Salem R-80 School Superintendent Steve Carvajal has announced that due to the weather delaying certain aspects of construction, the start of school and open house have been pushed back. The start of school has been moved to Monday, August 18th. The Open House at the middle and high schools will now be held on Friday, August 15th from 5:30 to 7:30. The Open House at the lower elementary school will remain today from 5:30 to 6:30, and tonight at the upper elementary school from 6:30 to 7:30.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold a special meeting at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory meeting room, located at 1200 West Rolla Road, tonight at 7:00. The meeting will be held for the adoption process of the introduction of the proposed 2012 building code. This special meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 4:00 Saturday afternoon in Phelps County on Highway BB about half a mile east of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, 57-year old Linda Lindemann of White Bear Lake, Minnesota was driving a 2013 Hyundai Accent east when she slowed for a turn and was struck in the rear by a 1999 Ford Explorer, driven east by 17-year old Ashley Plank of Salem. An occupant in the Hyundai, 58-year old 58-year old Arthur Lindemann of White Bear Lake, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Both vehicles sustained minor damage and were driven from the scene.

Fishing is a great way for people to enjoy nature, especially children. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering a new program to help kids and families gain angling skills and confidence. MDC's Discover Nature - Fishing Program is free and teaches participants about fishing tackle, methods and where to go. These lessons will be held on Wednesday, August 13th from 1:00 to 8:00 pmat the Montauk State Park Hatchery Building. Lesson 1: Equipment, Casting and Proper Fish Handling combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn how to properly and safely cast a spincast fishing pole, parts of a fishing pole, how to fasten basic fishing tackle, and how to properly handle and release a fish. This lesson will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.. Lesson 2: Five Common Missouri Fish-Their Anatomy, Habitat, and Life Cycle combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic biological concepts and functions specific to largemouth bass, bluegill, hybrid sunfish, channel catfish and rainbow trout. Participants will learn the different components of fish anatomy and their functions. Participants will learn about various types of fish habitat and aquatic food webs. This lesson will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.. Lesson 4: Fishing with Lures and Fishing Regulations combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families how to properly select a fishing lure based on desired fish species, weather and water conditions. Participants will learn how to identify and understand fishing regulations. Lesson is 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Participants are limited to anglers ages 7 – 15 and families with children. Fishing equipment, instructors, and bait/lures will be provided and children must be supervised at all times. For reservation, please call (417) 256-7161.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Thursday, July 31st at 3:53 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 600 block of South Park in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a power washer and a push mower, valued at $200. On Friday, August 1st at 10:05 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of South Washington in reference to an intoxicated female, causing a disturbance, and damaging property. That investigation led to the arrest of a 37-year old female for disorderly conduct and disorderly house. She was issued two summonses to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Saturday, August 2nd at 8:53 in the evening, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1100 block of West Franklin in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem male on three active arrest warrants from Phelps County for resisting arrest, false impersonation, and failure to register as a sex offender. He was incarcerated pending extradition and application for warrants. On Sunday, August 3rd at 12:48 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 31-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that afternoon at 2:23, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft of merchandise. That investigation revealed that a security camera captured an image of a male taking a laptop computer, valued at $395, from the store without paying for it. He was identified as a 19 year-old Salem male and was arrested and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that night at 11:23, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of the driver, a 23-year old Salem female, for possession of marijuana. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Salem Football Tigers will be participating in a scrimmage on Blue/White night tonight at 6:00 pm. Come on out to the Salem High School Football Stadium and support your 2014 Salem Tigers. Admission to the game will be a Gatorade and water. At 5:30 before the scrimmage, Coach Mac will be having a parent meeting with all parents of 9th to 12th grade players. The 12th Tiger Booster Club will be meeting at that time as well.

Kolten Wong went 4-for-5 with two runs scored to help the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The Cardinals will be in Miami tonight to start a three-game series with the Marlins. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 5:35.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jason Motte has been placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a lower back sprain. The move is retroactive to August 2nd. The Cardinals recalled pitcher Nick Greenwood to the fill the roster spot.

Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez both hit two-run homers and the Kansas City Royals defeated the San Francisco Giants, 7-4, in the finale of a three-game set on Sunday. Nori Aoki reached in all four of his at-bats, finishing with two hits, two runs, two walks and three stolen bases for the Royals, who will host the Oakland Athletics tonight at Kauffman Stadium.

Ryan Griffin threw for 179 yards and a touchdown as the New Orleans Saints opened the preseason with a 26-24 win over the St. Louis Rams on Friday. Veteran signal caller Shaun Hill threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Rams, while Austin Davis picked up 134 yards and a score on 10-for-16 passing.

Funeral services for Sybilla Jane (Stagner) Buford, age 100, will be held today at noon at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Memorial Long Term Care.

Funeral services for Eileen Hughes of St. James, age 62, will be today at 1:00 at the St. James Chapel of James & Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will at the chapel from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Virginia May Dobbs of Salem, age 85, will be held at 11:00 Wednesday morning at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Salem or Three Rivers Hospice in Licking.
