The 82^nd Annual Dent County Fall Festival starts today with carnival rides opening at 4:00 and it is Wristband Night where you can ride all the rides for $14.00. The Opening Ceremony will take place at the Livestock Barn at 5:00, followed by the Opening Address by Rick Mannis. Then at 5:30 it will be the Opening Church Service with Mickie Davis and Scott Schultz, followed by Christian Rock Bands at 6:00 pm. The Miss Dent County and Jr. Miss Dent County Pageants will take place at the Stage area beginning at 6:00; and the Pie and Pastry auction will be held in the Youth Building at 7:00 pm. There will be no gate fee today and tonight. The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of July. During the month, they wrote 22 traffic tickets, 27 warning tickets and three equipment repair orders. They also served 29 summons to appear in court and four fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated 14 accidents, four assaults, two domestic assaults, one report of a missing or runaway juvenile, two reports of sexual abuse, one report of sexual misconduct, and seven reports of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated 17 reports of stealing, eight reports of property damage, one report of tampering, one burglary, two reports of disorderly conduct, one report of counterfeiting, one report of an ex parte violation, three reports of forgery, one report of harassment, one report of a lost/stolen plates, and one report of leaving the scene of an accident. They also investigated two reports of possession of marijuana, one report of possession of synthetic drugs and one report of distribution of a controlled substance. The police department also conducted two death investigations during the month. The police received 2,068 calls for service during the month and handled 163 walk-ins to the station and redirected 68 calls to the animal control officer. They also spent six hours in court testifying and six hours as court bailiff. The calls in July included seven calls for escorts, one 9-1-1 calls, three intoxicated driver investigation calls, three calls for a suspicious person or vehicle, six calls for peace disturbances, 12 ambulance assist calls, 12 calls for alarms sounding, eight calls for fights in progress, seven domestic dispute calls, two calls for an intoxicated pedestrian, one call for drag racing/speeding vehicles and four wreckers were needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 7,379 miles during the month of July. The Salem Police Department arrested 22 males and 13 females during the month of July.

New Missouri DWI legislation will crack down on drunk drivers and make Missouri roads safer. The timely coordination of the new law and an impaired driving campaign will urge drivers to think about the consequences of impaired driving this August and in the months ahead. This year’s You Drink & Drive, You Lose campaign will take place August 20^th through September 6^th. Law enforcement will participate in statewide sobriety checkpoints and DWI saturation patrols enforcing Missouri’s DWI laws and keeping impaired drivers off the road. At the same time, advertising messages will remind drivers of the consequences of impaired driving. One hundred and ninety-five law enforcement agencies participated in the 2009 “You Drink & Drive, You Lose.” campaign and issued 909 DWI violations. The new DWI law which goes into effect August 28^th will increase jail time for repeat DWI offenders and those with higher blood alcohol levels; move more cases from municipal courts to state courts, where penalties can be tougher; mandate better record-keeping for DWI cases so that repeat offenders can be properly tracked; and offer offenders opportunities to participate in a DWI court program that incorporates treatment and close monitoring instead of going to jail. In 2009, 280 people were killed, 1,140 seriously injured and 3,719 received minor injuries in crashes involving an impaired driver. Now more than ever-in Missouri, You Drink and Drive, You Lose.
