:30 pm. Ranger-led sessions on Leave No Trace principles, River Ecology, and Campfire 101 will be presented.  Starting at 8:00 p.m., campers will gather round a roaring campfire for s’mores, stories, and songs. Sessions are limited to 20 participants and advanced reservations are required. Pulltite Campground is located at the end of EE Highway.  From Salem, Missouri, take State Route 19 South for 32 miles and turn right onto EE Highway. Reservations can be made in by calling the Round Spring Visitor Center at 573-858-3297 ext. 25.  The Round Spring Visitor Center is open from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm daily.

The Salem Tiger Football Teams and the 12^th Tiger Club would like to invite the public to a scrimmage tonight at 6:00 at the Salem High School Football Field. Admission to the game will be bottles of Gatorade or water. These will be given to the players after the away games.

The 12^th Tiger Club Parent meeting will be held with Coach Schuchardt at 6:00 tonight. Following the meeting, there will be a 12^th Tiger Club meeting. For more information about the 12^th Tiger Club or about the meeting tonight, please contact Stephanie Floyd at 247-1441.

Chris Carpenter pitched eight strong innings and Albert Pujols went 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBI as the Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-2, to avoid a three-game sweep. Rafael Furcal and Pujols both went deep in the first inning after the Brewers were spotted a 2-0 lead. Lance Berkman singled in Jon Jay with the go-ahead run in the third, as St. Louis moved within four games of the first-place Brewers in the NL Central. Carpenter (8-8) gave up 10 hits and won for the seventh time in his last eight decisions. Fernando Salas fanned two batters in the ninth inning to notch his 22nd save. The Cards will host the Colorado Rockies this weekend starting tonight at 6:40 on KSMO.

St. Louis agreed to terms with veteran left-handed pitcher Arthur Rhodes on Thursday. Rhodes, who was put on waivers Monday by the Texas Rangers, is expected to join the Cardinals tonight.

Jeff Niemann was solid through 6 1/3 frames and Ben Zobrist went 2-for-3 with two RBI, as the Tampa Bay Rays earned a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals to complete a four-game sweep. Danny Duffy (3-6) allowed three runs on five hits over seven frames to suffer the loss. Melky Cabrera went 3-for-5 and Eric Hosmer had an RBI for the Royals, losers of six of their last seven. The Royals will be in Chicago to face the White Sox this weekend.

Funeral services for Robert F. Eaves of Overland Mo., age 87, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will in the Enke Cemetery in Lenox with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for James J. Moeslein of St. James, age 71, will be held Sunday at 9:30 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be held Saturday night from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the St. Charles Memorial Cemetery on Sunday at 2:00. Memorials may be made to the St. Johns Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
