New Missouri DWI legislation will crack down on drunk drivers and make Missouri roads safer. The timely coordination of the new law and an impaired driving campaign will urge drivers to think about the consequences of impaired driving this August and in the months ahead. This year’s You Drink & Drive, You Lose campaign will take place August 20th through September 6th. Law enforcement will participate in statewide sobriety checkpoints and DWI saturation patrols enforcing Missouri’s DWI laws and keeping impaired drivers off the road. At the same time, advertising messages will remind drivers of the consequences of impaired driving. One hundred and ninety-five law enforcement agencies participated in the 2009 “You Drink & Drive, You Lose.” campaign and issued 909 DWI violations. The new DWI law which goes into effect August 28th will increase jail time for repeat DWI offenders and those with higher blood alcohol levels; move more cases from municipal courts to state courts, where penalties can be tougher; mandate better record-keeping for DWI cases so that repeat offenders can be properly tracked; and offer offenders opportunities to participate in a DWI court program that incorporates treatment and close monitoring instead of going to jail. In 2009, 280 people were killed, 1,140 seriously injured and 3,719 received minor injuries in crashes involving an impaired driver. Now more than ever-in Missouri, You Drink and Drive, You Lose. Matt Holliday had four hits, scored a run and drove in three as the Cardinals knocked off Cincinnati, 8-4, in a game marred by a brawl between the two NL Central rivals in the opening inning. Yadier Molina homered and drove in a pair of runs while Albert Pujols walked twice, scored twice and knocked in a run for the Cardinals, who have won the first two games of the three-game set to draw even with the Reds for the top spot in the standings. Jaime Garcia (10-5) picked up the win after yielding four runs on a pair of hits and five walks over 5 1/3 innings for the Redbirds, who got 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief from the bullpen to sew up their fourth win in five games. Ryan Franklin was called on to get the final out and earned his 20th save. The Cardinals go for the sweep and lead in the division this morning at 11:15 on KSMO.

The Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals were involved in a benches-clearing incident before the bottom of the first inning got underway in Tuesday's game at Great American Ball Park. Brandon Phillips, who said some inflammatory things about the Cardinals after Monday night's game, was set to lead off and immediately became involved in a heated argument with Yadier Molina. The catcher took his mask off and seemed to spark the verbal battle that quickly emptied both benches and bullpens. Managers Tony La Russa and Dusty Baker were arguing with one another before pitcher Chris Carpenter of the Cardinals and third baseman Scott Rolen of the Reds became entangled as the mass of players then quickly moved from home plate to the wall and screen behind the plate area. Cincinnati starting pitcher Johnny Cueto wound up getting pinned against the screen but was able to re-take the mound in the second inning and wound up lasting 5 1/3 innings and suffering the loss. La Russa and Baker were both ejected but no players were thrown out of the game.

Dan Haren threw seven innings to record his first win since becoming an Angel, as Los Angeles edged Kansas City, 3-1, in the middle contest of a three-game series. Bryan Bullington (0-2) permitted five hits and three runs over six innings for the Royals, who lost for the fifth time in six games. Alex Gordon drove in the only Royals' run. The Royals and Angels play this afternoon as the Angels go for the sweep.
