The Dent County Fall Festival got underway Wednesday with the judging of the exhibits at the Youth Building. The Best of Show Winners were Josephine Winslow for Home Economics, Patrisha Decker for Bakery and Pastry, Amy Houser for Canned Fruits and Vegetables, Barbara Walters for Floriculture, Claudia Sullivan for Arts and Crafts and John Rostron for Horticulture. In the Best of Show for 4-H members, winners included Olivia Erway for her scrapbook, David Bipps for his multi-purpose cabinet and Caitlin Bipps for her snowflake quilt. The Champion Country Cured Ham Award went to Shelby Martin and the Reserve Champion Award went to Olivia Elliot. The booth winners this year in the Youth Building include Intercounty Electric as they took First Place followed by Town and Country Bank who captured Second Place. The non-commercial winner went to the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Wednesday night at the Dent County Fall Festival, a large crowd gathered at the main stage for the Fall Festival Pageants. The first contest was the Dent County Baby Contest and there were 15 contestants. The Baby Girl winner was Madilyn Berry while the Baby Boy winner was Jonathan Stites. The next contest was the Little Mr. and Miss Dent County contest that featured eight entries. The 2010 Little Miss Dent County went to Memphis Roderman while the Little Mr. Dent County went to Cameron Seay. The Dent County Princess Contest was also held for girls 5-10 years of age and that winner was Alexus Woolman from the four contestants. The crowd had to wait for the judges to arrive that delayed the program about 45 minutes before the Jr. Miss Dent County Pageant. Twelve girls entered the competition with Marissa Blaylock being voted Miss Congeniality, Makenna Farrar capturing the First Runner-Up before Elaina Goff was crowned the 2010 Jr. Miss Dent County. In the Miss Dent County Pageant, seven girls were vying for the title of Miss Dent County and that award went to Ashley Crocker. The First Runner-Up went to Sierra Hagler and the Miss Congeniality Award was presented to Kala Trolinger. Congratulations to all those who participated and the winners all received a nice array of prizes as well as a check from the Dent County Fair Board of Directors.

An accident occurred at 11:30 Tuesday night in Dent County that took the life a West Plains woman. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Ford E-450 U-Haul Rental Truck driven by 53-year old Sharon Kerrigan of West Plains was traveling westbound on Highway 32 about 14 miles west of Salem. The accident occurred as the truck went off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence and then struck a tree. Dent County Deputy Coroner Eddie Wilson pronounced Kerrigan dead at the scene. The U-Haul truck was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Police Department released their report involving a disorderly conduct, traffic violation, and domestic assault. On August 4^th at 2:30 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 1800 block of South Oak Street in reference to an intoxicated woman. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 23-year-old Salem woman for disorderly conduct and property damage. She was issued a summons to appear in court on the charges and was released to a family member. Later that night at 10:00 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 42-year-old Salem man for driving while intoxicated, driving while having his license suspended, a stop sign violation, and possession of marijuana. He was issued a summons to appear in court on all charges and was released to a family member. On August 5^th at 8:00 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East Hawkins Street in reference to a domestic assault. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Salem man for a domestic assault. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released.

Day two of the Dent County Fall Festival at the Dent County Commons located on Highway 72 will have the carnival rides starting in the midway at 4:00 and it is wristband night. The open microphone/karaoke will also start at 4:00 at the Youth Building Patio. The Andrew Stratman/Heaven acoustic guitar band will be performing on Stage at 7:00 and The Silver Nickle Shooters – mounted shooting exhibition will be in the Arena starting at 7:30. Colby Rasmus belted a grand slam in support of Adam Wainwright's seven scoreless innings as St. Louis downed Cincinnati, 6-1, to complete a three-game sweep and move into sole possession of first place in the National League Central. Wainwright (17-6) allowed just two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four for the Cardinals. Skip Schumaker had three hits and drove in a run and Jon Jay added a pair of hits and a run scored for St. Louis, which has won five of its last six contests. They will have the day off today.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed pitcher Jeff Suppan on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 1; purchased the contract of catcher Steven Hill from Springfield (Texas).

Bobby Abreu hit a game-winning home run with one out in the 10th inning, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-1 victory and a three-game sweep over the Kansas City Royals. Yuniesky Betancourt homered for the Royals. Zack Greinke lasted eight frames yielding one run, six hits and a walk while striking out six. Jesse Chavez (1-1) took the loss for giving up Abreu's homer. The Royals will host the New York Yankees tonight.

Memorial services for Gloria Whitesell of St. James, age 66, will be held on tonight at 6:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 5:30 until service time.

Funeral services for Maudie L. McDowell of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Rolla & St. James, age 91, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery.

Memorial services for Milton Frank Bradley of Salem, age 68, will be held Friday at 12:00 (noon) at the United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 10:30 until time for the service. Memorials are suggested to the UMC Landscape Fund. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Noah Turnbough of Viburnum, age 92, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 2:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Sellers Cemetery in Davisville. Memorials may be given to the Sellers Cemetery.

Funeral services for Cecil Cummins of Cranston, RI, formerly of Steelville, age 95, will be Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Louise Marlin of Salem, age 71, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Henry John Scott of Rolla, age 64, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter.
