An accident occurred at 4:15 Tuesday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 about two miles west of Boss. According to the highway patrol report, a 1985 Chevrolet pickup driven by 26- year old Delbert Dyer of Boss was forced off the right side of the roadway, into a ditch, and overturned several times. An occupant in the pickup, 29-year old Tiffany Briden of Boss, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted by Air Evac to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield. She was seven months pregnant. Another occupant in the pickup, 10 year-old Brandon Clark of Boss, suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted by Lifeline to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield. Brandon Clark was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet pickup was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing to the owner’s residence.

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Saturday, August 8^th at 8:30 p.m. an officer was detailed to 1400 Highway 32 West to the Ranch Motel in reference to an intoxicated person. The report led to the arrest of a 37-year old Joplin man for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was incarcerated. On Sunday, August 9^th at 8:15 pm, the Salem dispatch received a complaint of a vehicle driving around town in a careless manner. The caller provided a description of the vehicle. Officers located the vehicle, and an investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem man for driving while intoxicated, possession of synthetic narcotics and supplying intoxicants to a minor. He was issued a summons on the charge of driving while intoxicated and supplying intoxicants to a minor. He was incarcerated on the drug violation with a warrant being applied for. Also arrested was a 19-year-old Salem man for minor in possession of intoxicants. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, August 10^th at 2:30 a.m. officers were detailed to 117 West Fourth Street to Vandivort Drug Store in reference to an individual attempting to break in the back door. The investigation, through the questioning of a witness, revealed a male subject had attempted to break in the building with damage being done to the rear door. A complete description of the subject was obtained. At 4:30 a.m. that same morning, officers were detailed to 903 Highway 19 South to Roc’s Sporting Goods reference to an attempted break-in. On officer’s arrival, a 25-year old Salem man was observed with his arm through a broken window in the building attempting to unlock a door to gain entry. He fled the scene on foot, was apprehended and taken into custody. The investigation of the incident revealed the subject taken into custody was the same subject who attempted to gain entry into Vandivort Drug Store. He was incarcerated on burglary, property damage and resisting arrest, pending the issuance of warrants.

The 81^st Dent County Fall Festival will be held at the “Commons” in Salem today through Saturday. The judging of exhibits will take place today from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm and the building will open 4:00 for public viewing. At 6:00 tonight, the bakery and pastry auction will be held in the Exhibit Building, and at 6:30 pm will be Church Night in the Stage Area. On Thursday, the Exhibit Building will open at 4:00 pm. Thursday will be wristband night at a cost of $14.00, and admission is $2.00 for ages 12 and up. At 6:00 pm that evening will be the Dent County Queen Contest. On Friday, the Hog Show starts at 9:00 am followed by the Sheep & Goat Show at 1:00, the Small Animals Show at 3:00, and the Dairy and Beef Cattle Show will be held at 4:00. Friday night at 7:30 will be the MO Garden Tractor and Mini-Rods at the Grandstand. Saturday is Kid’s Day at the 81^st Dent County Fall Festival. At 10:00 am there will be kids games and the Pedal Tractor Pull begins. “Fun for Kids” begins at 11:00 am. Wristbands will be $14.00 between the hours of 1:00 and 5:00. The 4-H/FFA Livestock Auction begins at 2:00 and the Demolition Derby will be held at 7:00 pm Saturday night at the Grandstand. The cost of admission is $6.00 for ages 12 and up. There will be food and beverage vendors and those selling their wares. Come out and enjoy the 81^st Dent County Fall Festival at the Commons in Salem, as there will be something for everyone. 

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

Residents who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 or at www.disasterassistance.gov from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week until further notice. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Graveside services for Jane Gibbs of Salem, age 53, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Edwin “Leon” Lunn of Salem, age 72, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Sybil Joyce Burnham of Salem, age 82, will be held today at 3:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Eugene “Gene” Hanks of Hill City, Kansas, formerly of Steelville, age 73, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic service at 7:00. Interment will be in the Callaway Memorial Gardens at 2:00 in Fulton.
